The data used to reconstruct these de facto language policies comes from school documents, newspaper articles and advertisements, memoirs of teachers, politicians and others as well as historical accounts of the formation of Tucson’s first schools. Tollefson (1991) suggests that “language policy is …

Creating Chaos: Us' Policies In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Kelly Shell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Since 1885, when the United States' government became the first to officially recognize King Leopold's claim to the Congo, the United States has continuously undermined the democratic attempts and economic prosperity of the Congolese population. Throughout the DRC's political history the United States has successfully used covert operations under the guise of the United Nations, clandestine CIA maneuvers, and/or the pretense of humanitarian relief to control American interests in the Great Lakes Region. Although other western nations have used their own means to advance their interests in the Congo, this paper will focus on the US' role in the Congo. …

Today, schools face the challenge of providing youth with the self-esteem, stamina, and support they need to survive, be successful, and develop into strong, competent, caring, and responsible citizens. To meet the challenge schools have either developed or adopted character education programs.

Block Scheduling And Music Education: Building Time For Effective Education, Laura J. Horst

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Block scheduling is investigated in this study as a strategy of scheduling, specifically in the secondary vocal music program. There is a need to document the process of effective teaching in vocal music for extended teaching periods. Although there are certain agreed upon elements of successful music programs, much is unknown about teaching in the block format in vocal music. Nationally, music education programs are calling for an increased level of awareness in alternative scheduling, and therefore, teacher preparation programs have answered with various courses and integrated attempts to prepare preservice teachers as well as retrain experienced teachers to work …

From Realism To Minimalism And Back Again: A Comparison Of Anton Chekhov And Raymond Carver, Olga Olegovna Cherchesova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis involves a comparison of two short story writers: Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver. Anton Chekhov has been acknowledged as one of the most significant influences upon the American literature; in particular, he had a strong personal and professional influence on Raymond Carver. Examination of these authors' works traces the tradition of literary inheritance and the development of the short story genre itself in the twentieth century. This thesis explores the survival of Chekhovian narrative tradition in American postmodern short story as epitomized in the work of Raymond Carver.

A Question Of Sanity: Women And In/Sanity In Bessie Head’S A Question Of Power And Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar, Amanda Lynn Graeber Jan 2003

A Question Of Sanity: Women And In/Sanity In Bessie Head’S A Question Of Power And Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar, Amanda Lynn Graeber

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The use of female mental illness in fiction has previously been characterized as a subversive act. Theorists such as Juliet Mitchell, Susan Gubar, and Sandra Gilbert have advocated the use of madness as a way of protesting patriarchal systems and language. Female madness in many cases has been viewed not only as a conscious choice, but as an option that is preferable to sanity. In their view, mental illness is an embodiment of a woman's rejection of the patriarchal order. I would suggest that mental illness is actually about powerlessness. The madwoman is placed in a space outside of normal …
