A Matron Of The Revolution, John H. Cross
A Matron Of The Revolution, John H. Cross
Florida Historical Quarterly
Probably few people in Florida are aware of the fact that in old Saint Michaels cemetery in Pensacola reposes all that is mortal of Mrs. Dorothy Walton, wife and widow of Governor George Walton of Georgia and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence from that State.
Princesse Achille Murat: A Biographical Sketch, Ellen Call Long
Princesse Achille Murat: A Biographical Sketch, Ellen Call Long
Florida Historical Quarterly
Cold in death is the heart so long attuned to suffering's call, friendship's genial mingling, and love's devotion. Ail that a prodigal nature gave in a noble, generous and gentle heart, with enchanting face and form, of almost perennial youth and loveliness, is lost to us, and how can we do without her in a world where such are so few? For more than forty years the subject of this sketch had lived in Florida, having removed to the Territory from the State of Virginia not very long after the "Exchange of Flags," which made it the property of the …

Florida Historical Quarterly
The prominence which has been given to St. Josephs bay of late owing to the tendency of the Western roads to find an outlet on the Gulf, so as to connect their lines with the Panama Canal, makes the history of this once famous place interesting to the readers who delve into the conditions of the past.

An Appeal For Legislative Aid, Florida Historical Society
An Appeal For Legislative Aid, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Below is, a copy of a bill which has been presented to the Legislature, requesting the State to make such provision as it may in its judgment see fit for the financial assistance of the Florida Historical Society. The bill is a literal copy of the one, offered at the last session of the Legislature, which passed the Senate but was left on the calendar of the House. The Society was organized to awaken interest in the preservation of historical data of the state in the absence of any official bureau or department and its active officers are doing all …
An Indian Bettlefield Near Melrose, H. Von Noszky
An Indian Bettlefield Near Melrose, H. Von Noszky
Florida Historical Quarterly
Although it is well known that the neighborhood of Melrose is rich in Indian mounds and a fine hunting ground for flint arrowheads, pottery; and the like, few are aware that within a few miles of Melrose was fought one of the most important battles on Florida soil. This struggle took place between DeSoto’s forces and the Indians under Vitachuco, some time in 1539.
Florida's "State Library", Florida Historical Society
Florida's "State Library", Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
The words are quoted, because, although in frequent use, they constitute a gross misnomer, the so-called "State Library" of Florida having always consisted of a great mass of printed books, pamphlets, maps, documents, etc., mixed and jumbled together in inextricable confusion, on shelves, on the floors, filed in dark corners and under stairways, in the damp basement of the State Capitol - a shame and a disgrace to the intelligence and public spirit of a civilized and long-suffering people.
Senator Yulee: A Biographical Sketch By C. Wichliffe Yulee, C. Wickliffe Yulee
Senator Yulee: A Biographical Sketch By C. Wichliffe Yulee, C. Wickliffe Yulee
Florida Historical Quarterly
The adage that: no man is a hero to his valet, may be coupled with one that: every man is a hero to his child; which fact the writer promises to bear ever in mind, endeavoring to anticipate the modifications of those candid friends whose friendship is never so demonstrative as when clipping one’s wings. But it is a matter of some regret that a person who feels compelled thus to issue a self-denying ordinance, should have been selected to write, for the Florida Historical Society, the biography of Senator Yulee; since any historical narrative must have a strong element …
Pensacola: Its Early History, S. J. Gonzalez
Pensacola: Its Early History, S. J. Gonzalez
Florida Historical Quarterly
Turning the hands of time backward along the dial of Floridian history, we find chronicled in the year 1559- or according to some writers 1553- the birth of an infant city on the shores of Ochees, a beautiful deep water bay, which offered safe anchorage to a fleet sailing northward under the command of one Tristam DeLuna, one of those adventurous Spaniards who, following the ignis fatuus of all Spanish explorers of the gulf - the fabulous golden stores of a country to the northward - had entered the harbor in search of a landing place.

In Memoriam: Francis Philip Fleming, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Among the most distinguished names of Floridians who have been honored with the position as chief magistrate of the state stands the name of Francis Philip Fleming. Notable and conspicuous as were his many public services unquestionably that of the establishment of a State Board of Health exceeded all others, since this service has proven of immeasurable benefit to the state and also to the country at large in preventing the introduction of epidemic diseases from other lands.

Jacksonville, Fifty-Three Years Ago, Otis L. Keene
Florida Historical Quarterly
A city of less than two thousand population, with quite broad and regular streets, and unlike those of to-day that tire lined and ornamented with electric lights, telegraph and telephone poles, that give them the appearance of an old cypress swamp, were then lined with the stately and beautiful water oak and magnolia; no electric cars, automobiles, bicycles or paving, consequently one could cross them through the deep, soft sand without being confronted with the dangers that the modern means of travel now impose on people. I found the little city quite a busy one in some lines of business, …

This article, although here printed for the first time, was written in 1897, five years before the destruction of St. Pierre on the island of Martinique, which was caused by a natural catastrophe similar to that by which Mr. Detwiler believes the phosphate beds were formed. --Editor

Origin Of The County Names In Florida, Geo. B. Utley
Origin Of The County Names In Florida, Geo. B. Utley
Florida Historical Quarterly
The following article indicates briefly the origin of the names given to the various counties of the State of Florida. So far as possible the reason for the name is given, as well as its origin. In instances where counties were named for men of national prominence there is often no apparent significance except the desire to honor the memory of a national hero.
