Brothers' Foundings, Bradley M. Strouse

Honors Program Theses

In 1776, twelve of the thirteen colonies simultaneously but independently declared their independence from Britain. New York, whose delegate had yet to obtain permission to do so from the capital, declared independence shortly after learning the other twelve had done so. In the coming months and years the revolutionaries would fight a tough and bitter war together and . draft the infant nation's first formative document. In this period of great trial and turmoil, the colonies banded together like never before, fighting side by side for their dream of freedom and independence.

Music And Visual Form: An Investigative Study, Kendra Bousfield Jan 2005

Music And Visual Form: An Investigative Study, Kendra Bousfield

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Music and the visual arts are persistent areas of interest in my life; as a person who seeks to understand connections between and within the inner and outer worlds I designed a thesis project toward better appreciation of the relationship between music and art. This document chronicles the progression of my journey into and through an exploration of the association between music and art as well as the development of my thought and art-making regarding this subject. Along the way I encountered more questions than answers; in hope that others will continue this exploration and because questioning is an integral …

Popular Portrayal Versus Historical Evidence Concerning Mary Of Magdala, Robin Ann Yoerger Jan 2005

Popular Portrayal Versus Historical Evidence Concerning Mary Of Magdala, Robin Ann Yoerger

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

ln addition to scholarly sources, I will explore representations of Mary Magdalene in popular culture, such as artwork, drama, and secular literature, to see how these portrayals compare and contrast with those in the texts. It is important to explore these sources because many people today receive their information primarily from secular portrayals, not scholarly studies. As is especially true when misinformation is present, such as in The Da Vinci Code, a reader with no prior factual background on the subject can easily be misguided in his or her understanding of the topic. A:fter considering all these factors, we may …

In The House Of The Mirrors: A Collection Of Short Stories, Adrián Fuentes Jan 2005

In The House Of The Mirrors: A Collection Of Short Stories, Adrián Fuentes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"In the House of the Mirrors" is a compilation of short stories that question the concept of reality. These stories, however, do not only question reality but also supernaturalism, myth, and legend. Is there any magic in reality or are these two terms always in opposition with each other and can never coexist? What happens when we die? If the gods die, what happens when they die? Is our fate already predetermined or do we really have free will? These stories insist that there are events in life that we ignore because they do not fall in what we have …

A second set of questions asked whether these children enjoy reading and how watching television relates to their reading? The third set of questions asked about parents reactions to any difficulties their children had in learning to read and their thoughts involving their children and reading for p)easure? The fourth set of questions …

Is Teaching History Reasonable, Worthwhile, And Beneficial In The Elementary Grades?, Jill Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The literature review paper provided reassures the reader that in fact it is beneficial and most importantly, vital to teach historical knowledge to students. Through extensive research, multiple studies confirmed the importance of history instruction in the elementary classroom accompanied with worthwhile, meaningful lessons that allow the students to truly analyze, explore, and internalize the material.

In attempt to provide a quality education for all American students, we must take the following steps: implementing and analyzing more research in regards to history instruction in the elementary classroom; ensure that all educators have an adequate wealth of background knowledge in the …

Using Space To Describe Space: American Sign Language And The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, Cindee Calton Jan 2005

Using Space To Describe Space: American Sign Language And The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, Cindee Calton

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

My study sought to combine two topics that have recently generated much interest among anthropologists. One of these topics is American Sign Language, the other is linguistic relativity. Although both topics have been a part of the literature for some time, neither has been studied extensively until the recent past. Both present exciting new horizons for understanding culture, particularly language and culture.

The first of these two topics is the study of American Sign Language. The reason for its previous absence from the literature has to do with unfortunate prejudice which, for a long time, kept ASL from being recognized …

From Craft To Art: A Philosophy Of Jazz Pedagogy Developed From Performance, Educational And Personal Experiences, Thomas Lawrence Giampietro Jan 2005

From Craft To Art: A Philosophy Of Jazz Pedagogy Developed From Performance, Educational And Personal Experiences, Thomas Lawrence Giampietro

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Am I an artist? Many jazz musicians and educators are afraid to ask that question, and many may not even be sure of what it means to be an artist. Is artistry vital to the survival and evolution of the music? It is this writer's position that it is and that the very nature of jazz music demands artistry from its participants. If artistry is the jazz musician's goal, then the logical goal of jazz educators is to help facilitate artistry in their students. This goal should remain the same regardless of the level of the student. The level of …

Mad Art And The Essential Image: Unearthing The Conversation Between Oscar Wilde’S The Picture Of Dorian Gray And Roland Barthes’S Camera Lucida, Sarah Joy Cowger Jan 2005

Mad Art And The Essential Image: Unearthing The Conversation Between Oscar Wilde’S The Picture Of Dorian Gray And Roland Barthes’S Camera Lucida, Sarah Joy Cowger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Roland Barthes's notion of "mad art" (introduced in Camera Lucida)--that is, art which is compelling, arresting, and uncovering-serves as a useful lens through which the portrait in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray may be viewed. In doing so, Wilde's framed image, behaving as mad art, must expose Dorian's authentic self. Such an expose is, importantly, both the product of a spectator's engaged eye as it is the result of a piece which always already contains an essence. When both elements are present (that is, both the essentialness of the art and the engagement of the viewer), the "text" …

The Developmental Process Of Reflection In Youth Ministry, Laura Bowers Jan 2005

The Developmental Process Of Reflection In Youth Ministry, Laura Bowers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The research of applied developmental practice of reflection is inconsistent and its theoretical framework changes depending on the disciplinary perspective. The variability is illustrative of reflection's complexity and its inconsistency as an ideal. This research attempts not only to define reflection within the context of the Prairie Lakes youth ministry program but also to highlight specific programmatic elements that are involved in the process. Through text analysis by the Minnesota Contextual and Content Analysis program and the theoretical guidance of Kohlberg, Mayer and Dewey insight into an applied reflective practice is formed.
