Wakefield And Soureby: Manor And Village In The Reign Of Edward The First, Robert Allan Figge Dec 1952

Wakefield And Soureby: Manor And Village In The Reign Of Edward The First, Robert Allan Figge

History ETDs

It is the purpose of this study to investigate the core of manorial life, a single manor, in order to reconstruct the type of life existent there. For this purpose the manor of Wakefield in Yorkshire, England, has been chosen. As a further limiting factor this study will inquire into Wakefield life in the reign of a single king, Edward I, 1272-1307. It is hoped by this effort that life in Wakefield may be caught in a photograph, before it has a chance to vary its characteristics and customs to any great degree.

Obligados Y Ofendidos By Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla, Patricia Petersen

Therefore, the present text of Obligados y ofendidos is intended for use by students of Spanish on the high school or college level normally prepared to read the language.

The Dualism Of Shelley's Adonais, Lucille C. Kaul Aug 1952

The Dualism Of Shelley's Adonais, Lucille C. Kaul

English Language and Literature ETDs

Adonais, the elegy on Keats, is regarded by common consent as one of Shelley's two or three greatest poems and one of the greatest elegies in the English language. This current estimate approximates, if it does not confirm, the self judgement of a writer who by 1840 'had been clearly recognized as one of England's half-dozen greatest poets.'

Henry James' View Of Evil In His Writings From 1888-1899, Adrienne R. Wilda Jul 1952

Henry James' View Of Evil In His Writings From 1888-1899, Adrienne R. Wilda

English Language and Literature ETDs

This thesis springs from an interest in Henry James' exploration of the situations which face his characters and of the responses which his characters make to those situations. Viewing the situations, one sees that in general two possibilities may result: The character concerned may go on to a fuller development of his spiritual qualities, or he may become keyed to a value much lower than his spiritual capacity. In either case the ultimate responsibility for the individual's action or attitude rests with himself.

The Political Influence Of Señora María Eva Duarte De Perón, Richard R. Renner Jul 1952

The Political Influence Of Señora María Eva Duarte De Perón, Richard R. Renner

Latin American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to present something of the recent political influence of the wife of the president of Argentina, Señora María Eva Duarte de Perón. For this purpose political influence is defined as any activity with results that cause a reaction from others so that social and economic relationships are somewhat altered. This change may be slight; it may be a shift in attitude or a rejection of coercive pressure; it may only be an acknowledgement that such personal influence exists. Yet this knowledge in itself may result in a type of secondary political control limiting and …

The Comic Art Of Don Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla In His Comedies Of Customs, Maryavis Parson Jul 1952

The Comic Art Of Don Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla In His Comedies Of Customs, Maryavis Parson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

From the preceding discussion it may be seen that Rojas is worthy of consideration with the rest of the dramatists of Spain. However it becomes apparent that while recognizing his importance, critics have not analyzed in detail his works in their entirety. For this reason the problem arises as to what justifies Rojas' position among six foremost Golden Age dramatists. After examining the different opinions of the above-mentioned critics, we find that invariably any adverse criticism of his talent is of his love for the bizarre and the extravagant both in language and in situation or in problems. Martinez de …

A History Of Miracles In New Mexico, Annette Nichols Jun 1952

A History Of Miracles In New Mexico, Annette Nichols

History ETDs

The intention of this study is to demonstrate the nature of miracles in New Mexico&mdashtheir social significances as related to the cultural background.

Questions of importance are: What is a miracle? Do miracles actually occur? How can the existence of such miraculous intervention be proved? None of these queries can be answered positively, except insofar as they exist in the minds and religions of those who believe in them. Objectively, the social activities of believers is evidenced in their beliefs. Miracles are part of the social customs and institutions. Whatever substantiation of a miracle there is must rest with the …

Two Legs To Stand On, John D. Mckee Jun 1952

Two Legs To Stand On, John D. Mckee

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to present in autobiographical form some of the problems of the cerebral palsied and my own solutions to those problems. I have attempted to present the psychological and social implications of cerebral palsy as they apply to myself and, by extension, as they apply to anyone who is under a handicap. I have not attempted to write a strictly chronological autobiography. Rather, I have attempted to make of each chapter a dramatic unit, using a problem or achievement as the central theme for each chapter and ranging forward and backward in time as the …

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy Jun 1952

The Role Of Art In The Complete Development Of A Christian Personality, Sister Loretta Ann Mccarthy

Art & Art History ETDs

A survey of ancient literature reveals that art as an area in school life is becoming increasingly recognized as tremendously significant to a complete participation in the creative activities of life. A critical point has been reached in so far as art has begun to be recognized as an integral part of the school program rather than an educational frill offered for those students who have difficulty with the academic program or as a concession to the few talented students.

It is the purpose of this study (1) to outline briefly the theory of art education as applied to the …

The Raid By Moncada: A Prelude To The Sack Of Rome, Florentino Garza May 1952

The Raid By Moncada: A Prelude To The Sack Of Rome, Florentino Garza

History ETDs

On the twentieth of September, 1524, Hugo de Moncada, a general of the Holy Roman Empire, launched a surprise attack upon the Sacred City of Rome. The assault was an important episode in a rivalry that had dominated the European scene during the early part of the sixteenth century--that of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V, and "The Most Christian King," Francis I. The success or failure of the attack was bound to be important to all of Europe, yet the most significant outcome was unforeseen and had the most far-reaching consequences. The success of Moncada symbolized the downfall of …

Dying Into Life: A Study In The History Of Christian Humility, Pierce Johnson May 1952

Dying Into Life: A Study In The History Of Christian Humility, Pierce Johnson

History ETDs

In this study three of the most prominent Christian types will be presented: the apostle, the monk, and the mystic. They will be taken up in the order of their appearance in Christian history, and each one will be represented by a single historical figure. The reasons for choosing these three types may be largely personal. They are especially well-suited for bringing out what seem to me to be the most important insights into the Christian experience.

The Pan Americanism Of Joaquim Nabuco, Robert Gordon B. Kenyon May 1952

The Pan Americanism Of Joaquim Nabuco, Robert Gordon B. Kenyon

History ETDs

Pan Americanism, or mutual understanding and co-operation between the various American countries, can be traced to the sympathy of the United States for the Spanish colonies in their struggles for independence. Since then Pan Americanism has been advanced as an international policy set up by statesman from both North and South America. With the exception of the Monroe Doctrine, none of these attempts was of lasting or great import until the establishment of the Pan American Union in 1889, at the First International American Conference, in Washington. The Second International Conference, in Mexico City in 1901-1902, was relatively ineffective. Joaquim …

Kingston-Upon-Hull To The End Of The Reign Of Edward Ii, Floyd W. Snyder May 1952

Kingston-Upon-Hull To The End Of The Reign Of Edward Ii, Floyd W. Snyder

History ETDs

The major objective of this research monograph is to study the development of Hull during the reigns of Edward I and Edward II, between the years 1272 and 1327. These are probably the most important years in the growth of Hull in the medieval period. They were the formative years of the port's development, and their span saw Hull grow to become one of the great ports of England. Some of the problems encountered in this study, however, did not permit it to be confined entirely to the reigns of the two Edwards. The story of the foundation of Hull, …

John W. Forney, The Washington Chronicle, And The Civil War Era, James Leroy Oxford May 1952

John W. Forney, The Washington Chronicle, And The Civil War Era, James Leroy Oxford

History ETDs

This dissertation follows the party battles of a political journalist, John W. Forney, through the Civil War era. More specifically, it explains how such a politician with winning personality and few scruples was able to gain favor and power. It traces his influence on ante-bellum factional and party alignments, especially in the Democratic party. The main emphasis, however, is upon the techniques of Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet members in their efforts to guide an important newspaper organ, Forney's Washington Chronicle. But such influence was reciprocated, and Forney's efforts to compel and wheedle advantages from the President and other members …

Speech Characteristics Of The Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, Donald I. Dickinson

The purpose of this study is to show characteristics of the speech of the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico. It is hoped that the material will be suitable for inclusion in a future Linguistic Atlas of the U.S. and Canada. The Novels Of James T. Farrell; A Study In Social Forces And The Individual, Maurice M. Rosenthal May 1952

The Novels Of James T. Farrell; A Study In Social Forces And The Individual, Maurice M. Rosenthal

English Language and Literature ETDs

In any study of the works of James T. Farrell one is impressed by the author's relentless attack on man's traditional institutions and his furious loathing of the barren waste of life that characterizes certain strata of society. In a very real sense Mr. Farrell is exorcising the evil spirits of his blighted youth in southside Chicago, but in a more significant respect he is doing penance for us all. "Here," he seems to say to society, "is your bastard spawn. What will you do with it?"

Mr. Farrell, however, is no crusader. He considers his mission only that of …

The Novels Of Harold Frederic, George A. Small May 1952

The Novels Of Harold Frederic, George A. Small

English Language and Literature ETDs

I do not intend to defend the obviously untenable thesis that Frederic was a great writer and is not appreciated because of the nature of his subject matter. The author of The Damnation of Theron Ware seldom shows any sign of genius. What Frederic does, and often in a rather workmanlike manner, is tell a story of small-town and country people in upper New York state. In his early works, Seth's Brother's Wife and The Lawton Girl, the author writes about things he knows and has done. The works written about the same time as the two mentioned have …

A Study Of The Use Of The Subjunctive Mood In The Poema De Mio Cid, Etta Creecy Goff May 1952

A Study Of The Use Of The Subjunctive Mood In The Poema De Mio Cid, Etta Creecy Goff

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The study of the use of the subjunctive in the Poema de Mio Cid is more complex than might be anticipated at the outset. As it is true in most languages, the subjunctive was used much more widely in the writing of such an early date than in modern Spanish. Many of the constructions employed in the poem are common in the language of today, but some have passed from current usage. Some of the interesting aspects of the problem are the use of the -ra form, the great frequency of the use of the future subjunctive, the use of …

Los Cruzados De La Causa By Ramón De Valle Inclán, Shirley Lee Zabel May 1952

Los Cruzados De La Causa By Ramón De Valle Inclán, Shirley Lee Zabel

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

It always seems wise to review the life of a great author before attempting to analyze his work. However, the usual listing of important dates in the author's life, places of residence, travels, positions held, schooling, and circumstances of death, does not capture the true relationship between the personality of the man and his creative works. This is especially true in the case of don Ramón del Valle Iclán, whose strong personality eludes the student in a generalized factual description of his life. He was born of noble family Galicia in 1866, studied three years of law, lived a Bohemian …
