Confucian Role Ethics: Issues Of Naming, Translation, And Interpretation, Sarah Mattice Jan 2019

Confucian Role Ethics: Issues Of Naming, Translation, And Interpretation, Sarah Mattice

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

This chapter explores the arguments behind considering Confucian ethics as a kind of "role ethics", as articulated by Roger Ames and others. I see at least three sets of concerns that animate the reasoning behind Confucian role ethics: naming, translation, and interpretation. In terms of naming, I discuss this project as an example of zhengming 正名, or proper naming, which is a common Confucian ethical project. Confucian thinkers are often preoccupied with appropriate categorization, one species of which is naming. The naming of Confucian ethics as role ethics, I argue, is not only consistent with but is situated in a …

The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers Jan 2019

The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers

UNF Undergraduate Honors Theses

We each are presented with a choice; do we remain in the cave of ignorance or embark on the philosopher’s journey. Your choice will determine the way in which you interpret this paper. However, I will confidently make the assumption that you, like myself, desire to embrace an existence guided by the light of wisdom. This thesis is one of many chapters in the philosopher’s journey, dealing with animals and (cutting through the jargon) kindness. I have found that a lot of scholarship on animal ethics acknowledges a truth, but does not acknowledge that the application of such a truth …

The Ambassador’S Right-Hand Man: Terrick Hamilton At The Porte, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2019

The Ambassador’S Right-Hand Man: Terrick Hamilton At The Porte, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

These vivid comments by Terrick Hamilton, secretary at the British embassy in Constantinople during the ambassadorship of Lord Strangford, evoked the escalating crisis that engulfed the Ottoman realm in the early 1820s. At a tense but pivotal moment in Ottoman history, the Empire of Sultan Mahmud II faced daunting internal and external pressures triggered by war, revolt, sectarian strife, the erosion of effective ruling institutions, and European penetration. The Greek insurrection against the Sublime Porte broke out in 1821 in the Danubian Principalities, the Peloponnese, and other Greek-inhabited areas, morphing into a prolonged and costly conflict between Ottoman troops and …

Robert Searle And The Rise Of The English In The Caribbean, Brandon Wade Alford Jan 2019

Robert Searle And The Rise Of The English In The Caribbean, Brandon Wade Alford

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the career of Robert Searle, an English privateer, that conducted state-sponsored attacks against the Spanish and Dutch in the Caribbean from 1655 to 1671. Set within the Buccaneering Period of the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1680), Robert Searle’s personal actions contributed to the rise of the English in the Caribbean to a position of dominance over Spain, which dominated the region from 1492 until the 1670s. Searle serves as a window into the contributions of thousands of nameless men who journeyed to the Caribbean as a member of Oliver Cromwell’s Western Design Fleet. These men failed in …

An Analysis Of Writer's Block: Causes, Characteristics, And Solutions, Sarah J. Ahmed Jan 2019

An Analysis Of Writer's Block: Causes, Characteristics, And Solutions, Sarah J. Ahmed

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous research suggests that writer’s block can have multiple causes and occur at any part of the writing process (Boice, 1985; Flaherty, 2015; Kaufman & Kaufman, 2013). A survey was distributed to a sample of 146 writers with experience in a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres. Research objectives concerning the causes and characteristics of writer’s block were investigated using mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative analyses. Effective solutions provided by writers were presented and described. Blocks with physiological and motivational components were the most frequently reported in general and were found to interfere with the composition process more than the creative …

Cut A Rug (Score), Gary Smart Jan 2019

Cut A Rug (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

“Cut a Rug” (2019) for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano

This one movement fantasy is dance music. More specifically, it is an homage to 1920’s American dance music. The piece works well as a concert music, but I think a choreographer might find it fun to work with. “Cut a Rug” is energetic, dramatic and abstract, often toying with the motive of an alternating third. But there’s more than that. I found four pop tunes from the 1920’s which feature that alternating third interval and incorporated these tunes into the mix. You might listen for “Has Anybody Seen My …

Three Fantasies On African American Songs For String Quartet (Score), Gary Smart Jan 2019

Three Fantasies On African American Songs For String Quartet (Score), Gary Smart

Music Faculty Research and Scholarship

I have been interested in mixing cultural aesthetics and musical styles for all of my life. Gunther Schuller coined the term “third stream” to describe the intertwining of American jazz with the Western European musical traditions. Of course there are so many branches to the trees of both African American music and the European traditions, that Schuller’s term can only have a very general meaning. Still, the “third stream” description does fit my Three Fantasies. In these three movements I combine different materials, styles, and developmental methods, mixing traditions freely, as I attempt to create a specifically American new music. …
