Selections From The Uni Permanent Art Collection, Charles M. Adelman

Faculty Book Gallery

The University of Northern Iowa (UNI), specifically the Department of Art and its Gallery of Art in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, has been the home of a substantial collection of pieces of art for many years. Better known as the Permanent Collection, the Gallery of Art is the repository of paintings, etchings, drawings, lithographs and other artistic modi. The Collection holds objects donated by alumni, benefactors and faculty from the famous masterpiece to the not so well known. Still, all the pieces in the Collection, from Rembrandt to Rauschenber and from Dali to Grosz, are precious in …

Kurt Vonnegut, Authorship And The Purpose Of Literature: A Study Of Kilgore Trout, Danielle M. Benesh Jan 2010

Kurt Vonnegut, Authorship And The Purpose Of Literature: A Study Of Kilgore Trout, Danielle M. Benesh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The works of Kurt Vonnegut demonstrate the author's lifelong interest in the purpose of literature and the role of the author in a postmodern society. Through the use of his most frequently recurring character, the science-fiction writer Kilgore Trout, Vonnegut questions the ways in which an author's works influence readers and ponders the relationship between society and art. These themes are explored in detail in the four novels which feature Kilgore Trout most prominently: God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Slaughterhouse-Five, Breakfast of Champions and Timequake. A study of these novels reveals a progressive personification of the Trout figure, as …

Master Of Music Graduate Recital, Teale Lora Burford Jan 2010

Master Of Music Graduate Recital, Teale Lora Burford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The elements earth, water, fire, and air, are essential for continuing and sustaining life on Earth. They are both life-giving and destructive-bringers of fortune or ruin-in the natural world. Central to this program is an artist's ability to translate these elements into poetic metaphors of the human condition and emotion: burning passion, the fertile soil of the soul, the winds of fortune, and the deep waters of despair. The realization of compositional techniques used to exemplify the four elements and the character communicated by the music is the objective of this recital. This performance involves works from all principle style …

Adrift In The Wake Of Modernism: Music, Mind, And Meaning In The Works Of James Joyce, April E. Cook Jan 2010

Adrift In The Wake Of Modernism: Music, Mind, And Meaning In The Works Of James Joyce, April E. Cook

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since Joyce's rise to critical prominence over the course of the twentieth century, a diverse corpus of scholarship has emerged around the Joyce canon that is nearly as vast and as multifaceted as the works themselves. While many have explored Joyce's affinity for music and his unprecedented synthesis of musical and literary modes, relatively few have examined his works' musical properties in the context of the contemporaneous musical developments of the early avant-garde and jazz movements. This study explores the trajectory of Joyce's engagement with musical forms and techniques, ranging from the primarily allusive relations of his early works to …

A Research Project Contributing To African American Children's Literature Based In The 1950s Time Period In Midwestern Culture, Paula Noelle Bolander Jan 2010

A Research Project Contributing To African American Children's Literature Based In The 1950s Time Period In Midwestern Culture, Paula Noelle Bolander

Graduate Research Papers

African American characters have been portrayed in children's literature since the 1800s. There is a lack of information available for children to learn about African Americans from the 1950s time period in the Midwest. Therefore, a nonfiction trade book based on African American culture in Burlington, Iowa will alleviate the gap in children's literature for the United States in the Midwest. The nonfiction trade book was based on Evangeline Ray's life growing up in Burlington, Iowa, in the 1950s. The vignettes portrayed in the book were created on the basis of 15 interviews with the researcher over a period of …
