Journey Throughout South Africa And Beyond, Rachel Fracasso
Journey Throughout South Africa And Beyond, Rachel Fracasso
Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019
By studying abroad in Cape Town, I discovered a new part of the world that I had yet to experience. My goal throughout this project was to document and organize these discoveries in an engaging way and share what I learned about South Africa and beyond in an interactive, visually appealing, educational, and engaging way. My project is photography based, and a collection of my photographs will be displayed in the Creative Studios in the Richter Library. These pictures are a representation of the most meaningful, special, surprising, and challenging parts of my study abroad experience from the Spring 2019 …
Female Expression In Hispanic Art, Kristine Reynardus
Female Expression In Hispanic Art, Kristine Reynardus
Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019
I explored female representation in Hispanic/LatinX Art through transcending multiple means of understanding. I provided the historical context of the artist along with relevant biographic information that likely informed their artistic style, whether that be family history or places of study. Another dimension would include the visual representation of the artist’s work. The way I imagine these coming to life would be through mini galleries of well-know and lesser known works of the artist. The last component of the project would be what ties all of this information together: making it a map of the Americas! An early vision of …

In The Eye Of The Activist: Surveying Student Movements Through Visual Mediums, Amber Tavakoly
Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019
By researching and analyzing propaganda of various social movements of the 20th and 21st century, this project surveys the power of visual mediums of communication (e.g., posters, flyers, brochures, photographs, art, etc.) to promote the messages and missions of movements. This project explores how visual messages permeate public thought to enhance advocacy, with particular emphasis on how some images ultimately define the movements in which they were born. With an emphasis on student-led protest movements, this project cross-examines how visual media influences the branding and perception of a protest. Social movements include student-led protests in Brazil, Chile, France, …

Miami Craft Brewery Collection, David Lanster
Library Research Scholars Program 2018-2019
The Miami food scene - including restaurants, breweries, bakeries, and distilleries - is in a state unlike any it has experienced before. Fueled by innovators in cuisine and tangible public excitement, it is an unprecedented time in terms of both quantity and quality for South Floridians to eat and drink. The Miami Craft Brewery Collection effort within the Special Collections hopes to document and celebrate the rise of Craft Brewing in Miami through the collection of brewery documents, advertising ephemera, bottles/labels, actual beer, and oral histories from prominent leaders in the field.

The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan
The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan
Library Articles, Papers, and Presentations
This article examines the recurring ways in which some of the most popular DH tools are presented as easy to use. It argues that attempts to couch powerful tools in what is often false familiarity, directly undermines the goal of encouraging scholarly innovation and risk taking. The consequences of framing digital tools as either easy or more difficult shapes the relationship between librarians and the students and faculty whose research they support, and, more broadly, the role and viability of libraries as spaces devoted to skill acquisition.

Miami: Then & Now, Dana Mcgeehan
Library Research Scholars Program 2017-2018
This project consists of an ArcGIS Story Map of Miami-Dade County. Each “then” and “now” photo set will be marked with an icon on the map. The side-bar will show viewers two photos of the same physical space. These photos can be placed side-by-side. These spaces will mostly be buildings, but may also focus on the landscape through maps and how this has changed over time. The “then” photos come primarily from the UM Library’s Special Collections and the Florida State Archives website, floridamemory.com. The “now” photos are ones that I’ve taken myself. A paragraph or two of contextual/background information …

The Progression Of Emotional Trauma From 1688 To 2018: Finding Reality In The Abstract, Jacqueline S. Way
The Progression Of Emotional Trauma From 1688 To 2018: Finding Reality In The Abstract, Jacqueline S. Way
2018 Entries
Since the conclusion of the Second World War, understanding trauma and PTSD in relation to the progression of both history and basic human nature, especially during times of uncertainty, has grown in popularity. The study of PTSD was first introduced by Johannes Hofer, in 1688, as a form of nostalgia, but in recent decades, the definition of emotional trauma has been debated. Siegfried Sassoon, a famous poet during the World Wars, wrote about trauma in terms of its impact. Originally, it was thought trauma could only exist if the world moved in a linear nature, not cyclical. But as society …

Perspectives: Miami Through a Different Lens
In Perspectives, a student-produced journal of student writing, University of Miami writers mix their stories with the stories of local individuals from marginalized groups to learn more about themselves, their community partners, and the world we share. Its editors hope the journal will spark a passion for change in those who read it and those who contribute to it.
In the first volume, students wrote with women incarcerated at the Homestead Correctional Institution and farmworkers from Homestead represented by the advocacy and educational group WeCount! For the second issue, which was devoted to the theme of social justice, students exchanged …

Perspectives: Miami Through a Different Lens
"The students at the University of Miami have combined their stories with those of marginalized groups within the country to learn more about themselves and the world they live in. They spoke to women from the Homestead Correctional Institution by taking part in the Exchange for Change program and communicated with undocumented farm workers in the area through WeCount.
The journal features submissions from students and their exchange partners in the form of excerpts from their exchange letters, as well as several collaborative stories that students wrote with the women of HCI. Students wrote reflections on their dinner with farm …

Dialogues With The Informal City: Latin America And The Caribbean, Ariel C. Armony, Adib Cure, Carie Penabad
Center for Latin American Studies Publications
This publication, based on the symposium Dialogues with the Informal City: Latin America and the Caribbean, connects a range of fundamental themes affecting the current conditions and future of Latin America’s growing informal cities and, by extension, the rising global urban population. Informal cities can be described as settlements frequently characterized by organic physical patterns built incrementally over time as the needs and circumstances of a community change. While undeniably precarious in construction, informal cities exhibit underlying urban and architectural patterns of remarkable resilience; moreover, they reflect their inhabitants’ enduring cultural values. While seriously affected by poverty and violence, …

Writing Indigenous Activism In Brazil: Belo Monte And The Acampamento Indígena Revolucionário, Tracy Devine Guzmán

Claiming the authority to adopt the pen (and the laptop) on behalf of their communities and in the interest of “all humanity,” Native Brazilian writers call into question the nationalist rhetoric, colonialist rationale, and neoliberal math that have been used by the state and propped up by its dominant majority to justify recent anti-indigenous public policies in the name of Brazilian sovereignty and development. Key among these is the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, revived from military rule by the administration of President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, and currently a lynchpin of the Rousseff administration’s Accelerated Growth Program (PAC). In …
