None of these translations expresses adequately the basic meaning of the Greek terms. Repentance, like the Latin poenitentia, has a strong connotation of sorrow, German Reue. And the German word Busse carries with it the idea of making amends by paying or suffering a penalty. Sich bessern is an inevitable result of μετανοεῑν, but this idea is not contained in the original concept of the verb.

A second catch phrase of the unionistic propaganda is "Unity In diversity," "Diversity within unity," "Einigkeit in Mannigfaltigkeit." It expresses the idea that the existence of the various denominations within the external church denominationalism is a blessing; the doctrinal differences do not divide the churches, but form one harmonious body of doctrine; and by practicing fellowship, pulpit fellowship, intercommunion, co-operation - interdenominationalism - the churches utilize the blessings connected with denominationalism.

So wrote the late Franz Xaver Kiefl, Dean of the Cathedral of Regensburg and before that professor of dogmatics in Wuerzburg, in Hochland of October, 1917. His article is "Martin Luther's Religious Psyche the Root of a Modem World Picture," reprinted in 1922 as "Catholic World-View and Modern Thought."

That is Luther's fundamental truth of the whole system.

In the doctrine of atonement Zwingli merely repeated the traditional language of the Church. Zwingli tells us that, long before he even heard of Luther, he learned from Thomas Wyttenbach, one of his teachers at Basel, that "the death of Christ is the sole price of the remission of sins" III:544). This was nothing unusual, for such statements can be found in many Catholic writers before Luther.

Huldreich Zwingli (born January 1, 1484, died October 11, 1531) has often been called the forerunner of Calvin; but as Ritschl, Dogmengeschichte des Protestantismus, III:27, point. out, Zwingli is the "real author of the Reformed confession and, together with Bucer, the founder of Reformed theology." It was Bucer who formed the connecting link between Zwingli and Calvin.

From a small number at the time of William the Conqueror the monasteries had grown to about 1,200 at the Reformation, when they owned from one half to two thirds of the land.

As early as 1410 Parliament demanded their ending; Henry V suppressed over a hundred of them. Popes permitted bishops to suppress some and with the proceeds to build colleges. Henry VII used the monasteries of Mottisford and Luffield to build the chantry and hospital of Windsor.

The formula of Baptism is definitely fixed. Christ, who instituted Baptism, tells us that we should baptize "εις τὸ ο͂νομα τοῡ πατὁζ χαι το̄υ νιο̄υ χαι το̄u άψιου πνεύmatoζ,” Matt. 28:19, thereby distinguishing His Baptism from all others that in His days were to be found among both Jews and Gentiles. We have neither reason nor authority to change the wording of this formula. For further Information on this point we refer to Walther, Pastorale, pp.110-118, and to Pieper, Christliche Dogmatik, Vol. III, pp. 302 to 308.

On the Fourth Sunday in Advent, December 24, 1525, Hugh Latimer preached in the Augustinian chapel, and so Prior Barnes preached in St. Edward's Church and used Luther's sermon on Philippians 4:4.
