He complains about a cancelled furlough and comments on mutual friends and Army life. Letter is on illustrated stationery that depicts scenes at Fort Knox. The envelope features an American flag with troops standing at attention.

Brief entries discuss troop movements and skirmishes in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and especially southcentral Kentucky. He makes more in-depth comments about a skirmish at Woodsonville, Hart County, Kentucky on 17 December 1861.
