Feminist Issues And Concerns In The Fictions Of Two Egyptian Women Writers: Alifa Rifaat And Nawal El-Saadawi, Shafiqa Anwar Fakir

This thesis involves an examination of feminist issues and concerns in the fictions of two contemporary Egyptian women writers: Alifa Rifaat and Nawal el-Saadawi. The main focus will be on illuminating the social, sexual, economical problems that the literary female characters encounter and how they deal with these various forms of oppressions. Examination of these author's lives and works illustrates the complexity of women within the boundaries of the same nation in matters of gender justice and equality. This further, implicitly, illustrates the complexity of Arab women who tend to be viewed as a cohesive whole.

The Portrayal Of Grandparents In Young Adult Fiction, Sherri L. Imoehl

This study used content analysis to examine contemporary young adult fiction to see how the grandparent-grandchild relationship was portrayed. The titles were randomly chosen books taken from the American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults annual lists 1990-2000. Simple perceptions of grandparents as older adults who see their grandchildren on special occasions are no longer realistic. There is statistical evidence that many grandparents have a significant effect on the lives of young adults. Grandparents are becoming more active in the family household. Novels read by young adults may not mirror these new changes. Findings revealed that in the majority …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hiring and inclusion of women faculty members in private higher education, using Wartburg College as a case study. This study identified and described the educational policies and procedures at Wartburg from 1914 to 1945 related to the hiring of women faculty at Wartburg College.

While the history of women in higher education is well-chronicled, much less is written on the impetus and motivation for hiring women faculty and their impact on the institutions themselves. This dissertation adds to that specific body of knowledge.

Contrary to the commonly held view that the English Renaissance abandoned the realm of Arthuriana as an inspiration for literary and other cultural texts, I demonstrate in my thesis that Arthurian texts from this period took on new forms and shifted their focus. Although a decline in the overall amount of Arthuriana produced during the Renaissance occurred, as opposed to the Middle Ages, interest in Arthur certainly did not die out. When comparing the amount of Arthuriana of the Middle Ages to that of the Renaissance, it is necessary to remember that the Middle Ages covered nearly a millennium, whereas …

Hazards is a collection of seven stories that looks into the mystery of relationships in which emotions are discovered, but in the end, never fully realized. Often through a series of flashbacks triggered by a singe event, these characters collide and struggle with the boundaries between love and friendship. Occupying various point of views that span gender and sexual preference, these narrators often fall into situations too complicated for blame with feelings too new and sincere to be cautious. Liberal humanist critics of James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers have for a long time relegated this politically packed nineteenth-century novel to the realms of the romantic. In the course of this study, I intend to show that Cooper's romantic discourse in The Pioneers is not "innocently romantic" as these critics have postulated. To argue for the political, national, racial, and imperial unconscious of The Pioneers as the latent, but active discourse throughout this text, I rely upon the materialist theories of Fredric Jameson, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, Terry Eagleton, Homi Bhabha, Benedict Anderson, and Edward Said.

I chose African-American literature because in this region of the United States, Iowa in particular, the classrooms tend to be largely homogenous. Children who are from African-American descent find themselves to be in the minority in their classroom settings.

Interaction with mentally and emotionally disabled classmates creates a need for students to better understand their fellow adolescents. They need to be able to read about peers with mental illness. Mentally ill students must also be able to read about others that experience their same or similar conditions. What they read needs to be accurate. In the United States around the turn of the last century, this schema began to be questioned. In 1936, Columbia University published a book discussing the use of theatre in the United States and its possible uses in education: "The Production of Later 19th Century American Drama" by Garrett Leverton. The contents of the recital included Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 140, Wachet auf. ruft uns die Stimme, and Morten Lauridsen's song cycle Les Chansons des Roses. The Concert Chorale presented Sechs Ouartette, Op. 112 by Johannes Brahms and Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo by Franz Joseph Haydn, assisted by a select ensemble of instrumentalists. Many of the elementary poetry books on the shelves of the Manson Northwest Webster Barnum Center library in Barnum, Iowa were not being checked out by students. By reading poetry from those books to third and fourth graders during library time the librarian hoped to stimulate interest in those poetry books and increase circulation of them. After keeping track of the poetry book circulation before and after reading poetry to the groups, the reading did in fact increase the circulation of the poetry books significantly at the .05 level.

This study analyzed how accurately authors of historical fiction portray William Shakespeare, the man and events of his life. An attempt was made to locate 25 books that contained Shakespeare as a character or dealt with events from his life. Twenty-two books were chosen that were written for children, young adults and adults with recommendations for young adults. Each book was read, summarized, reread and examined by completing a content analysis checklist designed to evaluate the portrayal of William Shakespeare and events of his life. A considerable amount of research has stated that gays and lesbians utilize mental health counseling services at a high rate. Therefore it is very likely that counselors encounter lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients. This research focuses on how the sexual orientation of the counselor affects the counseling process when working with LGB clients. In particular, this paper will discuss how the sexual orientation of the counselor facilitates or inhibits client identity development and the coming out process.
