Beverly Daniel Tatum’s most popular work outlines racial identity development and the challenges with having meaningful conversations on race. In order to engage the reader in self-reflection to have such conversations, Tatum uses practical examples from her experience as a parent and a college professor. She highlights conversations she has had with her own children about race and racism, as well as teaching activities she has used and discussions she has facilitated to engage her college students in recognizing, understanding, and embracing their racial identity.

What Are Little Girls Made Of? is a postcolonial exploration of nursery rhymes in which animation and the textures of personal memories are ironically juxtaposed to comment on the continued legacy of European cultural colonialism in India.

As an Indian woman reminisces about growing up in India, a child’s drawing unfolds on the screen, narrating the well-known English nursery rhyme, “Little Miss Muffet.” The woman recalls her deep desire for a white dress and blond hair, as her own dark skin relegates her to the position of “boy” in school plays. When I was asked to prepare this song in memory of José Esteban Muñoz, I thought it would fly from my fingers and land perfectly onto a page like those so many obituaries I wrote in my former years working as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. But those skills don’t transfer here. My curser remained mute, blinking angrily at me to write about a man I never met but whose work was a bright star. It is a sad honor to participate in the celebration of José Esteban Muñoz’s life and works.

A Reflection On The Work Of Late Yale Professor Sam See, Sarah E. Kersh

Over the course of his too-short career, Sam See’s scholarship focused on queerness, race, and form in American and British Modernism. See’s work examines texts by a range of authors including canonical figures such as Henry James, Langston Hughes, Virginia Woolf, and Ernest Hemingway, and more marginalized writers such as Djuna Barnes, and Charles Henri Ford and Parker Tyler. In his essay on Ford and Tyler’s 1933 novel The Young and the Evil, he argues for an analysis of the text’s “generically dual ambitions…[which,] I propose, enable contemporary literary historians to make modernism new” (1078).
