Becoming a person of character is an individual responsibility, yet society uses institutions and media to help guide future generations to obtain virtues and moral values. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pillars of character depicted in children's literature published in the United States from 1950-1999 reflect the renewal in character education programs for schoolchildren.

A content analysis was used to analyze twenty-five best-selling children's picture books from 1950-1999 that were randomly selected to be in the sample population. In 1753, Christian Gottfried Krause published a lied collection entitled Oden mit Melodien that laid the groundwork for a new setting of words for voice and piano. Nineteenth-century German lieder dominated influential song output and centralized the art form in Western Europe. Twentieth-century art song brings an expansion of influence beyond the German lieder tradition. Children's picture books portraying Mexican Americans can provide Mexican American children a means of connecting with their culture. I will examine McNally's 1991 play "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" and explore his theatrical representations of the male body onstage, primarily from the point of view of the heterosexual male characters, John and Sam, and their homosocial relationship with each other, and how they relate to the invisible presence of the gay men around them. While "Love! Valour! Compassion!" displays frontal nudity, "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" uses what I will call "narrative nudity," verbally conjuring up the physicality of the male body through images designed by McNally's vivid and colorful language and dialogue. The intent of this study is to show how the principle of teaching in role through Theatre for Youth, Participation Theatre and Creative Drama were used by Dino Hayz to teach young people about exhibits at the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science in Davenport, Iowa from 1990 to 2001. When it began, the Heritage Theatre at the Putnum Museum offered short plays or monologues performed in and relating to the museum exhibits. The Portrayal Of Stepfamilies In Young Adult Literature, Cynthia Buck Tuttle

This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 25 contemporary young adult fiction books published between 1990-2000, to determine if stepfamilies are portrayed accurately. Contemporary American families are less likely to endure as a traditional biological household. Novels read by young adults may not reflect these new realities. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles stepparents are portrayed positively and they gave their stepchild time and flexibility to adapt to the stepfamily situation. Findings also revealed that the biological relationship was not more important than the marital relationship. There was insufficient data to prove that the …

Mary Mccarthy Writes Her Truth: Memories Of A Catholic Girlhood And The Expansion Of The Autobiographical Tradition, Roxanne H. Hughes

Modernist and postmodernist writer Mary McCarthy was a unique feminist writer. Throughout her writing career, which spanned nearly fifty years, McCarthy authored three autobiographical volumes, nine volumes of fiction, two books about art, and numerous essays and reviews. Regardless of the critical response to her writing, McCarthy wrote her truth her way. McCarthy did not capitulate to traditional patriarchal notions of autobiographical content and form; rather, she challenged patriarchal autobiographical traditions in her texts. This thesis examines McCarthy's first autobiographical volume, the 1957 Memories of a Catholic Girlhood, which describes McCarthy's orphanhood in post-World War I America. The introductory chapter …

A visual meditation or prayer, this beautiful design is several yards wide and takes at least an hour to create. Throughout the day people will walk across this pattern as they go about their business, gradually erasing it with their footsteps. The next day, the woman will create another design.

My research attempts to identify certain phenomena that are directly related to the basic concepts of the axiom which describes the unique process of modernization in Latin America as follows: Premodernity, modernity and postmodernity coexist in Latin American culture, creating a condition of ambiguity and multiple identity. I have found that Multi-temporality, the coexistence of several ages in the same space, has been the most important phenomenon in the development of all Latin American countries. Dorothy Arzner was the first woman to join the Director's Guild of America and one of the only directors to amass a catalog of eighteen films. Despite the respect she managed to win in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s, a stylistic auteur study has never been completed of many of her films. In this thesis, I review seven of Arzner' s films to uncover her stylistic sense of direction and editing to define her status as an auteur. College writing centers are individualized places, which often causes miscommunication of the ideas and purposes centers uphold. However, if centers articulate the use of formative assessment strategies in tutoring writing, they would help alleviate miscommunications and strengthen the way writing centers explain their work in literature and practice; centers can also use formative assessment tools to evaluate their practices. My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. While each of the paintings can be viewed separately, they were intended from the start to be shown together, as I believe the similarities in their subject matter and overall composition have a synergistic effect when viewed as a group. Multicultural Counseling With Latino Youth, Amy S. Roling

The author of this paper examined current literature reviewing Latino youth issues and considerations in counseling this population. First, the author will discuss the importance of multicultural counseling education in counselor training programs. Considerations and factors will then be identified for working specifically with Latino youth. Next, the risk of low academic achievement for Latino youth will be discussed. Then, the author will explore assessing and diagnosing members of the Latino population. Finally, she will describe conclusions about current research and implications for future counselors.

The History And Archeology Of Bethsaida, Kristen Sibold

About one mile north of the Sea of Galilee, in the Jordan River delta, stands a twenty-acre archeological mound known as et-tell. This ancient site has been under excavation since 1987, under the direction of Israeli archaeologist Dr. Rami Arav. In 1989 the Israeli government officially recognized et-tell as the site of Bethsaida, the third most frequently-mentioned city in the New Testament behind Jerusalem and Capernaum ("Bethsaida" 1). The rich history of Bethsaida began long before the New Testament was written, and archeological discoveries provide scholars with a first-hand look at what life was like over two thousand years ago.
