The Population Of Richmond, Virginia During The Civil War Era, John G. Deal
The Population Of Richmond, Virginia During The Civil War Era, John G. Deal
Master's Theses
This thesis studies the population of Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War era by examining the persistence (those who remained in the city for ten years) of a sample of white, male heads of household from 1860. It focuses on such characteristics as age, nativity, wealth, and occupation. In contrast to other investigations of persistence, individuals who left the city, but remained in the state, also are examined. Further, a sample from Richmond's population in 1850 is traced during that decade to compare persistence rates and characteristics to the 1860 sample. The low persistence rates in both the 1850s and …
From Jazz To Swing: African-American Jazz Musicians And Their Music, 1890-1935 By Thomas Hennessey (Book Review), Gene H. Anderson
From Jazz To Swing: African-American Jazz Musicians And Their Music, 1890-1935 By Thomas Hennessey (Book Review), Gene H. Anderson
Music Faculty Publications
According to Hennessey, the purpose of the present text, an extension of his dissertation, "From Jazz Age to Swing: Black Musicians and Their Music, 1917-1935" (Ph.D. diss., Northwestern University, 1973), is to trace the interaction between the enormous sociological changes in America and the music of African American musicians from the origin of jazz to the beginning of the swing era. He claims that "the transformation of jazz from a primarily local music rooted in black folk traditions to the tightly managed product of a national industry controlled by white businessmen and aimed at a predominantly white mass market paralleled …
Verdi's First "Willow Song": New Sketches And Drafts For Otello, Linda B. Fairtile
Verdi's First "Willow Song": New Sketches And Drafts For Otello, Linda B. Fairtile
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
The genesis of Verdi's Otello is a familiar episode in the history of Italian opera. The semiretired composer's reluctance to reenter the operatic fray, his gradual interest in Arrigo Boito's draft libretto, and the astonishing speed with which he composed the music have been the subject of both musicological and biographical study. Letters between librettist and composer detail the textual modifications that Boito made to accommodate Verdi's needs. Up until now, however, we have had few corresponding musical documents readily available to illustrate how Verdi grappled with the challenges of Boito's libretto. Beginning with his draft text, dispatched to Verdi …

Grieving And Reconciliation In Baltimore After The American Civil War, Jennifer Prior
Grieving And Reconciliation In Baltimore After The American Civil War, Jennifer Prior
Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how residents of Baltimore, Maryland, grieved their losses after the Civil War. Thantalogical studies of the stages of grief were compared with various public events and institutions throughout the city's culture. Special focus was placed upon Baltimore's internal split during the war as portions of its population opted to fight on opposing sides. This study reveals not only how the city progressed through its bereavement, but also how it found selected outlets of expression to manage emotional pain.

Philanthropy As A Virtue In Late Antiquity And The Middle Ages, G. Scott Davis
Philanthropy As A Virtue In Late Antiquity And The Middle Ages, G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
"Philanthropy," "charity," and related concepts were well known to late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Rulers, wealthy individuals and, early on, the Christian church founded hospitals, distributed food, and established forms of relief for the needy of various sorts throughout the period. The problem comes in interpreting these activities, their motives, and their goals. Is the philanthropia of a pre-Christian philosopher of a piece with the agape, or Christian love, of a fourth-century bishop? When the Roman emperor provides bread and circuses, what does he intend and why does he do it? Does the twelfth-century nobleman intend the same? As …
