Graduate Viola Recital, Andrea Lynn Alert

Andrea Alert performed a graduate viola recital at six o'clock in the evening on Friday, March 29, 2013, in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center's Davis Hall. Pianist Serena Hou collaborated with Ms. Alert to present selected works by various composers. The program opened with Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonata in G Major, BWV 1027, followed by Gregor Piagiorsky's arrangement of Franz Joseph Haydn's Divertimento in D Major, followed by the first movement of Paul Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher. The program ended with Sonata for Viola and Piano, op. 22 by Marion Bauer.

While boxing and baseball have been common subjects of historical study, other sports of the nineteenth century have been comparatively neglected by historians. Professional wrestling, in particular, has received very little attention as a sport, as opposed to its twentieth century “sports entertainment” incarnation. What attention it has received has most commonly been through the lens of social history, focusing on wrestling as theater or its psychosexual overtones. Missing from its history is any consideration of the economic factors which influence the evolution of any professional endeavor. On the 22nd of February, 2013, Tana Denning presented a half-recital in partial completion of her master's degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. The recital was held at 6pm in Davis Hall at the University of Northern Iowa. Pieces on the program included two preludes by Debussy, Italian Concerto by Bach, an original arrangement of a traditional Irish melody, and Scherzo No. 4 by Chopin. The second half of Ms. Denning's recital requirement was spent on a pedagogical project regarding the use of folk music in piano lessons. This project is outlined at the end of the abstract.

This thesis examines the domestic culture of the United States during the first two decades of the Cold War, using popular games as an interpretive tool to expand our understanding of the changes that took place. Four board games which were popular during the 1950s – Scrabble, chess, Clue, and Risk – explain some of the anxieties and evolutions in mass culture. Scrabble illustrated the nation's growing respect for expertise and, along with game theory, the hope for intellectual solutions to the country's problems. On May 20, 1862 Congress signed into effect the Homestead Act which provided 160 acres of surveyed government land to any citizen over the age of twenty-one and who was a head of household. One of the most historical aspects of this act was that it allowed single women the opportunity to own land. Not only were native-born women taking advantage of such a lucrative offer, but the women of Norway saw just the opening they needed to venture out on their own. The purpose of this study was to determine how fully characters with disabilities were developed in children's literature. The researcher examined a set of children's fictional books which contained persons with mental and physical disabilities. The sample of books used was gathered using the following method: the Children's Core Collection database was searched using the advanced option. The key words entered were handicapped and disabled, with the limitation to fiction books. The recommendation level chosen was Core Collection and Highly Recommended. Books with a publication year of 2002 or newer were selected. The grade levels criteria used were grades K-6. …

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries in the United States, images of Africa and Africans were prevalent throughout society. Africans were described as primitive or child-like and were contrasted with the so-called high civilization of middle-class Anglo-Saxons. This thesis will look at these images and attempt to complicate the current historiography on United States images of Africa. Furthering Jackson Lears’s theories of antimodernism in Progressive Era United States, I argue that the images produced of Africa and Africans were attempts at regeneration and intense experiences. This thesis' point of discovery was the standout feature. Originally, the qualities of light versus dark, variance in edge quality, muted colors, and organic shapes were features as well. Those qualities were used in the thesis process but more as tools than as points to be studied intensely. The discoveries included a concept to proceed with not only in this thesis but for future works, determining time needed to complete numbers of works, and the amount of analysis and purposefulness needed to create a piece from nothing. Public school bands teach students valuable artistic expression as they work together to learn and perform music in instrumental ensembles. Music educators who claim this purpose need to sustain student interest and involvement in band to continue the art form, because band is an elective course in which students join voluntarily.
