Holy Cross Comes To Cleveland: A Partnership In Catholic Secondary Education, James Gutowski Jan 2022

Holy Cross Comes To Cleveland: A Partnership In Catholic Secondary Education, James Gutowski

2022 Faculty Bibliography

In 1943 Bishop Edward F. Hoban came to Cleveland, Ohio, as coadjutor bishop to Archbishop Joseph Schrembs. Having risen to the episcopacy under the tutelage of Archbishop George Mundelein of Chicago, Hoban shared his mentor’s propensity for expanding and streamlining the work of his diocese, including education. Hoban’s efforts to expand Catholic high school education in Cleveland began at the same time that the Brothers of Holy Cross, led by Brother Ephrem O’Dwyer, C.S.C., sought to become an independent province within their congregation. Over the next twenty years, this confluence of institutional needs induced brother and bishop to develop a …

A Relational Account Of Structure And Agency Via ‘Lived Ancient Religion’ And The ‘Processing Approach’, With A Case Study Of Circumcision In Ancient Judaism*, Thomas R. Blanton Iv

Addressing studies of the concepts of structure and agency, in 2008 sociologist François Dépelteau called for a ‘relational approach’ that compared the ‘trans-actions’ of actors, but notably left open the question of how such a study should be conducted. The present article attempts to operationalise Dépelteau’s call, albeit in a manner tailored specifically to meet the needs of researchers in the area of ‘lived ancient religion’. The study of ‘trans-action’ is operationalised here by employing key terms drawn from Staf Hellemans’s ‘processing approach’ to the study of religion, in which agents ‘process’ their environments through selection, modification, assembly, performance, integration, …

Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey Jan 2022

Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey

2022 Faculty Bibliography

Reporting on responses from a survey of disaffected Mormons who utilize internet resources to manage feelings of distance from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this article explores the production of religious ambivalence online, arguing that ambivalence is not a default position for those too passive or afraid to leave, nor is it a failure of decisiveness or commitment. Rather, it is a produced religious mode that depends on robust socialization mechanisms to result in a strong sense of personal and collective identity. The online context enables, and indeed requires, an operationalization of religious ambivalence as both a …

Care Ethics And Paternalism: A Beauvoirian Approach, Deniz Durmus Jan 2022

Care Ethics And Paternalism: A Beauvoirian Approach, Deniz Durmus

2022 Faculty Bibliography

Feminist care ethics has become a prominent ethical theory that influenced theoretical and practical discussions in a variety of disciplines and institutions on a global scale. However, it has been criticized by transnational feminist scholars for operating with Western-centric assumptions and registers, especially by universalizing care as it is practiced in the Global North. It has also been criticized for prioritizing gender over other categories of intersectionality and hence for not being truly intersectional. Given the imperialist and colonial legacies embedded into the unequal distribution of care work across the globe, a Western-centric approach may also carry the danger of …
