She expresses hope that Gilbert may return home soon, but refers to talk of President Woodrow Wilson’s refusal to accept a negotiated peace. Letter, 21 January 1862, written to his wife in Granville, Ohio, by Dr. Edwin Sinnet while serving as a surgeon with the 94th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. From Mill Springs Kentucky, he writes of the fate of the Confederate forces after the recent battle: their ill-advised attack from their winter quarters; their flight and abandonment of arms, equipment and horses; their burning of flatboats used to cross the Cumberland River; and the “bloody corpses” scattered across fields and roads. He tells of encountering a survivor still lying wounded on the battlefield.

Letter, 3 February 1856, of Andy Robinson, Jr. to his brother and fellow steamboat captain Claudius Robinson, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Writing from Smithland, Kentucky, he advises of a delay in departing with the steamer “Lucie May” due to ice on the Ohio River. He also refers to his concern that “James” (possibly another brother) was involved in a railroad accident, but acknowledges hearing from Claudius that he is safe.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 699. Rickie Z. Ashby, a native of Ohio County, amassed this material as he worked on various historical and genealogical research projects. The chief focus of the collection is the vigilante group known as the Possum Hunters, which operated in the first quarter of the twentieth century in various western Kentucky counties, chiefly Butler, Muhlenberg, Ohio, and Daviess counties. Secondary emphasis is on other vigilante groups in southcentral Kentucky, including the Night Riders.

Student folk studies project titled: “Hazel Daniel’s Songbook,” which includes an alphabetical list of the songs in the collection including “found” and “unfound” songs, along with a bibliography and the lyrics to the “found” songs. Survey sheets may include the title of the song, lyrics and source. Daniel of Hartford, Kentucky and her nephew Larry Daniel collected songs from 1938 until 1948. Manual titled “Folk Speech Section of WKUAFF,” created to provide organization and conventions for the collection of student folk projects created by folk studies students for the WKU Archives of Folklore and Folklife or the Folklife Archives. The manual includes survey sheets with responses from a brief questionnaire about vocabulary, dialect, and linguistics across Kentucky. This collection also includes questionnaires from other student projects used to gather vocabulary about a particular subject, i.e. mules, quilting, folk songs, remedies, etc.

Letters to Captain Lee Owsley Haskins, written by his family in Bowling Green, Kentucky during his World War I military service. His father describes his business activities, discusses his son’s plans after the war, and reports in November 1918 of the ebbing of the influenza epidemic and the Board of Health’s plan to “lift the Ban.” His mother refers to his recent surgery, and his sister writes of the arrival of a troop train in Bowling Green and the soldiers’ march downtown for canteen service.

The Memorialist is a work of creative nonfiction. In this long-form essay, the author digests the memories and secondhand stories unearthed while exploring the junked, rusted, and wrecked life of an eccentric uncle who was preceded in death by his sister, the author’s mother. Through its associative and slippery structure, it follows the author as she untangles two histories halted—connected, contrasting lives disrupted by death. Meditative and metaphorical, the narrative explores both the beauty and burden of death through the eulogy form in a quest to determine how to memorialize a life defined by what death leaves behind.

Yone Noguchi’s novels, The American Diary of a Japanese Girl and The American Letters of a Japanese Parlor-Maid, both published with the first decade of the twentieth century, have been the subject of study for scholars in the humanities for the past few decades. The research examines both novels in historical context and against his personal communications and his subsequently published works, understanding Noguchi not just as a Japanese immigrant but also a member of an American literary community. I compare the larger structing of the Diary to the works of his literary peers and mentors and demonstrate that understanding …
