Since the 1960s, the movement known as "Engaged Buddhism" has grown on a global scale. From protesting human rights violations to spending meditation retreats as homeless persons on the streets ofNew York, Engaged Buddhists react to modem problems by using a Buddhist framework. The Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism movement is a specific example of Engaged Buddhism. In the United States, Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists respond to problems such as nuclear waste and species extinction by reinterpreting traditional Buddhist doctrines and applying them to an ecological setting. Thai Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists, on the other hand, apply those doctrines to Buddhist rituals in response …

Train Up A Child In The Way He Should Go: The Jehovah's Witness' Supreme Court Cases Of The Early 1940s, Kimberly A. Tharpe

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The cases brought by the Jehovah's Witnesses in the early 1940s prompted the Supreme Court to confront the situations that occurred when children's interests came into conflict with parental rights over religious issues. With Minersville v. Gobitis in 1940, the Court held that the expulsion of Witness children from public schools did not constitute a violation of the religious rights of parents even though the objection was religiously based. The Court overturned this decision three years later with West Virginia v. Barnette, ruling that such expulsions did, in fact, violate the religious rights of the parents involved. It was in …

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 140. Collection includes report cards, diplomas, autograph albums and scrapbooks of sisters Ilyne and Lila Dean Hall, Sebree, (Webster County) Kentucky. The sisters, with friend Vera Mae Rideout, drowned in Green River near Eastwood Ferry on August 29, 1929. The collection also includes sympathy letters, memorial cards, photos and a eulogy.

George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter As Slavery Opponent?, Louis Bellamy

The present work investigates the often cited, but poorly supported, notion that Founding Father George Mason was a wealthy, slave-owning Virginian who vehemently opposed slavery. Utilizing Mason's state papers, letters, and other documents, as well as contemporaries' accounts of his speeches, this work will analyze those records' contextual construction, and it will deconstruct both Mason's written and spoken words and his actions and inactions relative to slavery. The goal of this effort is to determine whether Mason, who ostensibly played such an instrumental role in the development of the "rights" of Americans, and who remained a slaveholder—thereby trampling the rights …
