Attempts to fuse fantasy and science fiction art work tend to be unidirectional. The artists begin with things that don’t make sense and then force them to make sense to the audience. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. In some images, dinosaurs are given mechanically sound contraptions; dragons are given tendons, and basilisks are drawn with surprising accuracy. It applies science to the fictional to create an image that is plausible. However, my experience with developmental biology and paleontology suggests that it is equally possible to take it in the other direction and begin with things that …

Popular conceptions about those receiving welfare benefits have long been less than flattering, while those of farmers have been the opposite. Even though both were receiving federal aid in the 1980s, welfare recipients were usually portrayed as black women and farmers as white men. The former was a group perceived to be lazy, undeserving, and tearing at the fabric of American society; the latter was viewed as noble, hard-working, and a source of moral fiber for the nation. Welfare recipients in the Reagan Era received “money for nothing” but so too did farmers. Yet farmers were still largely portrayed in …

In 1959, leaders of the Minnesota Valley Council, BSA (headquartered in Mankato, MN) began making plans to create a new Boy Scout camp to replace their recently built camp in Southern Minnesota. The previous fifteen years of the post-World War II era had produced significant shifts in ideas about wilderness, what constituted quality outdoor recreation, growing anxiety about masculinity in the Cold War era, and expansion of the promotion and adoption of a North Woods tourist culture. Inspired by the author’s memories, KeyBoard Memories and You have the Right to Forget are two short stage plays exploring topics of identity, time, and justice. This thesis uses personal and creative memories to develop stories in the form of scripts. The thesis begins with an example of creative writing inspired by the author’s personal and creative memories and describes the purpose of the project before moving into a review of literature that explains what memories are, how they work, and the different types of memories. The January 6 Capitol insurrection was heavily documented with recorded videos and photos, across legacy and social media. Despite engaging in criminal acts, many participants recorded themselves participating in the attack and posted their videos to Parler, a right-wing alternative to Facebook and Twitter that gained traction among the far-right, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and white supremacy groups. These social media videos detail an interesting rhetorical dynamic at play, one that is not so recognizable in legacy media: performances of sex/gender. Webcomics have now existed as a form of graphic literature for slightly over thirty years, evolving along with computer technology and in turn reflecting the changes in culture, style and preferences for both independent artists on the Internet and their audiences. The evolution of the webcomic illustrates how the changing trends in technology and profit interests shape stylistic and narrative sensibilities. The recital consisted of Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor Op. 13 “Pathétique” by Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonatine pour Piano by Maurice Ravel, Liebesleid by Fritz Kreisler, arranged for solo piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Étude No. 12 in D-sharp minor, Op. 8, by Alexander Scriabin, and Ballade No. 4 in F minor Op. 52 by Frédéric Chopin.

Although the Troubles often have been written about by historians through a nationalistic or cultural context, pitting the Irish Catholic Nationalists against the Protestant British loyalists, much of the action took place within the political sphere, as the Nationalists’ and Unionists’ representatives fought for concessions and control. Rather than focusing on the religious differences or the ethnographic backgrounds of the people living in Northern Ireland, this thesis examines through a political context how the leaders of Sinn Féin shaped popular opinion and gained support through nonviolent means.
