Écriture Féminine Africaine Au Vingt-Et-Unième Siècle: Une Proposition De Cours De Littérature Africaine Pour Les Étudiants De Master Et Doctorat, Anaïs Louise Siewe Deuga
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
African Literature has been taught in universities of the world for almost 60 years now. Since then, it has evolved tremendously but the syllabi of these courses haven’t really. Most of the texts read during the twentieth century and considered as classics of African literature are still studied today while more recent literary works are ignored by scholars. Moreover, back then, it was considered useless for a girl to receive an education, priority was given to boys instead; as a result there were more educated boys than girls, and thus more male writers than female ones and these few female …

Activist Modernisms: Human Rights And Anti-Totalitarianism In Mid-Twentieth Century Literature, Mary Ellen Gray
Activist Modernisms: Human Rights And Anti-Totalitarianism In Mid-Twentieth Century Literature, Mary Ellen Gray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The period after World War II saw the emergence of a new discourse of human rights, with the signing of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the postwar period and throughout the twentieth century, human rights would often be vieas a set of self-evident, monolithic, and timeless values that had merely reached their full realization after the horrors of the war. This study examines a body of literature from the 1930s and 40s, the wartime moment just before the foundation of the twentieth century universal rights ideology, to explore the process by which theories of human rights are …
Whistle Before You Work: Defining Paid Labor In The New Deal State, 1938-1947, Thomas Porter
Whistle Before You Work: Defining Paid Labor In The New Deal State, 1938-1947, Thomas Porter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis traces the conceptualization of work from the passage of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) through the Portal-To-Portal Pay Act of 1947. I argue that the FLSA created a new framework for industrial laborers to define what constituted work. This enables an understanding of work as defined by those in mines and on the industrial plants floor, allowing those who were closest to toil and exertion to create their own definitions. By 1946, Congress heeded to the complaints of the military and capitalists and codified their definition of work and the work week. This restricted the broadly …
Knowledge, Assertiveness, Competence: Using A Self-Determination Theory Framework To Explain Sexual Satisfaction In College Students, Tanja Seifen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sexual satisfaction has been shown to be related to many positive factors such as high relationship satisfaction enhanced physical and psychological health and increased overall well-being. Despite making up 27% of the sexually active population in the United States young people (ages 15-24) but are typically not taught about the benefits of sexual satisfaction or how to have a pleasurable sexual experience. Due to their high risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies most education and research on young people’s sexuality focuses on risk behaviors and prevention. The goal of this study was to take a positive outlook …
A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Student Motivation Type, Performance, And Task- Based Instruction In A Second Language Classroom, Charlie Winnick
A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Student Motivation Type, Performance, And Task- Based Instruction In A Second Language Classroom, Charlie Winnick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the level, and type, of motivation that students at the University of Mississippi have for their foreign language classes. The study for this thesis will also investigate the participants’ feelings towards the methodology being used in that foreign language classroom, which will be Task-Based Learning. The 20 participants, who were all enrolled in the same French 111, intensive language program, for the 5-month fall semester of 2018 were asked to complete two questionnaires, one at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. The participants would also complete a short quiz of fundamental knowledge at …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Rehearsal Techniques Of Expert Middle School Band Directors From Kentucky, Mississippi, And Tennessee, David John Culp Jr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to identify rehearsal techniques among expert middle school band directors Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Twenty-one potential participants were recommended by university faculty and other leaders within the profession. Seven directors were identified who met criteria for participation in the study. Six directors agreed to participate, but due to scheduling conflicts, five were observed. Participants were observed and video recorded for three consecutive rehearsals. Initial analysis divided rehearsals into subsections including: warm-up, repertoire rehearsal, run-through performance, and non-instructional time. Repertoire rehearsal time for all participants was then systematically analyzed using rehearsal frames with two …

A Descriptive Study Of The Faber Series Piano Adventures And Its Implications For Piano Pedagogy, Martha Frances Monroe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the Piano Adventures method books written by Randall and Nancy Faber. The series was thoroughly researched and developed for ten years before it was published in 1993. Since that time, the series has been enhanced and has added numerous additional books of repertoire, technique, and improvisation. An online application has been created to help not only students, but also to provide teaching tools and guides for teachers. With the inclusion of technology at the forefront of all education, the Faber series has opened the door for students through a new approach that …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With this exhibition, I strive to create sculptures that reveal beauty and act as a visual reminder of the destruction we have caused by decades of industrial negligence and greed. Using the principles and elements of design I hope to create visually stimulating objects that resembles the beauty found in the hills of Appalachia. A dialogue is fostered that influences future generations by bringing to light the reality of our past transgressions.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within this project I have compiled a book length collection of poems entitled “FLEX” which explore questions of violence, inheritance and pastoral poetics. Taking place across the landscapes of Mississippi, The Dominican Republic, and contemporary Black masculinity FLEX serves to ask questions of what violences contributed to the speaker’s birth and what possibilities exist on the other side of such historical pain.
A Bargain At Any Cost: The Rise Of Dollar General, Frances Evelyn Barrett
A Bargain At Any Cost: The Rise Of Dollar General, Frances Evelyn Barrett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dollar General Corporation has grown into a retail titan with more than 15 000 stores across the continental United States. The first chapter of this thesis traces the history of this multibillion-dollar firm since its founding as a family-run business in Scottsville Kentucky in the late 1930s. Situating Dollar General’s history within the evolving contexts of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries illustrates that Dollar General Stores succeed when the economy staggers. Neoliberalism and global finance capitalism have only exacerbated the geographic expansion and profitability of the company as the second chapter begins to explore. Although Dollar General Stores open at …
Fictionalist Truth Conditions For An Expressivist Semantics Of Slurs, Celine J. Geday
Fictionalist Truth Conditions For An Expressivist Semantics Of Slurs, Celine J. Geday
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are broadly two kinds of accounts of slurs: ones that place the derogation in the content of what is said or some concept associated with the words themselves or those that argue derogation takes places in the expression of some state of the slur-user – that derogation is part of the use of the slurring words. In this paper I argue that an expressivist account of slurs can be combined with a semantic account in which the truth conditions of the semantic account are fictional.

Connecting Thread, Christen Parker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Up until about the 1960’s, sculpture was dominated by work made with metal, wood, or stone. These materials would be described as “hard” or “masculine,” while materials such as fabric or yarn are described as “soft” or “feminine.” Fabric is known for its softness and malleability and is commonly used to cover the human body for objects such as clothing or bedding. The materials that I have selected are generally considered soft, yet protective, but are also thought of as insubstantial and fragile. As a child, I would see quilts and hear stories about how my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother …
Identity, Dissent, And The Roots Of Georgia’S Middle Class, 1848-1865, Thomas Robinson
Identity, Dissent, And The Roots Of Georgia’S Middle Class, 1848-1865, Thomas Robinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation, which focuses on Georgia from 1848 until 1865, argues that a middle class formed in the state during the antebellum period. By the time secession occurred, the class coalesced around an ideology based upon modernization, industrialization, reform, occupation, politics, and northern influence. These factors led the doctors, lawyers, merchants, ministers, shopkeepers, and artisans who made up Georgia’s middle class to view themselves as different than Georgians above or below them on the economic scale. The feeling was often mutual, as the rich viethe middle class as a threat due to their income and education level while the poor …
My Feet Are Chained: Settler Colonialism And Mobility In The Florida Borderlands, 1812-1866, Christine Antoinette Rizzi
My Feet Are Chained: Settler Colonialism And Mobility In The Florida Borderlands, 1812-1866, Christine Antoinette Rizzi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project uses the framework of mobility to understand how settler colonialism functioned in a tri-racial southern borderland in the nineteenth-century. Nineteenth-century Florida constituted a borderland characterized by competition for land and resources among Seminole Indians, African Americans, and white Americans. White Americans regulated mobility, i.e. the physical movement of peoples, in order to privilege their own settlement in Florida, divest native peoples of their land, and enslave people of African descent. Beginning in 1812 and lasting through the first half of the 1860s, white Americans used legislation, the settlement of white families, the solidification of a slave system, and …
Alaska And The Arctic In The U.S. Imaginary, Ryan Charlton
Alaska And The Arctic In The U.S. Imaginary, Ryan Charlton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Popular narratives of Alaska have long relied on the region’s mythical status as the “last frontier” a perception which enfolds Alaska into a continental narrative of U.S. expansion. This frontier image has foreclosed our ability to appreciate the profound instability which the 1867 Alaska Purchase brought into U.S. national discourse at a time when Americans were eager to adopt a fixed national identity. In the three decades following the purchase Alaska would resist incorporation into the national imaginary challenging the coherence of U.S. national identity and calling into question foundational myths of the United States as a continental and agrarian …
Measures Of Music Teacher Effectiveness In Three Early Career Levels, Alicia L. Canterbury
Measures Of Music Teacher Effectiveness In Three Early Career Levels, Alicia L. Canterbury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corroborative findings across instructional targets rehearsal frames and the summative evaluations indicated a general lack of specificity across all levels which improved somewhat during student teaching and peer teaching. Unidentified targets and nonspecific positive feedback were observed less frequently in student teaching and novice teaching. No growth was found across levels in specific positive and negative feedback. Directives were the most frequently observed teacher verbal category in selected rehearsal frames and information and demonstrations were consistently the highest ranked items across all levels in the summative evaluation. However instructional directive scores were inconsistent. Results indicate that new teachers of all …

To Sink Our National Character: Slavery And National Character In The U.S. House Of Representatives, 1789-1820, Jessica Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1790 1804 and 1819 the U.S. House of Representatives debated measures intended to restrict slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. During these three debates slaveholding representatives primarily from the Lower South attempted to call into question the general government’s right to discuss and legislate on slavery contending that except for in a few specific instances outlined in the Constitution slavery was purely a state matter not a national one. Their opponents employed a variety of tactics to counter this idea. One particularly effective approach was an expression of concern for the impact of slavery and the slave trade on …
Mandated Representation: The Effect Of Legislative Gender Quotas On Attitudes Toward Gender Equality, Rustin Suray
Mandated Representation: The Effect Of Legislative Gender Quotas On Attitudes Toward Gender Equality, Rustin Suray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Do gender quotas actually change attitudes toward gender equality? Research suggests that quotas influence gender norms but very little work has looked at whether individual attitudes themselves change when gender quotas are enacted. This paper attempts to fill this void by studying the relationship between quota implementation and gender attitudes at a cross-national level using longitudinal survey data from the World Values Survey in a two-level random intercept multi-level model. This type of model is appropriate because it does not assume that individual observations in the data are independent from one another. The individual respondents from the WVS data are …

Truth Marching On: Documenting The Plan To Bring Robert F. Kennedy To The University Of Mississippi In 1966, Mary Paige Blessey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My documentary project focuses on the group of students who planned this event and why they invited Kennedy. The thesis project consists of two parts: a film and a paper. This paper accompanies the documentary thesis film Truth Marching On: Robert F. Kennedy at the University of Mississippi. In this paper, I attempt to do the following: 1) summarize the necessary backstory of Kennedy’s 1966 visit to the university that is central to my film and paper; 2) provide information and analysis of the components that make up the short film, which include interviews, archival materials, and additional film …
A Corpus-Based Study On The Portuguese Translations Of English Adversative Coordinating Conjunctions And Adverbs In News Texts, Marcella Cerqueira Cascione Cerqueira Netto
A Corpus-Based Study On The Portuguese Translations Of English Adversative Coordinating Conjunctions And Adverbs In News Texts, Marcella Cerqueira Cascione Cerqueira Netto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines how adversative coordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs are translated from English into Brazilian Portuguese through a parallel corpus built specifically for this research. The corpus is composed of 59 news articles extracted from the online versions of the British magazine The Economist and the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. While the former contains the original source texts, the latter consists of their respective translations. This research aims to verify if the translations of the adversative coordinating conjunctions and adverbs provided by four online bilingual dictionaries are the same or different from the ones …
Vicar Victoria: Writing The Church Of England In Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Rachel Elizabeth Cason
Vicar Victoria: Writing The Church Of England In Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Rachel Elizabeth Cason
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vicar Victoria: Writing the Church of England in Nineteenth-Century Fiction shows how the organizing force of the Anglican Church and the figure of the Anglican clergyman were used to interrogate social, legal, and historical developments in nineteenth-century fiction. The project outlines how authors reacted to events such as Pluralism reform, the opening of training schools for clergy, and the Oxford Movement. There was a growing importance of institutions (including new physical buildings and Anglican reform movements). Further, the clergy, pushed by the increased expectation to modernize and professionalize, became a specialist career, with raised training and performance requirements. As a …
Disturbing The Ecological Pastoral: An Examination Of Willa Cather's Fictional Spaces In My Ántonia And Death Comes For The Archbishop, Anne Carter Stowe
Disturbing The Ecological Pastoral: An Examination Of Willa Cather's Fictional Spaces In My Ántonia And Death Comes For The Archbishop, Anne Carter Stowe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Willa Cather is universally lauded for her ability to render landscape into prose. Critics have observed for years that the landscape often functions as the main character in her fiction, or that her characters can easily be evaluated in terms of how deep and successful their relationships to the land are. In an attempt to evaluate Cather’s treatment of two different “Western” landscapes, I will focus first on My Ántonia, one of her most famous Nebraska novels, and second on Death Comes for the Archbishop, whose narrative unravels on the New Mexican landscape. I argue that Cather treats …
Courtroom Wars: Constitutional Battles Over Conscription In The Civil War North, Nicholas Matthew Mosvick
Courtroom Wars: Constitutional Battles Over Conscription In The Civil War North, Nicholas Matthew Mosvick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In February 1863, Congress considered a bill to create for the first-time conscription at the national level. Democratic politicians vigorously protested that the proposed act was unconstitutional and destroyed the state militias. When Congress passed the Enrollment Act, commonly known as the “Conscription Act,” on March 3, 1863, outcry from Democrats about the unconstitutionality of national conscription immediately followed. In New York and Pennsylvania, Democratic newspaper editors and politicians decreed the act the worst among the Lincoln war measures in threatening to subvert the constitutional republic and to transform the United States into a despotism under the control of an …
Of Mules And Mamas: Four Women, Africana Mothering, And Resistance, Ebony Olivia Lumumba
Of Mules And Mamas: Four Women, Africana Mothering, And Resistance, Ebony Olivia Lumumba
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The black woman’s humanity is unjustly linked to domestic responsibility and, thus, the traditional constraints of mothering. The roles of the mother and the created archetype of the mammy often become marred with the latter role overtaking the former—leaving black children without full benefit and access to their biological maternal parent. With the pervasive threat to black lives present in spaces all over the globe, for women of the African Diaspora, simply deciding to accept the role of a mother to a life that is physically, socially, and economically under siege is revolutionary. Considering this, the act of mothering, especially …
