The purpose of this study is to provide new evidence for the existence of the 2 sg present active imperative *mimihí ‘measure’ in the Rigveda. Controlling to an extent for the effects of morphosyntax, I show that the poets do not localize the forms transmitted as mimihí in the meter similarly to the way that they localize forms of the same metrical/phonological shape, e.g. did¯ıhí ‘shine’, ´si´s¯ıhí ‘sharpen’, gr.n. ¯ıhí ‘sing’. Instead, they localize them like forms of the shape *mimihí , e.g. kr.n. uhí ‘make’, ´sr.n.uhí ‘hear’, tanuhi ‘stretch’. Thus we should restore *mimihí . I then …

Listening is widely regarded as an important skill that is difficult and necessary to teach in L2 classrooms. Listening requires both top-down and bottom-up processing, yet pedagogical techniques for the latter are often lacking. This study explores the efficacy of pronunciation instruction (PI) for improving learners’ bottom-up processing. The study recruited 116 relatively novice learners of Spanish as a foreign language and provided the experimental groups with brief lessons in PI emphasizing segmental or suprasegmental features followed by production-focused or perception-focused practice. It has become customary for reviews of handbooks to express misgivings toward the genre and its ever-increasing presence. But whatever one might think of companion volumes, this is a useful book. It boasts a wide range of generally high-quality essays by a parade of eminent scholars. Perhaps its most praiseworthy feature is the clarity and accessibility of many of its contributions, which makes them ideal starting points for the non-specialist. We will no doubt be assigning several of these chapters in our classes.

For over a century, the development of English, especially its two waves of foreign influence during the period between late OE to ME, has been a controversial area. This paper attempts to examine the two instances of foreign influence exerted upon English using several important notions taken from pidgin-creole and bilingual theories to provide more realistic pictures of the two language contact situations. Le but de la présente étude est d'examiner la nature du problème de l'origine des langues, tel qu'il se présentait au dix-huitième siècle. Une attention particulière est accordée, d'une part, à la Grammaire générale et raisonnée de Port-Royal, et de l'autre aux théories empiriques, ceci enfin de distinguer les facteurs qui contribuèrent à l'élaboration d'une nouvelle philosophie linguistique.
