Annual Report 2005, Kathleen Adams Jan 2006

Annual Report 2005, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Our year began uneventfully with the AGM held for the first time at the Heritage Centre with the added advantage of easy and free parking and the opportunity to provide refreshments. There were no changes to the Fellowship Council or to the officers. The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor John Gazey, had suggested that there should be a literary lunch in Coventry to celebrate George Eliot and this took place on 16 April. We had worked with the Mayor's secretary in making all the arrangements but the first disappointment was that, on arrival at the splendid St Mary's Guildhall, the …

Presidential Address--A Salute, Roger Bruns

I have enjoyed the presidency. It has been exhilarating. I especially loved the trips around the country in the Association's airplane-ADE One. This whole thing about being president has been heady. Of course there have been the lows. My job approval rating, for example-it is still around 8%. That hurts. At least ADE did not invade Iraq!

Chronicling The Early Court: A Look Back At Project's End, Robert P. Frankel Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

As I speak here today, the end is definitely near for The Documentary History of the Supreme Court We have sent back the page proofs for the eighth and final volume and are now scurrying to complete the index. On 31 December, the project will officially go out of business. Of course, it would be difficult to claim that we have rushed these volumes into print. The project began in 1977. People invariably will say: "You are telling me that it has taken thirty years for you to do a history of just the first ten years of the Court." …

Esther Katz, PhD, editor and director of New York University's Margaret Sanger Papers Project (MSPP), plans four volumes in this series, with MS's activities in the international birth control movement to appear in Volume Four. Ade Treasurer's Report, Fiscal Year, September 1, 2005-August 31, 2006

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing have improved over the last year. This year, we had an increase of $6,438 in the general budget, giving us unrestricted assets of nearly $61,000. This increase was a nice change from three consecutive years of minor deficit spending. The increase can be attributed to several things: first, there were approximately forty more dues-paying members this year; second, the dues increase was in effect for the entire year; third, interest rates more than doubled from the previous year; and finally, several of the expenditures were much less than budgeted. While the addition …

Book Review: Viet Cong At Wounded Knee: The Trail Of A Blackfeet Activist, Tom Holm Jan 2006

Book Review: Viet Cong At Wounded Knee: The Trail Of A Blackfeet Activist, Tom Holm

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Woody Kipp's life story is a reflection of a new generation of Native writers and activists. His autobiography has nothing to do with trying to save the white world from itself or to explain Indians to a curious and perhaps even sympathetic white audience. The white world literally and figuratively took aim at Woody Kipp (and a number of other American Indian Vietnam veterans) for daring to oppose the injustices he saw in Indian life. He became, as the title of his book indicates, the then-current enemy of the American state. He was, ironically, a domestic version of the Viet …

Learning By Editing A Scholarly Journal, Florence A. Hamrick

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

After serving two three-year terms as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of College Student Development, I was nominated by a colleague for the position of editor that was to become vacant the following year. Had this colleague not nominated me, I am confident I would not have nominated myself. Accordingly, I would have missed out on a set of significant learning experiences that have taught me a great deal thus far about journal editing, about leadership and professionalism, and about myself. It seems somewhat premature writing about these experiences and working conclusions, much less offering this …

Women In History--Grace Abbott: A Leader In Social Reform, Shari Cole Hoffman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

One of the earlier 20th century American women leaders in Progressivism was Grace Abbott who led the way so others might be the voices for those unheard. Abbott's heritage influenced her lifetime commitment to social improvement. She was born on November 17, 1878 in Grand Island, Nebraska into a family of activists. Her Quaker mother, Elizabeth Griffin Abbott, came from an abolitionist family and participated in the Underground Railroad. Elizabeth was also actively involved in the women's suffrage movement and often hosted suffrage meetings and events in her home. Susan B. Anthony frequently stayed with the Abbotts when visiting Grand …

Where Are The Women In School Administration? Issues Of Access, Acculturation, Advancement, Advocacy, Dianne L. Hoff, Catherine Menard, Jeanna Tuell

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Despite widespread alarms about a growing shortage of school leaders, an obvious source of well-prepared talent continues to be overlooked. Women are still under-represented in school administration, particularly at the highest levels of responsibility. This paper presents findings of a study that examined issues for women in accessing administrative positions, acculturating into the organization, advancing on the hierarchical ladder, and advocating for other women who may follow. The results suggest that the administrative profession, including women themselves, would benefit from a more sophisticated understanding of the gender biases that still persist to keep women on the operational and cultural margins …

Teacher Ratings Of Principal Applicants: The Significance Of Gender And Leadership Style, Deborah Burdick, Arnold Danzig Jan 2006

Teacher Ratings Of Principal Applicants: The Significance Of Gender And Leadership Style, Deborah Burdick, Arnold Danzig

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This paper focuses on the results of a study examing the relationship among gender, leadership style and principal selection. A sample of 64 Arizona elementary teachers participated in the study. Key issues related to gender and leadership style were identified through a literature review, teacher ratings of four fictitious principals, coded comments, and survey results. Independent samples t tests on mean ratings were used to determine statistical significance. Teachers selected principals based on leadership style rather than gender; reform principal applicants were rated significantly higher than traditional principal applicants by all teacher respondents. Although not statistically significant, gender was associated …

First Things First--Write-Rewrite, Marilyn L. Grady Jan 2006

First Things First--Write-Rewrite, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The first demand of writing productivity is to create the First Draft. One unproductive diversionary activity is to attempt to perfect your writing "too early." It is more efficient to keep writing and get the initial draft completed before editing a manuscript. Early editing can be demoralizing and derail writing momentum and flow. It is better to forge ahead and continue to add to the manuscript until the complete paper has been prepared. Only when the first draft is completed should the serious work of revision begin.

Women Engineering Faculty: Expanding The Pipeline, Nadene Deiterman Greni

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The purpose for this case study was to explore the features of undergraduate engineering departmental and college support that influenced the persistence of women students. Women engineering faculty members were among the participants at three Land Grant universities in the Midwest. The data revealed the theme, Expanding the Pipeline, and demonstrated how women engineering faculty perceived their role in helping to encourage women students to persist in engineering majors.

“Plain Broad Narratives Of Substantial Facts”: Credibility, Narrative, And Hakluyt’S Principall Navigations, Julia Schleck Jan 2006

“Plain Broad Narratives Of Substantial Facts”: Credibility, Narrative, And Hakluyt’S Principall Navigations, Julia Schleck

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This article compares voyage narratives printed in Richard Hakluyt’s 1589 Principall Navigations to contemporaneous travel histories in an effort to contextualize the epistemological status of each group of texts and debunk the former’s reputation for greater factuality. It critiques the use commonly made of Hakluyt’s narratives in literary studies, arguing that the privileging of these texts over other sources results in postcolonial studies that ironically valorize a type of writing which promoted the colonial mindset these studies seek to expose.

The Blackfriars Gladiators: Masters Of Fence, Playing A Prize, And The Elizabethan And Stuart Theater, Ian Borden Jan 2006

The Blackfriars Gladiators: Masters Of Fence, Playing A Prize, And The Elizabethan And Stuart Theater, Ian Borden

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Attempting to determine the nature of staged combat during the Elizabethan and Stuart periods is a difficult venture, for very few descriptions of stage fighting exist. Most plays from these periods, even when a moment of combat is central to the plot, simply describe swordplay as "They fight." Yet dueling was common to the theatrical venues of the day, not just in period drama, but also in contests between skilled professional fencers and instructors called Masters of Fence or Masters of Defence. Known as "playing a prize," or "prize fighting," competitions between these masters attracted substantial crowds. Beginning as amateur, …

Review Of The Longing For Myth In Germany By George S. Williamson., William Grange Jan 2006

Review Of The Longing For Myth In Germany By George S. Williamson., William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Williamson has written a superb work of scholarship, examining trends in German cultural thought from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the death of Nietzsche in 1900. He has also provided an insightful Epilogue, recapitulating what preceded in the body of his book and extrapolating on the longing for myth into the twentieth century. The book’s greatest value lies in the background Williamson provides for the best known (to English-speaking readers, at least) manifestations of myth in both aesthetic and intellectual life, specifically in the work of Wagner and Nietzsche.

Rulfo En Donoso: Comala Y El Olivo Como Espacios Infernales, Iker González-Allende

El Mar Y La Pared: El Exilio Histórico Frente Al Exilio Existencial En La Poesía Final De Ernestina De Champourcin, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Textiles From The Canadian Front, J. Penney Burton Jan 2006

Textiles From The Canadian Front, J. Penney Burton

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The craft of storytelling has all but disappeared from the Western cultural context, and there remain few peoples for whom oral traditions are still a prominent part of their everyday lives. Fiber artists and their work are frequently discussed by craft historians, critics, curators and connoisseurs, but aside from infrequent interviews in monographs and craft journals, their own voices are rarely heard. This is being somewhat addressed with the practice of conducting oral history interviews with leaders in the craft and textile field in the US, through the Smithsonian Institute, with the Nanette L. Laitman Project for Craft and the …
