Race, Culture, And Strategies For Success Of Female Public School Administrators, Marie Byrd-Blake
Race, Culture, And Strategies For Success Of Female Public School Administrators, Marie Byrd-Blake
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose for conducting this study was to examine the differences among African American, Hispanic, and white female public school administrators with respect to their perceptions of successful strategies that led to career advancement. Female public school administrators continue to experience barriers to career advancement. The data revealed that Hispanic females perceived themselves as more successful in utilizing more strategies than African American and white females. Few females reported utilizing the informal mentoring technique of forming "new girl networks."

A Long History Of Scholarship, Marilyn L. Grady, Barbara Lacost
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The Journal of Women in Educational Leadership is an early mark in the 21 st century timeline and lengthens the chronological chart of women in history. In this issue, Mertz' longitudinal study of scholarship about women is extended, and Byrd-Blake offers perceptions of African American, Hispanic and white females concerning the strategies that enhance career advancement. Rhodes provides profiles of two women community college presidents and the lessons these women offer others considering the role. White, Martin & Johnson examine gender, professional orientation, and student achievement in their study of 100 school principals.
Gender, Professional Orientation, And Student Achievement: Elements Of School Culture, Teresa White, Barbara N. Martin, Judy A. Johnson
Gender, Professional Orientation, And Student Achievement: Elements Of School Culture, Teresa White, Barbara N. Martin, Judy A. Johnson
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This study explored the relationships between professional orientation (defined as how the principal sees his or her role in the organization) and school culture, the influence of gender on professional orientation, and the relationship between school culture and the academic achievement of students. One hundred principals were surveyed. Two instruments, the Professional Orientation and the School Culture Survey were completed. The results were analyzed using linear regression statistics to determine (a) gender and professional orientation effect on the factors of school culture, and (b) if factors of school culture had an effect on student success in the elementary school. Findings …

Review Of Forming The Collective Mind: A Contextual Exploration Of Large-Scale Collaborative Writing In Industry, By Geoffrey A. Cross., Barbara Couture
Department of English: Faculty Publications
We have come a long way in studies of writers in professional settings, learning with each exploration how these behaviors differ from and relate to the processes we have taught beginning writers in our classroom. Studies of these processes have become increasingly more sophisticated since Selzer (1983) treated researchers to his intriguing account of a technical writer’s composing processes. Next, we saw case studies of writers designed to produce real-world writing contexts for students—such as Cases for Technical and Professional Writing, which I coauthored with Rymer Goldstein (1985)—and then more detailed descriptions of how writers learn to become proficient communicators …

The Editor's Responsibility, John P. Kaminski
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
What is done during this time? Generally speaking project directors on documentary editions spend less time in editing documents than do the other editors on the staff. Senior editors are forced to devote varying amounts of their time to administration, fund-raising, and different kinds of public relations. If an editor also teaches, those responsibilities take up time: preparation of lectures, classroom time, consultations with students, and reading, critiquing, and grading papers. Editors also have other responsibilities such as committee work, responding to inquiries, consulting with other projects and individuals, assisting the federal funding agencies in reviewing proposals and projects, cartographic …

Adolescent Journals Of Caroline Healey Daii, Helen R. Deese
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Caroline Healey Dall (1822-1912), Boston-born reformer, lecturer, author of books, freelance journalist, memoirist, and occasional preacher, began her apprenticeship as a writer at the age of nine with the keeping of a journal. While still a child, however, she destroyed her earliest journal when she discovered her father reading it. For some time thereafter, she ceased her journal keeping. But soon finding herself unable to quell the need to express herself on paper, she resumed the habit. The journals of this second period, which ran for several years, survived until Dall was in her seventies. Then she also destroyed them, …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
If Documentary Editing were a grown child celebrating its 25th birthday, its parents, concerned with their offspring's professional welfare and future, would remember fondly earlier times and might well ask questions about plans for life after graduate school. Clearly, the journal of the Association for Documentary Editing is different from a child, although, over the years, many people have left their imprint on Documentary Editing and much has changed since the publication's beginning in 1979. Unlike an adult on the verge of complete emersion into professional life, however, Documentary Editing cannot look back and reflect on the course of the …
Review Of Greek And Roman Actors: Aspects Of An Ancient Profession, Edited By Pat Easterling And Edith Hall., Anne Duncan
Review Of Greek And Roman Actors: Aspects Of An Ancient Profession, Edited By Pat Easterling And Edith Hall., Anne Duncan
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
This is an excellent collection of essays, and an important one for anyone interested in performance, theater history, literature, cultural studies, gender, and a host of other fields. Ancient actors, as real individuals who engaged professionally with literary texts, provide a point of interdisciplinary contact between literature and history, as well as novel avenues of approach into archaeology, epigraphy, rhetoric, philosophy, textual criticism, and other subfields of Classics. The twenty essays in this volume stretch from Classical Greece to the Byzantine era and beyond, and cover a wide range of evidence and methodologies. They are divided into three groups: The …

Review Of Perspectives On American Book History: Artifacts And Commentary, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Perhaps the best place to begin a review of this excellent new book is where the editors themselves begin in their preface, by defining what the book is not. Namely, it is not "a reader that merely reprint[s] scholarly essays" on the history of the book (that niche has recently been filled by The Book History Reader [2002] from Routledge), nor is it "a definitive history of the book and print culture in North America" (Cambridge University Press and the American Antiquarian Society aim to fill that niche with the multi-volume History of the Book in America, currently in …
Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
Refining The Metaphor In Lessing's "Erziehung Des Menschengeschlechts", Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
German Language and Literature Papers
Lessing's Erziehung des Menschengeschlechts (EdM) first appeared, albeit in incomplete form, appended to the fourth of Lessing's Gegensätze zu Reimarus in 1777. It constitutes part of Lessing's response to the rationalistic polemic Lessing's "Ungenannter," Hermann Samuel Reimarus, directed against many of the fundamental dogmas of orthodox Christianity, and seeks to define a position which preserves the authority of reason, while at the same time defining a legitimate historical role for revealed religion. I wish to investigate here the hermeneutical model Lessing puts forward in the EdM in the context of his response to Reimarus. We will see that while Lessing …

Avatares Del Proceso De La Institucionalización De La Literatura En Chile En Las Revistas Literarias Del Siglo Xix, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Riddle: What’s the difference between Lincoln, Nebraska and Paris, France?
1 In Paris, you're can skate in the streets!
2 If you see police on rollerskates in Lincoln, you're dreaming!
3 The Louvre is in Paris, and the whole block north of it is an asphalt plaza open to skating every night of the summer.
4 In Paris every Friday night at 10, a river of skaters floods through a 20-25K course, leaving the occasional misplaced motorist cowering by the curb.

North Country Stories: Written And Oral Texts Of A Family History, Susan E. Gray
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Because the diaries that brought me to Camp Edit were those of a husband and a wife, I understood from the beginning the essential multi-vocality of my project. But I had no idea that what I then ,envisioned as a dialogue for me to orchestrate between the Reverend George Nelson Smith and his wife, Arvilla Powers Smith, would become a lively, sometimes heated, multi-generational family conversation where we are a privileged audience. Nor could I have known that the written texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries would be joined by other records, including oral ones from the present. …

Her education is the same as that of a man ... she is able to unfold and exercise her mental powers and faculties. She chooses her occupation in such a way as corresponds with her wishes, inclinations and natural abilities, and she works under conditions identical with man's. Even if engaged as a practical working woman on some field or other, at other times of the day she may be educator, teacher, or nurse, as yet others she may exercise herself in art, or cultivate some branch of science, and yet others may be filling some demonstrative function. She joins …

Review Of Women In Higher Education An Encyclopedia. Ana M. Martinez Aleman And Kristen A. Renn, Editors., Jean M. Haar
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Women have constituted a majority of students in American colleges and universities since 1979. Women earned more than half of all associates, bachelors and masters degrees and more than one-third of all doctorates (Touchton & Davis, 1991). Even with these numbers, the study of women in higher education has often been overlooked (Glazer, Bensimon, & Townsend, 1993). Women in Higher Education: An Encyclopedia atones for overlooking "almost entirely women's role as shapers and interpreters of the academy" (Glazer et al., p. ix). The editors have created a comprehensive source of information and resources related to women in higher education in …

Emerging From The Academic Pipeline: Senior Women Faculty Members, Florence A. Hamrick
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Twenty-six women with professor rank at a large, public, research extensive university were interviewed for this study in which respondents discussed the meanings and significance associated with full professorship. Major themes included: the promotion event and the accompanying title of professor, anticipated and actual changes in their status and working conditions, and their identities, goals, and contributions as professors. Conclusions address issues such as dilemmas of senior professorship, effective participation in institutional governance, and progress of women through the faculty ranks.
