While William Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets have been discussed time and time again over the past few centuries, one topic that has been less traversed is the connection between his Comedies and Niccolò Machiavelli’s political ideologies. This project will explore references of lions and foxes in Shakespeare’s Comedies and the leaders and monarchs within them to determine how beliefs about Machiavelli’s political ideology influenced Shakespeare’s literature and became symbols for leadership and power. This project will be important for gaining historical context on Machiavellian political discourse and how it was represented in the contemporary dramatic literature of William Shakespeare. I …

Cracking A Back Is Not Rehabilitation: A Comparative Analysis Of Chiropractic Vs. Physical Therapy, Lauren M. Radack
Student Scholar Showcase
There is an increasingly common belief among the general public that chiropractic care is more successful in treating injuries than physical therapy. Research shows that chiropractic care cannot be compared to physical therapy due to their different skill sets, knowledge of treatment, and applications; therefore, one modality cannot be determined better than the other. While the two domains are incomparable, individuals continue to feel pressured to select between chiropractic care and physical Therapy. Analyzing the influence of the false claims and misinformation that surrounds rehabilitation services, the belief that physical therapy treatment is able to be replaced by chiropractic treatment …

Use Of Eeg-Based Machine Learning To Predict Music-Related Brain Activity, Charles Skutt
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Music has many awe-inspiring characteristics. Some may refer to it as a “universal language” with the ability to transcend the barriers of speech, while others may describe its ability to evoke intense emotional experiences for the listener. Regardless of the description, it is a commonly held view that music can have many profound effects. Studies of music’s effects have found these beliefs to be more than pure conjecture, finding that music interacts with and changes our brains in physical and emotional ways. Music can even have clinical applications, such as music therapy. This type of therapy has been shown to …

Wrongly convicted persons should be offered reparations in instances where they have suffered or faced harm as a result of their wrong conviction. Harms can include, but are not limited to, losing physical time, mental health damages, monetary harm, and damages to the person’s reputation. Harms are anything that has diminished a person's quality of life throughout the conviction process and even after exoneration. Failure to offer reparations to these persons is unethical and reparations are a necessary consequence when the judicial system convicts the wrong person. Failure to offer reparations also lessens the judicial system’s accuracy and reliability when …

Emotion And The Visual Arts, Hailey Bayne
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The emotional aspect of the visual arts has been researched and reviewed for decades, and many artists have completed work with the purpose to instill an emotional response in the viewer. How are emotions communicated and perceived through the visual arts? Utilizing knowledge from centuries of art theory, other emotion-focused artists, and the science behind the core emotions, I completed five multimedia pieces in complete isolation whilst triggering only one singular core emotion per piece. I used my understanding of myself and my emotional responses to center each piece around a different schedule, diet, look, and routine complimentary to the …

Self Expression Through Music, Meagan L. Campbell
Self Expression Through Music, Meagan L. Campbell
Agora
Positive self expression is a familiar concept to people of every origin, so there are recognizable expressions of positive emotions that span across cultures, song and dance being two of those forms. When voices are raised in song or bodies are seen moving in rhythm (or off rhythm) to a beat, it is natural for people’s minds to jump right to “celebration!” However, what are often times considered forms of joyous expression become expressions of passionate pain in dark times. The darkest time in American history was when slavery was practiced, so for slaves, singing was not an expression of …

Examining A Natural Duty Of Justice And Its Implications, Taylor M. Belknap
Examining A Natural Duty Of Justice And Its Implications, Taylor M. Belknap

John Rawls crafts a natural duty of justice to legitimize a duty to obey and support a just political institution. In creating this natural duty, Rawls assumes an objective standard of justice, which has significant implications on his natural duty. Political institutions often have aspects of justice and injustice, and in this paper I examine the implications of this gradient of justice and how it affects the resulting duty that Rawls identifies. In addition to this examination, the consequences of an imperfect duty resulting from a political institution which is not perfectly just will also be addressed and Rawls’ principle, …

How can the study of core texts contribute to a sense of common humanity, gracious diction, and leadership in a chaotic world? Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethicsand Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy: Infernoexamine ideals of morality, friendship, and happiness in ways that still ring true. Aristotle's Ethicsdeal primarily with the ideal of mhde/n a!gan—nothing in excess. Human passions and desires are to be tempered by reason; likewise, human rationality is made complete by proper desires and sentiments. Dante follows Aristotle's ideas and brings them further, demonstrating that passion—or as he terms it, love—is a good thing so long as it is directed …

Evaluating The Historical Accuracy Of Blackwork Embroidery With Fractal Analysis, Rhiannon Cire
Evaluating The Historical Accuracy Of Blackwork Embroidery With Fractal Analysis, Rhiannon Cire
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The intricate monochromatic embroidery that graced the collars and cuffs of Renaissance nobility and domestic materials from that era has been little studied beyond the historical costuming and crafting communities. This style, known as blackwork, for it was traditionally done in black silk on white linen, exemplifies how complex and visually-appealing designs can arise from repetition of simple forms, often demonstrating the fractal property of self-similarity. Though most blackwork patterns are not true fractals, fractal analysis offers a means of objectively quantifying their complexity and new lens through which to examine this embroidery technique. The purpose of this study was …
A Search For Aristotelian Political Friendship In Thomas Jefferson’S Ideal American Regime, Christopher Hiatt O'Connor
A Search For Aristotelian Political Friendship In Thomas Jefferson’S Ideal American Regime, Christopher Hiatt O'Connor
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
In this project, I elucidate the presence of Aristotelian political friendship within Thomas Jefferson's ideal American regime. The project considers the aspects of Aristotle's political thought that are relevant to political friendship, and draws parallels to Jefferson's political philosophy through: (1) the organization of the regime and its citizens (the constitution and construction of the regime, the class demographics of its citizens, etc.); and (2) the philosophical principles that inform the aim(s) and end (telē) of the regime.
Despite notable differences between their political philosophies--such as Jefferson's inclusion of Christian moral philosophy in his thought--I conclude that Jefferson's attempts to …
