When Philip Schwartzerd changed his German name to Melanchthon, this act might have been considered symbolic of the linguistic interest which was to be dominant throughout his life: Greek. As a student of Greek he proved to be the ready helper who enlisted much technical knowledge of the language in the service of Luther's translation of the New Testament. They were first called Nazarenes or Galileans. The name Christians, or Messiah believers, was first applied to them at Antioch (Acts 11, 19), and, it seems, in scorn. The Messiah in whom the Jews hoped was something entirely different. Their conception of Him was connected with the Temple tax, which was annually sent to Jerusalem from all the provinces of the Roman Empire.

When the worship of God in the Old Testament in the form of so-called public services was first instituted, it had a very simple form. We are told that in the time of Enos men began to call upon the name of the Lord, that is, to proclaim the name of the Lord Jehovah, Gen. 4, 26. This preaching or teaching was clearly a sacramental act, just as the bringing of sacrifices, as in the case of Abel, was a sacrificial act, very likely attended by prayer.

Luther does not offer a clear-cut theoretical definition of conscience, but he speaks very perspicuously on the functions of conscience, and we shall take occasion to quote him repeatedly. Hauff, in his Real- konkordanz, calls conscience "das deutliche Bewusstsein von der sittlichen Guete unserer Gcsinnungen und Handlungcn, den inneren Richter, den jeder im Busen traegt" Standard Dictionary: "Conscience is the activity or faculty by which distinctions are made between the right and wrong in conduct and character." The Schaff- Herzog Encyclopedia defines conscience as "the moral sense of the individual applied to his own conduct."

What is the orign1 of the so-called Gregorian Chant? That is the question asked by Dickinson in his splendid monograph on music in the Western Church. He himself interestingly expounds his question: "There is hardly a more interesting question in the whole history of music; for this chant is the basis of the whole magnificent structure of medieval church song and, in a certain sense of all modern music, and it can be traced back unbroken to the earliest years of the Christian Church. the most persistent and fruitful form of art that the modem world has known."
