Care Of Quilts-Cleaning , Shirley Niemeyer, Patricia Cox Crews Jun 2002

Care Of Quilts-Cleaning , Shirley Niemeyer, Patricia Cox Crews

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Quilts need special care in cleaning, but even professionals don't always agree on the best methods for cleaning quilts or even whether it should be done. No two quilts are alike. Methods suited for cleaning one quilt may not be best for another. The fiber content, dyes, and construction make each one unique. Sometimes it may be advisable to clean a quilt. Usually it is best to leave it as is.

Deciding whether to clean a quilt involves careful thought. What is the fiber content? How is the quilt constructed? Can it withstand movement or agitation? Will the colors bleed …

Sir William Berkeley's Discourse And View Of Virginia: A Note On Its Authorship, Warren M. Billings Jun 2002

Sir William Berkeley's Discourse And View Of Virginia: A Note On Its Authorship, Warren M. Billings

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677), long-time governor of Virginia is known to history mainly for his part in Bacon's Rebellion, an episode that forever stained an otherwise noteworthy reputation. Of a West Country family, he took degrees at the University of Oxford before making a tour of the Continent and finding a place at the court of Charles I. He remained a courtier until lack of advancement led him to seek a fresh start somewhere else, and he used his connections to win appointment as governor of Virginia in 1641. Save for the eight years of the Interregnum (1652-1660), he was …

A Note On The Text Of Lincoln's Second Inaugural, Douglas L. Wilson Jun 2002

A Note On The Text Of Lincoln's Second Inaugural, Douglas L. Wilson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address is perhaps as familiar and frequently read as any text in American English. Engraved in stone on the North wall of the Lincoln Memorial in 701 words, it is a text that many of Lincoln's countrymen can recite from memory and has often been called "greatest speech." For the other leading candidate for that honor, the Gettysburg Address, there are five known copies in Lincoln's handwriting, none of which is exactly the same. It is said to be a restful day in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress when no one turns up …

Building With Lincoln Logs Transforming The Lincoln Legal Papers, Daniel W. Stowell

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The challenges of the past two and one-half years for the staff of the Lincoln Legal Papers have been daunting. First, we had to take a successful project through the transition from one director to another and from one form of publication to another. Then, in quick succession, we began a larger initiative-the Papers of Abraham Lincoln-of which the Lincoln Legal Papers became a part.

The Lincoln Legal Papers began in 1985 as a five-year project to locate and edit the surviving documentation from Abraham Lincoln's legal career. Fifteen years later, the University of Illinois Press published a comprehensive electronic …

Dear Carlo, Dear Langston: An Epistolary Friendship: Review Of Rememher Me To Harlem: The Letters Of Langston Hughes And Carl Van Vechten. Edited By Emily Bernard, Christopher C. De Santis

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

A good deal of scholarship over the past thirty years has been devoted to Hughes's life and writings, particularly to his poetry and fiction and to his status as one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. In time for his hundredth birthday in 2002, the University of Missouri Press is completing publication of The Collected works of Langston Hughes, a seventeen-volume collection that will ensure wide access to most of Hughes's writings for generations to come. Nevertheless, there is one genre in Hughes's vast oeuvre-the personal letter-that has gone largely unnoticed. Hughes was an avid letter writer, generating …

Head Of A Jester, Gregory Davies, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Bite your tongue, or is it your lip? That is precisely what the fool, or jester, in the Large Head of a Jester (figure 89) is actively engaged in doing as he looks out in the direction of the viewer. A gift of the Trier-Fodor Foundation, this anonymous, German engraving of c. 1600 was acquired by the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, in 1985. Image and text of this medium-sized print measure 360 x 277 mm; the sheet 402 x 312 mm. The laid paper bears a watermark of a shield incorporating a fat fleur-de-lys, or possibly a clover leaf. …

A prolific Irish Catholic family, only two generations old in America, is ruled by a stern patriarch who dedicates his sizable fortune (earned through a traffic of questionable ethics) to furthering his dynastic ambitions for a son who subsequently becomes a United States Senator from a state that begins with the letter "M" .... If you thought you knew where this was going, think again. The father/son team in question is Charles Carroll of Annapolis and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, who-to adopt only one of the several useful editorial devices utilized in Dear Papa, Dear Charleywill be referred to hereafter …

Nalo Hopkinson, Gregory E. Rutledge May 2002

Nalo Hopkinson, Gregory E. Rutledge

Department of English: Faculty Publications

For fans of science fiction and fantasy who have sought and craved non-White voices, characters, and perspectives, the small number of Black writers in these literary genres have provided them few options from which to choose. Though forty years have expired since the first Black science fiction novelist appeared, a dearth of Black science fiction and fantasy writers still prevails, and no hard science fiction writers are Black. Nevertheless, recent developments have excited Black speculative fiction and fantasy enthusiasts about the prospects for the fiction of the new millennium to reach into the future and, just as importantly, grapple with …

Dispatches From Lincoln’S White House: The Anonymous Civil War Journalism Of Presidential Secretary William O. Stoddard, William O. Stoddard May 2002

Dispatches From Lincoln’S White House: The Anonymous Civil War Journalism Of Presidential Secretary William O. Stoddard, William O. Stoddard

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

William O. Stoddard's memoirs as President Abraham Lincoln's third secretary reveal a perspective of the president rarely viewed. In this collection of 120 weekly dispatches submitted to the New York Examiner under the pseudonym "Illinois," Stoddard sheds new light on Lincoln and his era.

These documents provide commentary on Lincoln's personal circumstances as well as events in Washington and on military, diplomatic, economic, and political developments. Although historians at times differ with Stoddard's accounts, he offers valuable descriptions of Lincoln, insight into the president's thoughts, and commentary on contemporary opinion.

A Literary And Field Guide To The Trees In Willa Cather’S Nebraska Novels, Linnea M. Fredrickson May 2002

A Literary And Field Guide To The Trees In Willa Cather’S Nebraska Novels, Linnea M. Fredrickson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Willa Cather, one of America’s foremost novelists and short-story writers, was deeply interested in and profoundly affected by the places she lived and encountered. One small aspect of her knowledge of places was familiarity with the trees of the locale. A number of influences during her youth gave her the gift of tree awareness: a great-grandfather who was a forest conservationist, a home in the northern Virginia mixed-deciduous forest that was named for its prominent trees, perhaps the sound of her own first name, the wrenching contrast of a move to the nearly treeless mixed-grass prairie of Nebraska when she …

Review Of Conspiracy (Bbc/Hbo Films), Directed By Frank Pierson From A Script By Loring Mandel, Alan E. Steinweis Apr 2002

Review Of Conspiracy (Bbc/Hbo Films), Directed By Frank Pierson From A Script By Loring Mandel, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Conspiracy is a docudrama about the infamous Wannsee Conference of January 20, 1942, at which Nazi officials discussed implementation of the "Final Solution." Chaired by Reinhard Heydrich, head of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), the meeting brought together a dozen representatives from state and party agencies involved in the genocide of Europe's Jews. The notoriety of the meeting stems in large part from the fact that a summary of the proceedings- the so-called Wannsee Protokoll authored by Adolf Eichmann, who was also present-survived the war. Historians have used the document to implicate a broad spectrum of German bureaucracies in …

Marivaux's Comedy Of Loss: La Double Inconstance, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Apr 2002

Marivaux's Comedy Of Loss: La Double Inconstance, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Marivaux's treatment of losing love in one of his favorite plays, La Double Inconstance (1723), is a double tour de force. Not content to show that grieving or offering sympathy for lost love can be intimately tied to the awakening to love that is at the center of his theater, he also turns them to comic advantage. The classic accounts of the role of sensibility in Marivaux, such as Ruth Jamieson's, have pointed out how love strains against pride in his plays as lovers summon amour-propre to resist acknowledging that they are in love (97,105) and noted the comic …

Le Palimpseste Et Le Roman Africain: Le Cas Des Romans Xala De Sembène Ousmane Et La Grève Des Bàttu D’Aminata Sow Fall, Marie-Chantal Kalisa Mar 2002

Le Palimpseste Et Le Roman Africain: Le Cas Des Romans Xala De Sembène Ousmane Et La Grève Des Bàttu D’Aminata Sow Fall, Marie-Chantal Kalisa

Small Hands, Sos! : Circumventing Injury And Succeeding At The Piano, Brenda Wristen, Lora Deahl

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Conference Presentations

Recommendations: Detach notes as needed—join with pedal. Release bass and inner voices early as needed. Insert dynamic fluctuations within a long fortissimo passage. Maximize the bass through long pedals. Use stronger fingers. Supplement action of the fingers with a forward and upward motion of the forearm. Use the thumb and fifth finger exclusively for octave passages. Omit notes from successive large chords. Use staccato touch for selected notes in arpeggio. Keep hand compact. Use “rebounding” motion. Insert moment of rest between every chord. Use the damper pedal to create a legato sound. Keep the hand pliable. Control shape and size …

Clara True And Female Moral Authority, Margaret D. Jacobs Mar 2002

Clara True And Female Moral Authority, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Clara True's professional career speaks to the cross-cultural tensions that existed in Euramerican women's search for power in a time of masculine privilege and the sex-typed division of labor. The participation of women in waged labor and politics ran against the dictates of the prescriptive "true womanhood" and seemed to support the neo-Turnerian argument that the West was a place of cultural change and new departures. But women such as True also found themselves co-opted into the Victorian gender ideology; what was familiar in the East was replicated in the West. Their attempts to "uplift" Native American women and men--through …

Johannes Buxtorf Westphalus Und Die Erforschung Des Judentums In Der Neuzeit, Stephen G. Burnett Mar 2002

Johannes Buxtorf Westphalus Und Die Erforschung Des Judentums In Der Neuzeit, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Scholarly Editing And The Relationship Between The United States And Europe: Recent Developments In The Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (Mega), Malcolm Sylvers Mar 2002

Scholarly Editing And The Relationship Between The United States And Europe: Recent Developments In The Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (Mega), Malcolm Sylvers

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The present-day MEGA, which began in the early 1970's, was a second attempt at a complete edition. The first one, in the Soviet Union in the 1920's and 1930's, did not get very far primarily because many collaborators fell victim to repression by Stalin. When it was again begun, the MEGA was intended as an exclusive production of the two IMLs, although two-thirds of the manuscripts of Marx and Engels were at the IISG in Amsterdam In fact, if both the host governments were at first somewhat hesitant, this was not only because of the enormous costs involved but also …
