Those Magnificent Men Or Their Flying Machines?: Tradition And Modernity In The 1928 National Air Races, Joshua James Waddle Jan 2009

Those Magnificent Men Or Their Flying Machines?: Tradition And Modernity In The 1928 National Air Races, Joshua James Waddle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The history of aviation in the United States between 1920 and 1940 describes two phases--the dangerous aeronautic stunts and cross-country flights of the 1920s and the regulation of the 1930s—but does not analyze how the transition between the two occurred. The beginning of this transition occurred in the latter 1920s. First, American businesses, attempting to establish commercial air travel, downplayed the perceived danger as they marketed the flying experience to the general public. Second, women pilots showed that planes did not require mystical, unidentifiable masculine qualities in order to be flown and landed safely. The actual transition, however, took place …

Ambigrams: The Art And The Math, Callie Kronlage Jan 2009

Ambigrams: The Art And The Math, Callie Kronlage

Honors Program Theses

Because ambigrams are a relatively new concept, I found little mathematical research on them. Throughout this paper, I will address the role of ambigrams as a mathematical entity, an artistic outlet, and even an educational tool. Along with ways to use ambigrams, there are also descriptions of the nine different types of ambigrams, and a chart that can be used to create two of the most common types of ambigrams. Mathematically, ambigrams contain many symmetrical aspects, which are important to the study of Geometry. Within this, I have researched mathematical aspects of three of the ambigram types and found some …

Through literature review and interviews with music educators and female jazz musicians, this study will examine whether some of the teaching techniques that allow girls to succeed in concert band could be adapted to …

Erotics Of Textuality, Megan M. Gallagher Jan 2009

Erotics Of Textuality, Megan M. Gallagher

Honors Program Theses

In understanding the complex nature of textual studies, an important aspect, but often overlooked as just a part of the publishing process, is the different set of biases that each editor imposes on the text. What is often studied is the relationship of the author to the text and developing the enjoyment that one can experience in the exploration of what is referred to as authorial intent. This concept of authorship, however, is one that is distinct to the modem audience. When one considers a text in a modem literacy the single person responsible for what is thought of as …

Arabs And Muslims In Orientalist Hollywood: Trends In Perception Before And After 9/11, Marwa Hassan Genena Jan 2009

Arabs And Muslims In Orientalist Hollywood: Trends In Perception Before And After 9/11, Marwa Hassan Genena

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Before 9/11, almost all Hollywood Orientalist films fit the tenets of Orientalist discourse, which Edward Said describes in Orientalism. Brushed with a series of negative qualities, the Oriental character is usually represented as an absolute opposite to the Western character, whose perfection is highlighted by the former's numerous flaws. Not only is the Arab or Muslim character in pre-9/11 Hollywood dumb and inept, but evil and dangerous as well. Additionally, Orientalist filmmakers avoid a solid, deep construction of their Arab or Muslim characters in such a way that the personal or humane side of these characters is completely ignored. In …

Studying the local community helps students learn more about the place they live. It helps them comprehend the past, perform in the present, and predict the future. Understanding its history and people builds a sense of pride and belonging. Currently, the local community is studied by the third grade at Forest City Elementary. Teaching and learning about the community requires careful selection and presentation of materials. Students learn through narratives, primary sources, cultural universals, and the interaction between new sources of information and prior experiences. Unfortunately, information about the community of Forest City is lacking. Material is not easily accessible …

The Stuff That Affects You: Fiction, Poetry, And Doggerel, Lisa D. Brodersen Jan 2009

The Stuff That Affects You: Fiction, Poetry, And Doggerel, Lisa D. Brodersen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Inevitably writers write about the stuff that affects them. Maybe the stuff that affects them is life-altering, or in some way profound or sublime, like untimely death, divorce, or being in love. Or maybe it's the mundane stuff, like marbles, cats, crows, weeds, wind, rain, or riding a bike. This thesis includes fiction, poetry, and light verse (which I prefer to call doggerel) triggered by all of that stuff, but I've twisted and embellished it beyond the literal or whole truth, until what remains is nothing but the truth.

A Light Unto Our Path: Toward A Mutual Understanding Of Fundamentalist Christianity And Science, Kassidy K. Lyons

Honors Program Theses

My research into the Christian fundamentalist and scientific worldviews shows that existing hostility between the two can be attributed to extremists on either side. Such polarization can be a hindrance to all involved by inhibiting scientific learning and disregarding valid methods to signify and understand one’s place in the world. I explore each worldview and its validity as well as provide examples of how each can be harmful when taken to the extreme. I then outline philosophies by Stephen Jay Gould, Michael Ruse, Marcus Borg, Karl Popper and others who deny extremism and will allow an individual to find middle …
