Logistical Support Of Union Military Operations In Middle And Eastern Tennessee, 1862-1864, Patrick Laughlin

History ETDs

The armies considered here, and the area in which they operated, have been selected as most nearly representative of the influence technology was beginning to have on war. This specialized Nineteenth Century effect was, of course, a harbinger of the day in which we live -- when technological application to warfare has reached the point of total human and industrial mobilization.

Carl Van Vechten And The Twenties: Literature, Society And The Arts, Edward G. Lueders

American Studies ETDs

It is seldom that a critical assessment of a writer's work can even attempt to be definitive during the writer's lifetime. It is even more rare when that writer continues as an active observer, participant and contributor in the humanities for two decades after publishing his last book and publicly announcing his retirement from writing. But such a writer is Carl Van Vechten. His first volume was published in 1915, his last in 1932. In those seventeen years he produced nineteen volumes, ten of them collections of essays on music and the arts, two devoted to the lore of the …

History Of Fort Union, New Mexico, Thomas J. Mclaughlin Mar 1952

History Of Fort Union, New Mexico, Thomas J. Mclaughlin

History ETDs

Through the acquisition of the Territory of New Mexico, the United States fell heir to a problem different from any that it had encountered in any previous advance of the frontier. During the settlement of the area east of the Mississippi River it made little difference where, or how many, military posts were established once the plenitude of navigable rivers made their supply and upkeep a relatively inexpensive matter. The fertile lands of the region soon enabled a settlement to develop near the post which provided protection and a market for the surplus of a growing community. Within a few …

Brazilian-American Cooperation: 1940-1945, Oscar Matasar

History ETDs

In looking retrospectively at the scope and nature of Brazilian-American cooperation during the war years, 1939-1945, one finds confirmation again of the traditional friendship of the two nations. This friendship, which began in the early history of Brazil as an independent nation, found many avenues of mutual expression. While the United States had in prospect evaluated Brazil's strategic position geographically, her expectations for economic help were more than realized by Brazil's readiness and ability to give timely and valuable aid. That both nations mutually benefited there can be no doubt. Each by helping the other had in effect made for …

Cleopolis And Persepolis; A Comparison Of Marlowe And Spenser., Edith H. Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to compare Marlowe and Spenser in a number of specific attitudes and achievements as poetic interpreters of the other primarily dramatic, I am not comparing specific works of each as literary types, or contrasting the men in their lives or specific relationships to other literary individuals. Predestination In Chaucer's Tales, Marie Sommerville Jan 1952

Predestination In Chaucer's Tales, Marie Sommerville

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis proposes to examine how, according to Chaucer, human lives seem to be directed and how individuals in their thoughts and deeds reach toward this direction. Through this examination of Chaucer's characters, the thesis hopes to help in an understanding and appreciation of the Canterbury Tales. It is clear that Chaucer made fairly consistent use of a system of cause and effect explained by Boethius and others, and an examination of the Tales in relation to that system enriches their meaning and adds to one's appreciation of Chaucer as an artist.
