Baseball has been an important part of American popular culture for over one hundred years. In the early part of the twentieth century baseball was the nation's most pervasive sport and symbolized many values and attitudes that Americans held dear. During the late nineteenth century, adult baseball teams were formed within small towns across the nation. The team members were typically considered amateur athletes playing "town team" baseball. Over the years, as they were given opportunities to make money from their play, the term of semi-professional was applied to many of these players.

Pianist Elena Lyalina, flautist Bridget Hill, and harpist Acacia Scott collaborated with Ms. Bogodist to present selected works by various composers. Abi Coffer performed a Master of Music Flute Recital at six o'clock in the evening on Friday, February 24, 2012 in Davis Hall, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Ms. Coffer opened the recital with a work from the Baroque era, the melancholy Fantasie no. 12 in g minor for solo flute by Georg Philipp Telemann. For the next piece, Ms. Coffer was joined by faculty pianist Polina Khatsko in a performance of a twentieth-century, three movement Sonata by Jindrich Feld. When Pan's Labyrinth opened in 2006 the Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was relatively unknown among U.S. film connoisseurs and critics. Although the film opened first in Mexico and Spain, it immediately received international attention in spite of the film not being dubbed into English. In this way, the film's success is particularly noteworthy because it overcame the barriers often associated with a non-English international film. Viewers are immediately drawn to the protagonist, Ofelia, beginning with her daydreams and fairy tales before the film becomes a complicated narrative in which reality and fantasy collide. The purpose of this research project was to create a children's story cookbook that addresses the dietary adaptions to avoid gluten and wheat for children diagnosed with celiac. Children's literature has a need for a cookbook that will have recipes appealing to children and have pictures that will make the recipes/ food more visually attractive. The book also included child friendly directions so that a parent can assist a child in preparing the food. The story cookbook also told the story of a young child who has celiac, who is learning to eat differently and to adapt to her disease. …

This thesis is a work of fiction. It is a short novel written to entertain and to explore ideas of identity, family, friendship, and what it takes to find a place in the modem world. It follows a young man named Noah through the events of a single summer as he tries to make sense of his life. Its setting and characters are definitively Iowan, but its events and conflicts speak to the human condition at large. The story's overarching metaphor is the Mandlebrot set, a mathematical sequence of infinite complexity. Through the course of the novel the main character …

The poems in this thesis explore ideas of habitation, animality, humanity, community, and the inevitable disconnection experienced by the lack of communication between the interior and exterior. These poems attempt to construct the in between. The "I" character of these poems lives with several animals and insects throughout the sequence of these poems. The "I" character identifies something valuable in these beings, something unknowable outside the realm of physical coexistence. The same can be said of the animals, who seem to find comfort, sustenance, and kinship with the "I" character. The "house" becomes a blending of the interior and exterior, …

The construction of space has become such a common process for modernity that its culture would argue spatial experiences as intrinsic in nature. However, it is through the consideration of the experience of space and spatial boundaries one notices the cooperative nature of space. Looking through the lens of Anglo-Saxon womens' roles as peaceweavers, cupbearers, inciters or "whetting women" in their ability to practice and assert power, resistance and agency within conjugal bonds with husbands or lovers, we can better understand the ambiguous Old English poem The Wife's Lament. By exploring the poem, documents that history has left us, and previous foundational research, I will investigate whether the role women played in Anglo Saxon society mattered, and if either way, they had significant opportunity for agency.

In this thesis, I seek to uncover the nature of translation through examining those elements of "Wulf and Eadwacer" that work against producing a definitive translation. Using the combined lenses of literary analysis and the philosophy of language, I will also investigate the ties between translation and interpretation inherent in this work and what we can learn about the project of translation in general, ultimately arriving at my own re-presentation of the text. The purpose of my thesis project is to develop and document an approach to costume design that would support this method by creating realistic visual images of the characters the actors developed. This portfolio displays my complete costume design process for Dying City. It includes notes, sketches, research images, and charts that helped inform the final costume design for the production. Schubert's Piano Sonata in C minor, D.958, is one of the last three sonatas by the Viennese composer. The last three sonatas are recognized by many music historians as autobiographical.¹ They also represent a different style of composition than Schubert's earlier works. The mature style found in these sonatas differs from his earlier style as evidenced by the use of vivid expression, greater length, and prolonged development of thematic material. The last three sonatas include D.958 in C minor, D.959 in A major, and D.960 in B-flat major. While all three sonatas are performed often, D.960 is the most …

This study--a philosophical exploration, partly in an autoethnographical account--provides an empirical demonstration that one's personal project has a strong and positive impact on the dissertation process both for endurance to complete the process and for quality of the product. Lorraine Elena Roses and Ruth Elizabeth Randolph, with their publication, Harlem Renaissance And Beyond: Literary Biographies of 100 Black Women Writers 1900-1945, embarked on a mission to bring to the forefront of literary scholarship black women who wrote significant works in the early twentieth century, but who have received little or no recognition. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American culture experienced a profound fascination with primitivism, wilderness, and raw nature. Numerous outdoor activities became increasingly popular as Americans sought to revitalize the national vigor they envisioned as inextricably connected to a life close to nature. One of these activities was woodcraft camping; that is, a minimalistic form of wilderness recreation that valued simplicity and self-sufficiency as opposed to luxuriant idleness. Woodcraft campers expressed a deep dissatisfaction with what they considered to be the mind-numbing, spirit-crushing emptiness of modem life.
