Kobe Bryant, Richard C. Crepeau
Kobe Bryant, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The first reaction was disbelief, then shock, then sorrow. Kobe Bryant and his 13 year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash. Then more news tumbles out and it gets worse. Later, when the photos of Kobe and his daughter appeared in the media it is heartbreaking.
The Astros Et.Al., Richard C. Crepeau
The Astros Et.Al., Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
In studying World War I, the American historian Bruce Catton identified a simple and ironclad rule concerning technology: What you can do, you must do. I was thinking about the current uproar over the Houston Astros’ use of technology to steal signs and I thought about Catton’s observation and how it might offer some understanding of what happened in this latest of baseball scandals.
The Nfl And Volleyball, Richard C. Crepeau
The Nfl And Volleyball, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The day following the end of the NFL regular season has come to be known as “Black Monday” as it is the day that head coaches of poorly performing teams are fired. I would suggest that some consideration be given to changing the term to “White Monday” because the firing of coaches has resulted primarily in the opening of head coaching positions to white coaches. On another coaching front, a similar story, but this one based on gender was highlight recently by The New York Times. Since the passage of Title IX, women’s sport has experienced considerable growth. At the …
Radio Vs. Streaming Services: Exploring How Radio Is Facing Competition, Kyra L. Allen
Radio Vs. Streaming Services: Exploring How Radio Is Facing Competition, Kyra L. Allen
Honors Undergraduate Theses
With the increasing number of online streaming services available in the world, it is astounding to note how radio is still around maintaining excellent ratings and listener interaction. It is essential to analyze the media industry, and while there are many outlets a person is capable of accessing music, people still turn to their local radio. The literature indicates how the business of radio still exists with the primary competition of today.
The study includes interviews from twelve radio professionals at Cox Media Group (CMG) Orlando, the home of seven different format radio stations. All interviewees hold a range of …
Using Children's Literature To Support Social And Emotional Learning In Third Through Sixth Grade Classrooms, Hayley L. Paljug
Using Children's Literature To Support Social And Emotional Learning In Third Through Sixth Grade Classrooms, Hayley L. Paljug
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This research examined the use of award-winning children’s literature for social and emotional learning, focusing on its use for children in third through sixth grades. The world is ever-changing, and, as a result, the need for children to learn necessary social and emotional skills continues to increase. These skills include, but are not limited to, perseverance, friendship, grit, caring, and the like. It has been found that teaching social and emotional skills through bibliotherapy is an engaging and successful method that can be used by schools and teachers. Teachers or other educational stakeholders can use this document to begin to …
Seeds Of Doubt, Amber Hilson
Seeds Of Doubt, Amber Hilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Seeds of Doubt is a two-dimensional (2D) animated film that explores how anxiety can stifle personal growth. The film demonstrates how accepting and coping with this anxiety can help you return to a place of calm and allow you to blossom. Roma, a young witch, struggles to use her magic to successfully make her crops grow. Her lack of confidence leaves her stuck inside the greenhouse until she is ready to move on to the tomato fields outside. She must first re-center herself and overcome her self-doubt before it consumes her completely. This idea is sourced largely from my own …
The Eyes And Ears Of The Nation: America's First Spy Ring, Eric Topolewski
The Eyes And Ears Of The Nation: America's First Spy Ring, Eric Topolewski
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the early and smaller espionage tactics during the American Revolution and compare them to the established Culper Ring. George Washington, the American general and later president, and Benjamin Tallmadge, the Director of Military Intelligence during the war, looked for a way to revolutionize espionage at the time. Prior to the Culper Ring, espionage was done on a small scale. Single spies were the most common form of espionage. Washington and Tallmadge knew they needed something new and worked to create something that would last and become sustainable. They were able to create …
Pestilence And Poverty: The Great Influenza Pandemic And Underdevelopment In The New South, 1918-1919, Andrew Kishuni
Pestilence And Poverty: The Great Influenza Pandemic And Underdevelopment In The New South, 1918-1919, Andrew Kishuni
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study examines the "Spanish" influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 in the U.S. South, using case-studies of Jacksonville, Savannah, New Orleans, and Nashville to sculpt a "Southern flu" more identical to the Global South and the developing world than the rest of the U.S. I examine poverty and political and economic paralysis in the years between the end of Reconstruction and 1918, and the poor results of political indifference on public health and disease control. I also analyze the social and institutional racism against persons of color that defined high infectious disease mortality in Southern cities.
I argue that Southerners faced …
Addressing The Elephant On The Stage: Mental Health In Theatre Education, Alexandra M. Meridionale
Addressing The Elephant On The Stage: Mental Health In Theatre Education, Alexandra M. Meridionale
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis examined the ways in which present-day 6th through 12th grade theatre educators approach the topic of mental health, both implicitly and explicitly, in theatre education. Through a survey of existing literature, as well as interviews with 6th through 12th grade theatre educators, the researcher examined ways in which theatre educators were aware of the mental health needs of their students in any of the following capacities: explicit discussions regarding mental health, theatre curriculum, show selection, script analysis, and casting choices.
The reveal the educator perception that mental health issues are increasingly relevant to 6 …
Representation In The Story: The Social Impact Of Diversity In Transmedia, Tiffany S. Tanaka-Cooper
Representation In The Story: The Social Impact Of Diversity In Transmedia, Tiffany S. Tanaka-Cooper
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to take a more profound and nuanced look into the effects of diversity in transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) on society, more specifically, how the representation in these stories affect the minority groups that interact with transmedia. This thesis investigates the depiction of minority groups in transmedia storytelling and the influence of identifiable characters and plotlines. The research and following interviews I have engaged in will encapsulate into a screenplay set in a fictional court that offers the discourse of "forced diversity" within the transmedia narrative: whether or not …
Australian And New Zealand Army Corps (Anzacs) In World War One: The Making Of National Identity And Erasure Of Women And People Of Color, Simran Pawar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
My work seeks to understand the origins of national identity as it pertains to the Anzacs of Australia and New Zealand, their service at the Battle of Gallipoli, and its use in the establishment of a white, male creation myth in both nations following the end of World War One. I furthermore plan to examine how this Anzac myth excluded and even erased the place of marginalized communities in the birth of Australia and New Zealand as modern nations. In other words, my thesis explores both the insiders and the outsiders of the Anzac myth. My cutting-edge research aims to …
Gender Disparity Of Women In Theatre Design, Madison M. Valesky
Gender Disparity Of Women In Theatre Design, Madison M. Valesky
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The question of why there is gender disparity in the field of theatre design continues to be an issue that has been widely debated in the field of theatre; scholars such as Tish Dace argue that workplace environments and family support are two of the main reason women leave the field of design. However, there are works, articles, arguments and perspectives that have not been adequately addressed regarding why the issue of why gender disparity in theatrical design still exists. My thesis addresses the issue of gender disparity in theatre design with special attention to the underlying issues that exists. …
A Pre-Structural Center: Deconstructing Classical Social Theory, Darius F. Irani
A Pre-Structural Center: Deconstructing Classical Social Theory, Darius F. Irani
Honors Undergraduate Theses
For theory and literature to evolve parallel to the subject matter which it associates, it recurrently progresses through admittance of variably incremental, yet critical, entries. This is the nature of modernism. This thesis reflects on one important point in the life of modernism, the advent at which society is first formalized and assimilated into theory: the origin of social theory, a point indisputably influential to twentieth century philosophy, but just eclipsed by one of that century's most noticeable theoretical features. The past century saw the rise and fall of a universalizing framework called structuralism. Informing the disciplines, especially the social …
La Mano E Il Braccio: Comparing Italian Immigrant Communities In Louisiana And Florida, 1880-1914, Keith Richards
La Mano E Il Braccio: Comparing Italian Immigrant Communities In Louisiana And Florida, 1880-1914, Keith Richards
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Italian immigration patterns to Louisiana and Tampa, FL have received a good deal of scholarly attention as two separate phenomena, but they are better understood as informing one another in the evolution of southern thought in regard to Italian immigrants. Italians were the second largest non-black minority group behind Mexicans to be lynched, and in understanding the circumstances surrounding those acts of extrajudicial violence, a pattern is apparent. Lynchings of Italians in Louisiana emerged out of fear of the Black Hand (La Mano Nera), and the Mafia, whereas the sole incident of an Italian being lynched in Tampa occurred as …
A Transnational Look At The Modern Women, Isabella Hardesty
A Transnational Look At The Modern Women, Isabella Hardesty
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Spanning forty years apart, the short story “Miss Sophia’s Diary” (1926) by Ding Ling and The Bell Jar (1963) by Sylvia Plath can speak to one another in revealing the position of women in a revolutionary new era. The two stories may be generationally and geographically distant, yet both hold a collective female consciousness in the context of the emerging modernist epoch. By examining these two pieces of literature in relation to one another, similar attitudes and stylistic trends emerge regarding the treatment of women. The common archetypes, for each respective time and country, imprinted onto women are at some …
This Woman's Work: Corrosive Power Structures, Gendered Labor And Weariness In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale And Oryx And Crake, Taylor J. Pryor
This Woman's Work: Corrosive Power Structures, Gendered Labor And Weariness In Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale And Oryx And Crake, Taylor J. Pryor
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In her 2007 essay “Slow Death (Sovereignty, Obesity, Lateral Agency),” Lauren Berlant asserts that “in the scene of slow death, a condition of being worn out by the activity of reproducing life, agency can be an activity of maintenance” (759). This concept emphasizes the difficulty of maintaining one’s agency while experiencing chronic exhaustion, or what can be referred to as the “wearied state.” Utilizing Berlant’s theoretical framework, this thesis investigates the concept of weariness in two dystopic texts: Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Oryx and Crake (2003). The respective protagonists of The Handmaid’s Tale and Oryx and Crake …
Visual Rhetorics And Rally Signs: A Study Of Feminist Theory And Progression, Rachel Casey
Visual Rhetorics And Rally Signs: A Study Of Feminist Theory And Progression, Rachel Casey
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This research explores the current directions of the U.S. Women's Movement and the beliefs encompassed by 21st century feminism through a study of participant rally signs displayed at the 2020 Women's March on Washington. Currently, there is much ambiguity surrounding the values for which feminism stands and further contestation about whether a U.S. Women's Movement exists at all. This study examines public feminist activism in an established social rally to extrapolate goals of the present women's agenda and underlying manifestations of feminist philosophy. Through analysis of personal messages and examination of feminist directions, further implications concerning rational dialogue and …
Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez
Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Macho Remixes: A Collection of Writings is a thesis containing short stories, poetry, and a personal essay that discuss the matter of toxic masculinity through the representations of male and macho sexuality in the Latinx culture. It covers depictions of how Latinx men have been stereotyped in today’s society. The works included here are my own perspectives of what masculinity means to me as a young multicultural male navigating life. Throughout these texts, I—my speakers and narrators—grapple with understanding the conflicting and oppressive expectations drawn from my roots, particularly those based in Latinx culture. The purpose is considering the negative …
Rethinking Causality: Thomas Aquinas' Argument From Motion & The Kalām Cosmological Argument, Derwin Sánchez Jr.
Rethinking Causality: Thomas Aquinas' Argument From Motion & The Kalām Cosmological Argument, Derwin Sánchez Jr.
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Ever since they were formulated in the Middle Ages, St. Thomas Aquinas' famous Five Ways to demonstrate the existence of God have been frequently debated. During this process there have been several misconceptions of what Aquinas actually meant, especially when discussing his cosmological arguments. While previous researchers have managed to tease out why Aquinas accepts some infinite regresses and rejects others, I attempt to add on to this by demonstrating the centrality of his metaphysics in his argument from motion. Aquinas cannot be properly understood or debated with a contemporary view of causality, but rather must wrestle with the concepts …
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Echoes: Digital Political Discourse And Vectors Of Ideological Propagation, Devon Razey
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Echoes: Digital Political Discourse And Vectors Of Ideological Propagation, Devon Razey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study analyzes the discursive strategies used by participants in online non-political spaces to negotiate and propagate political ideologies. Through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis in rhetorical studies (Huckin et. al.), this study produced a theory of political ideological vectors in digitally connective social network platforms. The analysis uses discussions taken from Twitter and Reddit surrounding the introduction of an Asian female character, Nagini, in the Fantastic Beats: Crimes of Grindelwald trailer immediately following its release in September 2018. Ultimately, this study found that participants are less likely to isolate themselves within politically congenial echo chambers than previously theorized …
Phantoms Of Fantasy: Materiality, Enjoyment, And The Minstrel Legacy Of Sentimentalism, Zafirios Daglaris
Phantoms Of Fantasy: Materiality, Enjoyment, And The Minstrel Legacy Of Sentimentalism, Zafirios Daglaris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This research utilized material culture concepts, Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, and literary analysis methodologies to investigate the rhetorical and experiential legacies of the antebellum 'complex of sentimental principles' within the twentieth century North American culture industry. Drawing on Eric Lott's concepts 'love and theft' and the 'black mirror,' the author analyzed culture industry products like songs and novels, and argued that the terms of sentimental identification among North American whites came to depend on associative processes precedented by blackface minstrelsy. Whereas minstrels had once constituted the stage-form by appealing to sentimentalism, eventually, in the years after American Civil War and the …
2030: Utilizing Animation In Political Messaging, Angela Hernandez-Carlson
2030: Utilizing Animation In Political Messaging, Angela Hernandez-Carlson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this paper and film is to explore the animated medium's ability to convey controversial political topics. The goal of this film is to reach my audience on an emotional level, which will hopefully motivate them to act on the information presented. By using animated themes and metaphors, the audience can digest the political messaging by disassociating themselves from the characters in the story. This will allow them to be open to other perspectives. This paper will explore how one can use the aesthetic quality of animation imagery to convey an important political message about our environment. The …
Some Southern Waters, Julian Baner
Some Southern Waters, Julian Baner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Some Southern Waters is a microbudget feature-length film written, directed, and produced by Julian Baner as part of the requirements for earning a Master of Fine Arts in Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema from the University of Central Florida. The film is a black and white, semi-abstract narrative mainly in the mystery genre, with elements of thriller, horror, and black comedy throughout. This thesis is a description of the creative impetus behind the project, as well as the technical process from pre-production through production, and post-production.
"You Tell Me How They Work": First-Year College Composition Instructors' Purposes And Practices For Choosing And Using Worked Examples, Rena Perez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis describes and analyzes the how and why behind first-year college composition (FYC) instructors' practices for choosing and using examples for teaching writing at UCF. In educational research, developments related to cognitive load theory, analogical transfer, and worked examples reject discovery learning pedagogy, instead advocating for providing examples to aid in problem-solving. Scholars in ill-structured disciplines have studied the use of worked examples (Kyun et al.; Ondrusek et al; Rourke and Sweller), paving the way for fields such as composition studies to apply this concept in new contexts. Although composition scholarship recommends the use of models or sample texts …
Mirrors For Monsters: A Journey Towards Self-Acknowledgement And Nuanced Representation In Film, Alejandro Watson
Mirrors For Monsters: A Journey Towards Self-Acknowledgement And Nuanced Representation In Film, Alejandro Watson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Mirrors for Monsters is a body of work created by Alejandro Watson in partial fulfillment of the requirements for earning a Master of Fine Arts in Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema from the University of Central Florida. The body of work consists of a feature length documentary, MHD, several installations (Self-Acknowledgement/Self-Acceptance, Garden of Bodies, Why Am I Like This?, Not My Thoughts), several short video pieces (In A Dream I Saw A Way to Survive and I Was Full of Joy, Car Ride (Baker Act Version), My Lunch With Andy, Prompts) and an art book, It's All Good. The body experiments with …
Mau Mau Blasters: The Homemade Guns Of The Mau Mau Uprising, James Stoddard
Mau Mau Blasters: The Homemade Guns Of The Mau Mau Uprising, James Stoddard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The Mau Mau Uprising was a violent anticolonial struggle that took place in Kenya between 1952 and 1960. During the Uprising, firearms were extremely difficult for Mau Mau fighters to obtain. The few precision weapons they could acquire came from raided government armories or those found on the battlefield. In order to make up the difference, the Mau Mau leadership turned to resources that were more readily available and relied on the ingenuity of their supporters. The result was a series of homemade firearms manufactured by Mau Mau fighters and sympathizers. This thesis argues that homemade guns were a unique …
The Troupes Coloniales: A Comparative Analysis Of African American And French Colonial Soldiers In The First World War, Matthew Patsis
The Troupes Coloniales: A Comparative Analysis Of African American And French Colonial Soldiers In The First World War, Matthew Patsis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis examines the service of African American soldiers during World War I in comparison with the service of French Colonial soldiers from Africa. This thesis argues that African Americans existed as colonial subjects of the American Empire and served as the colonial army of the United States just as soldiers from Africa did for France. The scope of this thesis covers ideologies of race in the United States and France, as well as racial policy and the implementation of racial hierarchy within the French and American armies during World War I. Through comparative analysis, this research reveals the relationship …
Deeper Impressions Of Thomas Nast And Joseph Keppler: Analyzing The Role Of Political Cartoons In The Development And Perceptions Of Late Nineteenth Century Group Images, Timothy Dorsch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This paper analyzes political cartoons from Thomas Nast and Joseph Keppler from the late 1860s through the mid-1880s. It argues that through use of effective symbolism and memorable illustrations, these cartoonists created and popularized caricatures of politicians, laborers, Irish Catholics, African Americans, and women that validated stereotypical views of the late nineteenth century and influenced later historical interpretations of the era. Analyzing the Nast and Keppler cartoons as significant historical resources rather than as interesting illustrations for historical monographs reveals the layers of literacy, social and political thought present in the drawings that the readers of the day would have …
Reading Between The Lines: Language Ideologies And Tutor Education Readings, Michele Cintron Toney
Reading Between The Lines: Language Ideologies And Tutor Education Readings, Michele Cintron Toney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Language difference and socially-just writing center praxis have long been points of discussion within writing center scholarship. Writing center administrators and tutors recognize that the praxis within their writing centers does not always correspond to their beliefs about working with student writers or the role of the writing center within the academy—particularly in the areas of language equality and social and racial justice—and they acknowledge the impact that course readings have in tutor education. While tutor education readings may not specifically state a particular ideological viewpoint regarding language difference, their discussions of language and rhetorical practices, multilingual writers, and tutoring …
Naming More Of What We Know: Critical Memoirs & The Ecological Metaphor As A Threshold Concept In Writing, Loren Cooper
Naming More Of What We Know: Critical Memoirs & The Ecological Metaphor As A Threshold Concept In Writing, Loren Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
"Naming More of What We Know: Critical Memoirs & the Ecological Metaphor as a Threshold Concept in Writing" contributes to the work begun by Adler-Kassner and Wardle to gather and name Writing Studies' body of disciplinary knowledge as "threshold concepts." This thesis answers their call to engage in the ongoing development of threshold concepts by offering an additional critical construct: Writing as ecological. To explicitly acknowledge that writing is ecological is an essential addition to the content of our knowledge because it (1) meets the threshold-concept criteria adapted from Meyer and Land (2003), (2) establishes a codified, embodied, 3-dimensional system …
