“Votes For Women”: Gender, ‘Race,’ Class, And The Suffrage Cartoons Of Life And Harper’S Weekly, 1890-1916, Mellisa Annesha Campbell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The 1890s onward ushered in a younger generation of female pro-suffragists in the United States of America (USA). Theoretically slamming the door on the prescriptive ideal of domesticity and women's abstinence from vice and exercise, they disrupted the "traditional" gender fiction or arrangement. In doing so, they made unequivocal that gender, 'race,' and class were not merely culturally constructed categories of identity, but products of the heteropatriarchal power structure which produce and reproduce masculine dominance over women. These female pro-suffragists were, more often than not, condemned by contemporary popular press. They were prevalently depicted as elite white women seeking amusement …

Written On The Body By Jeanette Winterson In The Context Of Nomadology, Maria Goltsova
Written On The Body By Jeanette Winterson In The Context Of Nomadology, Maria Goltsova
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study provides an interpretation of the novel Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson in the context of nomadology, a post-modern philosophical project initiated by Gilles Deleuze. My analysis, concentrating on the plot and the narrative strategy of the novel, explores the concept of nomadic subjectivity and demonstrates how it is constructed in the text and how, if at all, it can be challenged. It also examines melancholy and loss, and their role in the formation of nomadic identity. In the novel, Louise is presented as an object of the narrator's desire; she is articulated through the examination and …

Iowa Multiverse: Stories, Darek James Benesh
Iowa Multiverse: Stories, Darek James Benesh
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This work of creative writing consists of two stories, each of which concerns characters in closed communities in Iowa: an apartment building and a small town. The stories play with the concepts of interconnectedness, multiple perspectives, linearity, and "emergent meaning"-that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. The first story is comprised of interconnected third-person threads and alternate perspective views. The second story is concerned with multiple first-person vignettes dealing with interpretations of shared experiences. These stories imagine the concept of perspective as a moveable, free-floating "mind camera," able to follow any character at will, viewing …
The Revolt Revisited: A Study Of Popular 20th-Century American Small-Town Literature, Ted Ray Duitsman
The Revolt Revisited: A Study Of Popular 20th-Century American Small-Town Literature, Ted Ray Duitsman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The subject of small towns has both attracted and made some of the greatest authors in American literature. Through stunning imagery, description, and dialogue they create realistic portrayals of this places that lay them bare for all to see. Generous treatments portray them as generally good places that uphold the myth of small towns as utopian villages. For those with more unfavorable views, however, the literature shows the dullness of the town as well as the provinciality and closed-mindedness of its people. It is unfair to categorize some of the better works into either/or arguments however, for they involve more …

The Process To Perform, Nicole Suzanne Farley
The Process To Perform, Nicole Suzanne Farley
Honors Program Theses
A musical performance is much more than technical execution of notes on a page. A performance is a way to communicate the deepest part of the human soul across culture, language, or racial barriers. Music can bring one to tears or turn their mood sour in a matter of minutes. It is a powerful medium of emotional communication, communicating far beyond the confines provided by the written word. However, wonderful music-making does not just happen. Like any academic or artistic discipline, it takes intense study, time, thought, and practice to become a work of art. In preparing my senior recital, …
Senior Voice Recital, Sarah Jo Duvel
Senior Voice Recital, Sarah Jo Duvel
Honors Program Theses
The process of preparing and presenting this thesis recital has been a very educational and eyeopening. There were low points, such as stress over pronunciation and music memorization, frustration over rehearsal coordination, and fatigue from asking so much of myself so often. However, there were also many high points: advancement in my vocal lessons, growth in my vocal technique, further mastery of foreign languages, opportunities to make music with my colleagues, and improved proficiencies in the business aspects of singing (publicity, networking, etc.). Though this was not my first vocal recital, it was certainly the most rewarding; the knowledge and …
The Loathsome And The Virtuous: An Examination Of Sleeping Beauty And Snow White In Literature And Film, Heather Marie Birk
The Loathsome And The Virtuous: An Examination Of Sleeping Beauty And Snow White In Literature And Film, Heather Marie Birk
Honors Program Theses
ln this analysis I look at the differences between written text and film fairy tales, and the extent to which they help children overcome moral complexities. There are two important ideas represented in written fairy tales that place fairy tales within a tradition of moral education for children. First, the relationship between prince, princess and the wicked fairy or queen resembles the relationship between Adam, Eve and Satan. This relationship is only visible in the written version of the tales, because it depends on the Princesses playing dominant roles as Eve played in Genesis. Second, the use of the Seven …
Handful Of Dust: Poems & Memoir, Kimberly Jo Groninga
Handful Of Dust: Poems & Memoir, Kimberly Jo Groninga
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Handful of Dust is a collection of poetry and memoir which travels through a number of subjects including trees, family, dreams, death, song, sex, and silence. Weaving through the collection is the idea that what we hold in our hands-bits of memory, cakes of earth with dangling roots, understandings and perceptions-is a place to begin. In a palmful of tiny particles, images and connections emerge. And they begin to tell the story of who we are. Identity, indeed, is the primary theme of many of the pieces within this collection.

Strategies For Bridging The Gender Gap In Technology Use : From Education To The Workplace, Martha Frazier
Graduate Research Papers
This literature review is about strategies for bridging the gender gap in technology use in the classroom and the workplace. The research done on the subject indicates that a gender gap does exist in the classroom and the workplace. The conclusion of this review suggests several methods to aid instructors and employers in bringing about equity in the classroom and the workforce. The implementation of diversity training, mentoring, and role modeling are just …

Striking Out: The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League Failed To Break Gender Barriers, Lindsey Letcher
Striking Out: The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League Failed To Break Gender Barriers, Lindsey Letcher
Honors Program Theses
It is essential to look at the conditions that made the League possible in the first place and also the conditions that led to its demise. To do this, players' backgrounds must be investigated. Who were these women? Where did they come from? Where did they go after the League? These are all fundamental questions that must be answered. One way to look at how the women and the League were perceived by society is to look at the daily reporting of the League in local town newspapers and larger national publications. These newspapers carried daily stats, stories and sometimes …

An Exploration In Exhibit Design, Maria A. Buteler Tillard
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
It was the process of becoming aware of the importance of graphic design as an essential tool for communicating ideas that led to my decision to continue my education in the field of graphic design. My prior degree in architecture also influenced my 1 graduate work since it has provided me with an understanding of the effective use of two and three-dimensional space. In general, it was the opportunity to make connections between architecture and graphic design that prompted me to study at the University of Northern Iowa. Architecture and graphic design, while very different, share certain basic concepts that …

The Value Of Black And White In An Era Of Color: A Textual Analysis Of Black And White Illustrations In Picture Books, Theresa Forret
The Value Of Black And White In An Era Of Color: A Textual Analysis Of Black And White Illustrations In Picture Books, Theresa Forret
Graduate Research Papers
Children's picture books have aesthetic, personal, and educational value. The illustrations within picture books may capture the attention of young readers, create a positive attitude toward books and reading, enhance the story, and may assist with comprehension. A majority of the children's picture books published today are illustrated with bright, vibrant colors. Books illustrated in black and white are less common and perhaps less appealing to children. This study investigated three questions. Are there identifiable commonalities within the visual elements in black and white picture book illustrations? Are there commonalities and patterns in the mood, genre, and setting of picture …

What Happened To Dad: A Portrayal Of Teenage Fathers In Young Adult Literature, Becky R. Schafer Andrews
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to see if authors of realistic fiction accurately portray the characteristics of teenage fathers. Abundant fictional novels on the topic of teenage pregnancy are in print; however, most seemed concerned with teen mothers and neglect teen fathers. How teen fathers react to being told about the conception to accepting responsibility for their actions was evaluated through a checklist. This research demonstrated that a realistic portrayal of teen fathers is absent from much young adult fiction. In sharing this research with others it is in hopes that more authors will give teen fathers a more …
Voicing Women's Resistance Within Religious Studies: An Interrogation Of Rational Choice Theory, Anne E. Tedore
Voicing Women's Resistance Within Religious Studies: An Interrogation Of Rational Choice Theory, Anne E. Tedore
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
While women are generally oppressed within hierarchical and patriarchal religious traditions, researchers continue to detail the ways women negotiate power and construct meaning in religion. Within this thesis I interrogate the use of rational choice theory, a prominent theory utilized to describe religious behavior, as a framework for the analysis of women's religious experience and agency. I compare two texts, Brenda Brasher's Godly Women: Fundamentalism and Female Power and Jeanette Rodriguez's Our Lady of Guadalupe: Faith and Empowerment Among Mexican-American Women, in order to illustrate the inadequacies of rational choice theory in describing the religious experiences of marginalized women. I …
