This festival is known also as the Theophany, the Manifestation of God; the Feast of the Three Kings; and Twelfth - or in Lutheran Sweden, as Thirteenth - Day. A large· section of the church still observes it as the Christmas Festival. In a degree it must be associated with Christmas, but there is a distinct advance in its teaching. The Babe of Bethlehem is revealed as God, the splendor of the divine glory bursting through the humanity. The feast is the complete fulfillment of Advent, the highest point of the Christmas cycle.

Christmas, that is the Mass of Christ's Day, is the only feast of the year for which our rite appoints two services and provides two sets of Propers. The set of Propers for the Early Service has been spoken of as historic, the set for the later Service as dogmatic. Whether we find it convenient or not, the fact remains that both sets are appointed for The Communion. The great festivals of the church year are provided with a period of days that precedes and follows them as a season of preparation for and application of the central teaching. The Feast of the Nativity is preceded by the Advent season and followed by the twelve days culminating in the Festival of the Epiphany and the Epiphany season. The season of Advent precedes the Nativity of our Lord to prepare not for God's birth as a true man but for the commemoration of this historic event.

Neither transportation for little Lutheran moppets to their parish school, nor the supplying of free textbooks to Roman Catholic elementary school children, nor the teaching in public schools by nuns garbed in the distinctive dress of their order, is really basic among the current issues in church-state relations. They may be, or they may become, vital because of basic principles involved and because of the wider ramifications of the single problem. The fundamental issues need clarification before particular problems are discussed.

Nietzsche began as an admirer of Luther and the German Reformation. The age of Luther ranked as high in his early opinion as the age of Goethe and Beethoven. From Menschliches, Allzumenschliches on, this favorable attitude toward Luther underwent a strong transformation. In the five years from 1878 to 1883, Nietzsche’s second creative period, Luther emerged as a highly questionable figure, even as a most regrettable event in the history of German and European thought and civilization. But all these severe pronouncements on Luther were only a prelude to the scathing denunciations to come in Nietzsche's post-Zarathustra writings.

One must grow up with this psalm to get into the mood of the psalmist and to learn to pray with him. How vividly we remember the first time we read this psalm alone as a child that had just learned to read! What terror it struck into the heart! For a long time this psalm was avoided. Later, much later, when this psalm was encountered again, the terror had all gone. Trust, security, and assurance had taken its place. In the family circle it became known as the "birthday psalm" and is the prayer for that day.
