Alan Lupack, Arthurian Literature By Women, Alison Langdon
Alan Lupack, Arthurian Literature By Women, Alison Langdon
English Faculty Publications
This is a timely volume, given the surge in scholarly and popular interest in women's voices in the Arthurian tradition. The explicit purpose of this anthology is to explore the "rich and forgotten tradition" of women writers' contributions to the corpus of Arthurian literature, sketching a female lineage of literary descent that traces "certain traditions common to women writing on Arthurian themes" (xi, 4). While the foreword provides an overview of more familiar women authors such as Rosemary Sutcliffe, Mary Stewart, and Persia Wooley, in their selections of works to anthologize Lupack and Lupack choose to focus on lesser-known texts …

The Text Of The "Restored" Edition Of All The King's Men, Noel Polk
The Text Of The "Restored" Edition Of All The King's Men, Noel Polk
Robert Penn Warren Studies
All the King's Men appeared in 1946 in a text that had been changed in hundreds of ways by Harcourt editors; cumulatively these editorial interventions changed the novel in serious ways, mostly in changing the character of the narrator, Jack Burden, and his relationship to the events he narrates. The "restored" edition, published in 2001, indeed restores Warren's original text wherever it was possible, and so makes available a text much closer to what Warren had written initially. This essay offers a general explanation of the differences between the two versions of All the King's Men, a detailed listing of …
Le Silence Du Bonheur And The House Of Forgiveness: Space And Silence In Flood, Aimee Berger
Le Silence Du Bonheur And The House Of Forgiveness: Space And Silence In Flood, Aimee Berger
Robert Penn Warren Studies
Katrin Meise reformulates Wittgenstein's famous dictum-"What we cannot speak about, we must pass over in silence"-in a way that is particularly germane to a reading of Warren's novel Flood: ''What we pass over in silence, we must speak about." Warren establishes a complex aesthetic that incorporates silence into the circuit of discourse, forcing characters to confront the limitations of language, even as they realize the redemptive power of telling a "true" story.
Philosophers, Fools, And Kings: Notes On The Brothers Karamazov And All The King's Men, C. Jason Smith
Philosophers, Fools, And Kings: Notes On The Brothers Karamazov And All The King's Men, C. Jason Smith
Robert Penn Warren Studies
A comparative analysis of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Brother's Karamazov (1879-80) and Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men (1946) based on the analysis of archetypal characters found in the work of both authors. The Philosophers, whose world-view is based in post-enlightenment reason, operate in a dialectical relationship with the Fools who interact with the world through faith. Culturally, the resolution of the dialectic between reason and faith yields the synthesis of the King who embodies reason and faith, the temporal and the eternal, in his position of god-given power. However, both Dostoyevsky and Warren actively reject the social imperative towards …

Saint Boniface And The Conversion Of Germany During The Early Eight Century, Joel S. Thomas
Saint Boniface And The Conversion Of Germany During The Early Eight Century, Joel S. Thomas
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The overall theme of this project is Carolingian missionary activity during the first half of the eighth century, focusing specifically on the work of Saint Boniface of Crediton. My objectives were to establish that Saint Boniface borrowed conversion methodology from Pope Gregory I, define Teutonic and Celtic paganism, and illustrate how the rise of the Carolingian family aided Christian missionary efforts.
Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller
Dante's Thomistic Vision: The Commedia, Frank Muller
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Dante's Commedia derives its form and content from the philosophy of St.Thomas Aquinas. It is a philosophical poemthat allegorically examines medieval moral theory, articulated in Aquinas' Summa Theologiae, in order to morally instruct the medieval layperson. This paper focuses mostly around the capital sin of pride due to its important place throughout the work and its efficacy in illustrating the link between Aquinas and Alighieri. The discussion of the sin involves providing Thomas' definition of pride and its opposite virtue, humility, in comparison with Dante's artistic representations. The overall goal is to present Dante's Commedia as an intricately philosophical work …

Moving Beyond The Written Comment: Narrowing The Gap Between Response Practice And Research, Jane Fife, Peggy O'Neill
Moving Beyond The Written Comment: Narrowing The Gap Between Response Practice And Research, Jane Fife, Peggy O'Neill
English Faculty Publications
While our field’s response practices have changed dramatically over the past two decades to involve more student comments on their own texts, empirical studies have lagged far behind classroom practices, focusing almost exclusively on teachers’ written comments as texts. By broadening our notion of response—and acknowledging the many and varied ways that teachers respond to student writing as well as the many and varied ways that students influence and interpret those responses—we will be able to narrow the gap between our teaching practices and our research questions.

“The Muhlenberg County [Kentucky] Heritage” was published four times a year by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society in Greenville, Kentucky, from 1978 to 2001. The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. A separate annual index was printed each year for volumes 1-14. Afterwards, each issue was indexed separately. Generally, the index is to surnames only.
