Consciousness In Comatose Clowns: No Funny Business, Mary Gregg Jan 2017

Consciousness In Comatose Clowns: No Funny Business, Mary Gregg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Consider the tragic case of four circus clowns whose pie-to-the-face gag effectively knocks each one into a cream-pie coma. In each of the four cases, motor capacities (voluntary speech, limb movement, etc.) Are not available to the patient's conscious control. Although none of our apparently comatose clowns have voluntary motor capacities, each has a unique set of internal and external activity going on. In other words, each of our clowns (bozo, chuckles, wiggles, and krusty, respectively), now sits in a vegetative state. Now, there's a problem. Sometimes comatose patients are conscious, so there's a big philosophical and empirical issue going …

Speak'st, Art Sound: The Material Voice In Early Modern England, Nathaniel Philip Likert Jan 2017

Speak'st, Art Sound: The Material Voice In Early Modern England, Nathaniel Philip Likert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that early moderns conceived of speech as a material phenomenon; voice struck out from bodies into environments. Early modern voices thus participate in what sound studies scholars call the soundscape, which I link to current new materialist and ecological theories of network and assemblage. Within this soundscape, I pay special attention to the role of language as a semantic system of meaning. Current ecological criticism takes for granted the utter “flatness” of ontology, and as such discards the question of human language so central to previous deconstructive and discursive scholarship. My thesis attempts to account for the …

Twinless, Molly Mccully Brown Jan 2017

Twinless, Molly Mccully Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This manuscript is concerned with the loss of my identical twin sister, who died when we were infants. The collection as a whole uses biographical experience to engage with issues of identity, grief, sisterhood, and selfhood. It’s interested in the ways that spiritual experience is borne out in the body, and in interrogating the manner in which we’re all made and marked by our own particular hieroglyphs of loss.

One Or Two Things I Know About Us: Narrative Strategies For Autoethnography, Self-Representation And Healing In Four Memoirs By Poor-White Women From The U.S. South, Joseph Aaron Farmer Jan 2017

One Or Two Things I Know About Us: Narrative Strategies For Autoethnography, Self-Representation And Healing In Four Memoirs By Poor-White Women From The U.S. South, Joseph Aaron Farmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines autobiographical writings by formerly poor white Southern women, who are rarely considered as a group and are more typically studied with “rough South” male writers, which would suggest that few women have contributed their own gendered experience to discussions of class, race, and sexuality vis-à-vis Southern poverty. Correcting this assumption, I examine formative statements by women from poor white backgrounds, including Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s Red Dirt, Janisse Ray’s Ecology of a Cracker Childhood and Wild Card Quilt, Dorothy Allison’s Trash, and Jeannette Walls’s The Glass Castle. Each of these writers engage in narrative strategies that do not defend …

Book Of Empire: The Political Bible Of U.S. Literary Modernism, Barry Hudek Jan 2017

Book Of Empire: The Political Bible Of U.S. Literary Modernism, Barry Hudek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

“Book of Empire” reveals that contrary to what is often suggested by scholars, modernism is not a moment of secularization and declining faith and that the Bible is actually a resource for mounting a radical critique of empire, nation-building, and racial oppression that defies conservative notions supporting those undertakings. For Willa Cather, William Faulkner, and Zora Neale Hurston, the Bible is a source of moral authority they use to challenge the imperialist, colonialist, and nativist projects of the twentieth-century U.S. In rebranding the Bible as politically radical, these writers are not denying the authority of the Bible, but are re-appropriating …

Mississippi Choctaw Women: Preservation And Adaptation From Post-Removal To The 1970s, Elisabeth H. Pepper Jan 2017

Mississippi Choctaw Women: Preservation And Adaptation From Post-Removal To The 1970s, Elisabeth H. Pepper

Honors Theses

This project analyzes the processes of adaptation and preservation utilized by Choctaw women in Mississippi from the post-Removal period to the end of the 1970s. It focuses specifically on the areas of women's lives concerning work, the domestic sphere, leadership roles, and recreational activities. To inform my research, I used a variety of primary and secondary sources concerning the Mississippi Choctaws, even covering the period before Removal. I studied archival documents, microfilm, newspapers, magazines and pamphlets, as well as secondary resource books concerning this topic. From my research, I concluded that women actively engaged in strategies to preserve their Choctaw …

Everybody's Story: Gertrude Stein's Career As A Nexus Connecting Writers And Painters In Bohemian Paris, Elizabeth F. Milam Jan 2017

Everybody's Story: Gertrude Stein's Career As A Nexus Connecting Writers And Painters In Bohemian Paris, Elizabeth F. Milam

Honors Theses

My thesis examines how the combination of Gertrude Stein's career, Paris, and the time period before, during, and after The Great War conflated to create the Lost Generation and affected the work of Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Hemingway. Five different sections focus on: the background of Stein and how her understanding of expression came into existence, Paris and the unique environment it provided for experimentation at the beginning of the twentieth century (and how that compared to the environment found in America), Modernism existing in Paris prior to World War One, the mass culture of militarization in World War One …

We The People: An Analysis Of The Supreme Court's Jurisprudence Relating To Constitutional Personhood, Emma Jennings Jan 2017

We The People: An Analysis Of The Supreme Court's Jurisprudence Relating To Constitutional Personhood, Emma Jennings

Honors Theses

This thesis studies the Supreme Court's jurisprudence on the issue of constitutional personhood and its historical lack of clarity and uniformity. I focus on three groups of persons who historically and frequently bring claims of constitutional protection before the Court: aliens, children, and felons. Across these three classes of claimants, case analysis shows that the Court lacks a clear framework for answering questions of constitutional personhood, instead relying on an individualistic approach in their decision-making, rendering a defined understanding of constitutional personhood impossible. I argue that the Court's current methods of decision- making produce inequality and second-class citizenship, and further, …

Please Accept My Love: Race, Culture, And B.B. King's Live In Cook County Jail, Eugene Brinson Polk Iii Jan 2017

Please Accept My Love: Race, Culture, And B.B. King's Live In Cook County Jail, Eugene Brinson Polk Iii

Honors Theses

This thesis uses a specific event, B.B. King's performance in 1970 and subsequent album from Chicago's Cook County Jail, to study the intersections of race, music, and American culture. First, I trace the events leading up to the performance and album and contextualize both within King's career and the history of race relations in the South and in Chicago. Second, I detail the history of Cook County Jail and King's subsequent prison activism. All in all, this thesis argues that the sense of racial bondage shared between the blues, King, and the inmates at Cook County Jail, is the primary …

I Once Knew A Man: A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Masculine Social Constructions And Historical Jesus Studies, Joshua Law Jan 2017

I Once Knew A Man: A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Masculine Social Constructions And Historical Jesus Studies, Joshua Law

Honors Theses

This is a two part thesis. Part I contains a literature survey in which I surveyed published material on the way Jesus' canonical masculinity is constructed in the context of Greco-Roman masculinities. Part II of this work is a case study analysis of the masculinity of Jesus as constructed by Marcus Borg and N.T. Wright in their book, The Meaning of Jesus. In order to do this, I surveyed literature and compiled profiles of masculinity from the late 20th century western world. Next, I analyzed Borg and Wright's Jesus' in the context of the relevant profiles of western masculinity. The …

Two Traditions Diverged From Israel's Land: One Winding And Abstract, One Expounded But Intact, Both Meriting The Comparison At Hand, Keri Anniece Crum Jan 2017

Two Traditions Diverged From Israel's Land: One Winding And Abstract, One Expounded But Intact, Both Meriting The Comparison At Hand, Keri Anniece Crum

Honors Theses

The Hebrew Bible contains numerous laws dealing with property and land. Many different areas of thought are worked in to these laws. In addition, land/property laws were applied to many different aspects of the Israelites' social life. However, when utilized by the authors of the New Testament and the Mishnah and Talmud, the Hebrew Bible concept of property was altered in drastically different ways. The first section of this thesis outlines key land and property laws found in the Hebrew Bible as they relate to divine ownership and inheritance, the monarchy, the poor, and the family within ancient Israelite society. …

Sex And The Law Of Ancient Athens, Laura S. Dona Jan 2017

Sex And The Law Of Ancient Athens, Laura S. Dona

Honors Theses

This paper will explore the legal implications of social norms and taboos surrounding both biological sex distinctions and sexuality in Ancient Athens. I believe that the legal speeches used in Ancient Athenian court cases reflect a unique gateway into understand these social norms, because these speeches are arguments made in an attempt to appeal to a jury of Athenian citizens. From these arguments, we can infer what would likely be honorable versus condemnable, and from the logical structure of the arguments we can further understand their legal reasoning. From what I have researched on biological sex and sexuality norms of …

Little Philosophers: Assessing And Prompting Philosophical Reasoning With Children, Makensey Sanders Jan 2017

Little Philosophers: Assessing And Prompting Philosophical Reasoning With Children, Makensey Sanders

Honors Theses

There is a debate in academic philosophy and psychology of whether or not children can or should do philosophy. Robert Kitchener asserts that due to cognitive limitations, children under the age of 10 cannot think philosophically (Kitchener, 1990). Murris (2000) challenges Kitchener's arguments and concludes that more research is needed. Further, this is a period during which children show individual differences and development in cognitive capacity, specifically within executive function relating to conscious control that may influence abstract thought (Zelazo et al., 1997). The present study assessed 7- to 9-year-olds' and adults' ability to answer philosophical questions in relation to …

There's Only This: Atheism And The Search For Meaning In Ian Mcewan's Fiction, Olivia Hope Davis Jan 2017

There's Only This: Atheism And The Search For Meaning In Ian Mcewan's Fiction, Olivia Hope Davis

Honors Theses

In this thesis, I offer readings of Ian McEwan's Enduring Love, Saturday, and The Children Act to study the relationship between meaning and faith. This is an important question because some New Atheists have pointed to McEwan's work as proof that meaning is possible in the absence of God. In this thesis I suggest that while McEwan makes a strong case for the possibility of meaning through aesthetic experiences, he also complicates meaning by suggesting that it is only achievable in the context of belief in the irreducibility of ideas like love, beauty, and wonder.

Comparative Analysis Of Hong Kong And Taiwan's Independence Movements: A Case Study Of Identity And Politics Using Social Movement Theory, Sarah A. Hasselle Jan 2017

Comparative Analysis Of Hong Kong And Taiwan's Independence Movements: A Case Study Of Identity And Politics Using Social Movement Theory, Sarah A. Hasselle

Honors Theses

This thesis is a comparative study on the Taiwanese and Hong Kongese independence movements. Structured by social movement theory, this study focuses on how each movement evolved after a central cause and focuses on the different components of the social movements. This paper also includes an analysis on national pride in Taiwan and Hong Kong, tested by using SPSS and data from Asian Barometer. The two independence movements can both be understood through its supporters' concerns, and in both cases, identity is described as something culturally distinct from the mainland. As for determining national pride, my analysis indicates that, in …

Nella Larsen: An Untold Story Of Race Through Literature, Bria Stephens Stephens Jan 2017

Nella Larsen: An Untold Story Of Race Through Literature, Bria Stephens Stephens

Honors Theses

This study explores the life of Nella Larsen, investigating how her unusual childhood and early adulthood provided substance for her to make critical and unique views on race relations and racially dichotomized communities. The study shows how the Harlem Renaissance was essential in providing this outlet to Larsen; it was an era where African American art was lauded. The investigation required research into Larsen's childhood and early adult life using several different pieces of biographical works. After detailing impactful events in her early life, the study developed further with critical analyzation of her fictional short stories and novels. Additional research …

Madness In The Middle Ages: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The Medieval Era Based On Order And Gender, Bailey Grace Elkin Jan 2017

Madness In The Middle Ages: An Examination Of The Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The Medieval Era Based On Order And Gender, Bailey Grace Elkin

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the treatment of the mad in Europe during the Middle Ages. I read various primary and secondary sources in the course of my investigation. Several of the secondary sources used quotes from primary sources, so I used some of that evidence as well. My conclusions were that the treatment of the mad varied based on gender and estate. When someone from the third estate went mad, family members tried mostly religious cures, since those were the only resources available to them. When members of the second estate went mad, relatives, other members of the nobility, and the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse and the history and organization of the New England Youth Ensemble (NEYE). The Grounding Of Effective Aristotelian Law, Kyra Kinnaman Jan 2017

The Grounding Of Effective Aristotelian Law, Kyra Kinnaman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper aims to contribute meaningfully to Aristotelian scholarship by articulating the grounding of effective law. The grounding of law is the reason for which law’s efficacy can be explained. Two popular contenders for this explanation are natural law theory and legal positivism; however, this paper will build off the work of Donald Schroeder to show that neither theory is a tenable explanation for the grounding of Aristotelian law. Although Schroeder rejects natural law and positivism as appropriate interpretations of Aristotle, he fails to articulate what ultimately is the grounding of efficacious law. The final section of this paper will …

Revolutionary Fathers: Republican Fatherhood And The American Revolution And Early Republic 1763-1814, Travis Jaquess Jaquess Jan 2017

Revolutionary Fathers: Republican Fatherhood And The American Revolution And Early Republic 1763-1814, Travis Jaquess Jaquess

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines American fathers in the eighteenth century and argues that the American Revolution, both the war itself and the ideology it created, affected attitudes towards and practices of fatherhood. Historians have characterized the father/son relationship in the Revolutionary period as one of filial rebellion against their patriarchal fathers. My work finds, conversely, that because of their experience in the Revolution, ideas such as liberty and equality which spread throughout the colonies, and additional opportunities available to industrious young men due to national independence, fathers actively prepared their sons for an independent life free from patronage, massive inheritances, and …

The Archive, Hailey Cecilia Christian Hodge Jan 2017

The Archive, Hailey Cecilia Christian Hodge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Archive is an installation that considers the human brain’s potential to distort memory over time. Memories from our past can be changed by our current atmosphere, manipulated by our emotions towards the experience, or can altogether be forgotten. Humans explore the world through their eyes, making mental photographs to help them navigate the future through the experiences of their past. However, the human memory is faulty at best. We all have memories stored, false memories that we believe, and we continue to create new memories every moment. This body of work is exploring how the passage of time and …

Vergangenheitsbewältigung- Und Aufarbeitung In Der Verlorene, Am Beispiel Meines Bruders Und Pawels Briefe, Peter Akintunde Ogunniran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The search for a collective past between East and West Germany has caused an increase in the number of family novels since the reunification. Also, the need to preserve and consolidate the memory of events that took place during the Third Reich as the war generation begins to pass on has informed the proliferation of family narratives by the post-war generation, whose childhood was rooted in the post-war East and West Germany. This thesis discusses process of coming in terms with the past among the war generation and the post-war generation in novels of Hans-Ulrich Treichel (Der Verlorene), Uwe Timm …

Cold War New York: Postmodernism, Lyricism, And Queer Aesthetics In 1970s New York Poetry, Jared James O'Connor Jan 2017

Cold War New York: Postmodernism, Lyricism, And Queer Aesthetics In 1970s New York Poetry, Jared James O'Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the poetry of Joe Brainard and Anne Waldman, two poets of the critically neglected second-generation New York school. I argue that Brainard and Waldman help define the emerging discourse of postmodern poetry through their attention to cold war culture of the 1970s, countercultural ideologies, and poetic form. Both Brainard and Waldman enact a poetics of vulnerability in their work, situating themselves as wholly unique from their late-modernist predecessors. In doing so, they help engender a poetics concerned not only with the intellectual stakes but with the cultural environment they are forced to navigate. Chapter 1 explores Brainard's …
