In The Beginning: Ade And The Big Bang Revolution, Roger Burns Jan 2009

In The Beginning: Ade And The Big Bang Revolution, Roger Burns

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Welcome to the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the Association for Documentary Editing. Some people have compared the origins of the ADE with the American Revolution. Others have linked it to the big bang theory. I prefer to think of it as a Big Bang Revolution. Anyway, today you will get a little of the inside story of the creation of ADE. You see, I was there. And with me today are three individuals who have joined the ADE at different times in its history. Charlene Bickford, editor of the First Congress Project, who was also …

Digital Editions: Scholarly Tradition In An Avant-Garde Medium, Andrew Jewell Jan 2009

Digital Editions: Scholarly Tradition In An Avant-Garde Medium, Andrew Jewell

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I come to you from the digital world. I am president of the Digital Americanists; I recently received a Digital Humanities Start-Up grant; I edit a digital archive on the life and work of Willa Cather; I am a faculty fellow at the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities; and I even have the word “digital” in my official job title: Assistant Professor of Digital Projects. I don’t begin this way in order to impress you with my credentials, but as a confession: my current professional identity is absolutely entangled with the digital medium. That said, I want to …

President’S Letter 2009 : Documentary Editing Is Alive And Well, Cathy Moran Hajo

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

As experienced editors, we sometimes see change as a negative—complaining about the paucity of funding, or about the new requirements that digital publishing has forced on our projects. But when you meet so many enthusiastic newcomers, it is hard to remain a pessimist. We have made great strides in the last thirty years, bringing our editions to a far broader segment of the public than the founders of ADE had ever thought possible. We have honed our practices, paving the way for new editors to follow using our publications in microfilm, book, and digital format as examples of best practices, a massive …

A Bibliography Of Editions Prepared By Ade Members, Karen Mylan, Linnéa Caproni, Harriet Simon, Richard Leffler

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The following is a listing of the many editions and volumes that have been published by members of the ADE. Each edition contains at least one editor, and usually more, who is or has been a member of the Association. It is a remarkable record of scholarly productivity in a wide range of disciplines. These many volumes, microfilms, microfiche, and electronic editions have added greatly to the resources available to scholars and laymen alike. It should also be noted that this list is incomplete. There are many other editions that have escaped the attention of those who prepared this list.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The publication of the first volume of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project (ERPP), edited by Allida Black and her associates at George Washington University, is an event of the utmost significance to documentary editors and historians alike. Nothing like this pathbreaking volume exists in the ER literature, and this resource will forever change the research landscape. This volume stands for documentary editing at its best, and the larger ERPP itself, with its informative website and teacher training workshops, is a model of the highest editorial scholarship applied innovatively to the mission of public education.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

For more than a quarter of a century, Candace Falk and her comrades at the Emma Goldman Papers Project (EGPP) have worked to make the records of the turn-of the-century anarchist, lecturer, and social critic available. With the assistance of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), they joined with papers projects for Jane Addams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and Margaret Sanger to form the Consortium for Women’s History, part of an effort to diversify the people represented in historical editing projects. Funded by individual contributions as well as support from NHPRC and the National Endowment for …

Association For Documentary Editing 2008–9 Annual Plan Jan 2009

Association For Documentary Editing 2008–9 Annual Plan

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The ADE is at an important crossroads. Much has changed in the documentary editing profession in the past three decades. New methods of publication have emerged; the era of the large projects is diminishing; and the number of users of published historical documents has exploded as a result of the Web. Many more people are engaged in the practices that we call documentary editing (the selection, transcription, and explication of documents), but these same individuals don’t define their work or their profession as such. Scholars use new and changing tools to produce their work in ways that weren’t imaginable when …

Review Of To Live's To Fly: The Ballad Of The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt. By John Kruth A Deeper Blue: The Life And Music Of Townes Van Zandt By Robert Earl Hardy, Chuck Vollan Jan 2009

Review Of To Live's To Fly: The Ballad Of The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt. By John Kruth A Deeper Blue: The Life And Music Of Townes Van Zandt By Robert Earl Hardy, Chuck Vollan

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Townes Van Zandt was a founding member of the modern Texas singer-songwriter tradition and influenced or played with everyone from Bob Dylan to Norah Jones. His spare, evocative lyrics, coupled with his beautiful, articulate guitar playing, developed a particularly loyal and eclectic fan base. His songs have been covered most famously by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Emmylou Harris, but also by a host of great and lesser-known performers. He was a major influence on the "Outlaw" Country movement.

Van Zandt wrestled with inner demons. His eccentricities, mental illness, and the resulting heavy substance abuse, combined with often poorly produced …

Review Of The Cherokee Nation And The Trail Of Tears By Theda Perdue And Michael D. Green, Rowena Mcclinton Jan 2009

Review Of The Cherokee Nation And The Trail Of Tears By Theda Perdue And Michael D. Green, Rowena Mcclinton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Past chief of the Cherokee Nation (1985-1995) and social activist Wilma Mankiller remarked, "We are still here." Facing rampant racism, a fraudulent treaty, and then dislocation from their homelands in the southeast, Cherokees not only survived but prevailed. Reflectively, Theda Perdue and Michael Green have summarized the complexity and cunning complicity surrounding the 1838-9 infamous Cherokee displacement known as the Trail of Tears, adding to the scholarship of Tim Garrison, Gary Moulton, Walter Conser, Mary Young, and the late William G. McLoughlin.

They juxtapose the remarkable lives of two adversarial Cherokee figures, Major Ridge (along with his son John Ridge, …

Stress, Status, And Sociability: Exploring Residential Satisfaction In The Rural Midwest Following Rapid Immigration, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Amy E. Boren Jan 2009

Stress, Status, And Sociability: Exploring Residential Satisfaction In The Rural Midwest Following Rapid Immigration, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Amy E. Boren

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This investigation examined predictors of residential satisfaction among newly arrived residents (NAR) and long-term residents (LTR) of a rural community following a rapid influx of immigrants into the community. The physical environment, social/cultural aspects of life, and resources and public services were hypothesized to affect perceptions of residential satisfaction. Both LTR and NAR were pleased with environmental attributes, sociocultural attributes, and public services. An inverse relationship was revealed between stress and residential satisfaction. The primary sources of stress for LTR related to economics and social status issues, whereas the primary sources of stress among NAR involved issues concerning family and …

Easier Said Than Done--Returning Stolen Art To Its Owners: Review Of Michael J. Kurtz, America And The Return Of Nazi Contraband: The Recovery Of Europe's Cultural Treasures, Alison Stewart Jan 2009

Easier Said Than Done--Returning Stolen Art To Its Owners: Review Of Michael J. Kurtz, America And The Return Of Nazi Contraband: The Recovery Of Europe's Cultural Treasures, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

The return of "cultural treasures" stolen by the National Socialists is the subject of a burgeoning field in print and film; Michael J. Kurtz's book of 1985 is here revised and updated to include the events of recent decades: the end of the Soviet Union and a divided Germany, along with the reemergence of looted art and lawsuits seeking to reclaim it. As Kurtz states in his introduction, "cultural restitution is an ongoing phenomenon" (p. x). This situation is all too clear from Kurtz's book and parallel developments in the last few years. This extremely rich work continues to be …

Middlebrow Readers And Pioneer Heroines: Willa Cather’S My Ántonia, Bess Streeter Aldrich’S A Lantern In Her Hand, And The Popular Fiction Market, Melissa J. Homestead Jan 2009

Middlebrow Readers And Pioneer Heroines: Willa Cather’S My Ántonia, Bess Streeter Aldrich’S A Lantern In Her Hand, And The Popular Fiction Market, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Along with repositioning Cather in a new reading context, this essay aims to bring Aldrich and her novel into literary history (and college classrooms) by putting her work into dialogue with Cather’s. I do not, however, elevate Aldrich to the status of elite artist, a move that she herself would disavow. Instead, I seek to revalue the middlebrow as a mode of authorship, circulation, and reading for the literary history of the American West and to place Ántonia and Lantern together on that oft-scorned terrain. When Aldrich is taken note of in Western literary history, she receives only glancing attention …

Review Of Kate Field: The Many Lives Of A Nineteenth-Century American Journalist And Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science: An Astronomer Among The American Romantics, Melissa J. Homestead Jan 2009

Review Of Kate Field: The Many Lives Of A Nineteenth-Century American Journalist And Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science: An Astronomer Among The American Romantics, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Literary historians writing biographies have increasingly shifted from critical biography (the author’s life as a means to interpret his or her literary works) to cultural biography (an author’s life and works in various cultural contexts). As literary historians whose biographical subjects (both nineteenth-century American women) are not primarily literary figures, Bergland and Scharnhorst represent a further step away from critical biography.

As a journalist (and popular lecturer, advocate of reform, playwright, and actress), Kate Field is a more literary figure than astronomer Maria Mitchell, but Scharnhorst has produced neither a critical nor a cultural biography. Instead, he presents a chronological …

Review Of Axes: Willa Cather And William Faulkner And Violence, The Arts, And Willa Cather, Melissa J. Homestead Jan 2009

Review Of Axes: Willa Cather And William Faulkner And Violence, The Arts, And Willa Cather, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Willa Cather and William Faulkner represent an intriguing and potentially productive pairing for comparative study. Their works and careers are located at the rich intersection between regional ism and modernism, and both early 20th-century writers often looked back to the 19th century in their fiction. Even in the absence of influence or intertextual reference, these commonalities would give a literary historian much to say. However, in her study of these two authors, Merrill Maguire Skaggs exhaustively catalogs similarities and differences as proof of a decades-long competition between the authors at the expense of depth and subtlety in her analysis of …

Chaos Is The Poetry: From Outcomes To Inquiry In Service-Learning Pedagogy, Shari J. Stenberg, Darby Arant Whealy Jan 2009

Chaos Is The Poetry: From Outcomes To Inquiry In Service-Learning Pedagogy, Shari J. Stenberg, Darby Arant Whealy

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is no secret that the contemporary university values a model of efficiency, of tangible, quantifiable outcomes. Jan Currie and Lesley Vidovich (qtd. in Downing, Hurlbert, Mathieu 9) contend that since the 1980s, the boundaries between higher education, government, and business have largely deteriorated, and business discourse of "excellence" has come to dominate university culture. Consequently, output, outcomes, and efficiency are valorized over and above process, inquiry, and the inevitable tensions of learning. Stanley Aronowitz puts it this way: "[A]cademic leaders chant the mantra of excellence . . . [which] means ... all parts of the university 'perform' and are …

Saturated Memory, Jewel Noll Jan 2009

Saturated Memory, Jewel Noll

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

We face experiences in life that we cannot ignore; we approach them with uncertainty and understand them with what rational thought that we have to offer. But what about the elements of an event that we never fully understand, yet carry with us to pick apart and revisit time and time again? It is the tastes that linger in our mouths, thread through our thoughts and formulate our personalities. These are the memories that evolve us into the future and keep us searching for answers. We saturate ourselves with these uncertainties, waiting for a bit of light, a chance to …

Citric Acid Cross-Linking Of Starch Films, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Jan 2009

Citric Acid Cross-Linking Of Starch Films, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

This paper shows that citric acid can cross-link starch and improve the tensile strength, thermal stability and decrease the dissolution of starch films in water and formic acid. The poor mechanical properties and water stability of starch have restricted its industrial applications. Although cross-linking is a common approach to improve the properties of starch products, current starch cross-linking methods are either expensive, toxic or do not impart the desired properties to the cross-linked materials. In this research, the possibility of cross-linking starch films using citric acid to improve their strength and stability was examined. Citric acid cross-linked starch films show …

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell Jan 2009

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This essay discusses many of the opportunities for teachers I believe are present in the Willa Cather Archive (http://cather.unl.edu), particularly in the way the Archive makes new materials available or older materials available in a new way. Additionally, this essay suggests some of the implications of the Archive’s digital presentation of resources. However, the place of digital scholarship in academic life is still evolving, and students and teachers are just getting accustomed to using the form. Given this circumstance, many of my thoughts are inconclusive, observations based upon preliminary understandings into how this resource affects our classrooms. I avoid confident …

From The Self To The Nation: Willpower In José María Salaverría, Iker González-Allende Jan 2009

From The Self To The Nation: Willpower In José María Salaverría, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

José María Salaverría’s (1873-1940) inclusion into Spain’s so-called Generation of 1898 seems questionable for many critics. In classical studies about the writers of this generation, such as those by José Luis Abellán, Donald Shaw or Inman Fox, Salaverría is not present. Even in more recent works, for instance Nuevas perspectivas sobre el 98 (1999), edited by John Gabriele, or Spain’s 1898 Crisis (2000), edited by Joseph Harrison, no chapter investigates Salaverría’s contributions to Spanish literature in this period. Salaverría shares many characteristics with the members of the Generation of 1898: He was born in the same era, grew up in …

La Poesía De Ángela Figuera Desde La Crítica Anglosajona, Iker González-Allende Jan 2009

La Poesía De Ángela Figuera Desde La Crítica Anglosajona, Iker González-Allende

Intergenerational Spanish Transmission In El Paso, Texas: Parental Perceptions Of Cost/Benefit, M. Isabel Velázquez Jan 2009

Intergenerational Spanish Transmission In El Paso, Texas: Parental Perceptions Of Cost/Benefit, M. Isabel Velázquez

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This study examines the beliefs held by a group of adult Spanish-English bilinguals from El Paso, Texas, regarding the vitality of Spanish in their community and the ways in which their own experience of being bilingual on the US-Mexico border has influenced their perceptions of the benefits and costs of fostering Spanish development in their children. Results show that parents’ positive attitudes toward Spanish did not translate into the investment of time and resources to foster Spanish development in their children nor, ultimately, into the use of Spanish by their children. Households where the mother perceived herself as having an …

Philosemitism And Christian Hebraism In The Reformation Era (1500-1620), Stephen G. Burnett Jan 2009

Philosemitism And Christian Hebraism In The Reformation Era (1500-1620), Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Jonathan Israel argues in his seminal work European Jewry in the Age of Mercantilism (1985) that the early modern period marked a distinctive phase in the historical experience and consciousness of the Jews of Western Europe. He contends that the key factor that paved the way for these changes was the "political and spiritual upheaval which engulfed European culture as a whole by the end of the sixteenth century", above all what he terms the "Catholic-Protestant deadlock". The Protestant Reformation, which began in Wittenberg but quickly divided into several competing forms of Protestantism, evoked a Catholic Reformation in response. Polemicists …
