Spanish Interest In British Florida, And In The Progress Of The American Revolution, Mark F. Boyd Apr 2021

Spanish Interest In British Florida, And In The Progress Of The American Revolution, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

Despite the loss of Florida to Great Britain in 1763, colonial officials in Cuba, probably reflecting the attitude of the Spanish Court, maintained a lively interest in their erstwhile province and preserved a hope of its eventual recovery. When the mounting tension in the British colonies to the north progressed from civil disorder to the revolutionary struggle, Spanish interest in the conflict became intense as the cherished hope began to exhibit the possibility of attainment. The meagerness of the news which reached that Court through random channels was insufficient to reveal the trend of events or determine the moment for …

The Election Of 1876 In Florida, By Marcellus L. Stearns, Republican Candidate For Governor, Edward C. Williamson Apr 2021

The Election Of 1876 In Florida, By Marcellus L. Stearns, Republican Candidate For Governor, Edward C. Williamson

Florida Historical Quarterly

The only carpetbagger boss of a Negro county machine to become governor of Florida, Union Army veteran Marcellus L. Stearns, sought reelection as the Republican candidate in 1876. Born at Lovell, Maine, on April 29, 1839, Stearns at the outbreak of the Civil War was a student at Waterville College, Maine. He left there in 1861 in answer to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers. Losing an arm in the hard fighting in the Shenandoah Valley at the Battle of Winchester, he transferred to the Freedmen’s Bureau, and first came to Florida in 1866, being stationed as an official of the …

The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, Paul E. Fenlon Apr 2021

The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, Paul E. Fenlon

Florida Historical Quarterly

Though the factors responsible for the failure of Florida to experience the rapid economic development which took place in the vast western areas of the United States during the latter half of the nineteenth century are numerous and diverse, lack of adequate railroad transportation, certainly until the 1880’s, stands out as one of the most important.

Pensacola In 1810, Florida Historical Society Apr 2021

Pensacola In 1810, Florida Historical Society

Florida Historical Quarterly

In his research for a doctoral dissertation on “The Federal Government’s Factory System, 1796-1822,” Rev. Aloysius Plaisance, O.S.B. read numerous newspaper files of that period and came upon several descriptions of Pensacola in that era which he has sent us for publication. All are interesting and will be published here in time. Little is known, first-hand, of the Pensacola of 1810, so this account from the St. Louis Louisiana Gazette of September 27, 1910 is of much interest.

The South Florida Military Institute (Bartow), Samuel Proctor Apr 2021

The South Florida Military Institute (Bartow), Samuel Proctor

Florida Historical Quarterly

As was true of most of the institutions of higher learning taken over by the State at one time or another, the South Florida Military and Educational Institution had operated first as a private school. In 1894 Major General Evander McIver Law, a teacher of long and varied experience, and a Confederate veteran of distinguished service, founded a military school in Bartow, which eventually became one of the constituent parents of the University of Florida

The Marine Forces Of William Augustus Bowles And His State Of Muskogee, Lyle N. Mcalister Apr 2021

The Marine Forces Of William Augustus Bowles And His State Of Muskogee, Lyle N. Mcalister

Florida Historical Quarterly

Among the host of adventurers, dreamers, filibusters and trouble-makers who have added drama to the pages of Florida history, William Augustus Bowles yields to none. Among his enemies, and these were in the majority, he was referred to by epithets ranging from the relatively mild “that fellow Bowles” to the more emphatic “vagabond,” “desperado,” “Black Guard,” “Captain Liar,” and “desperate vile adventurer.” Among his friends and admirers he was known variously as “Beloved Warrior,” “Captain,” “General,” and “Director General.” In the pursuit of his designs Bowles dreamed great dreams, performed remarkable feats of derring-do, executed spectacular escapes, and by a …

A Scouting Expedition Along Lake Panasoffkee, Frank F. White Jr. Apr 2021

A Scouting Expedition Along Lake Panasoffkee, Frank F. White Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

By the early spring of 1842 the Second Seminole War was drawing to its close. Since the noteworthy engagement at Lake Okeechobee on December 25, 1837, when the Indians had been defeated and had fled into inaccessible hiding-places, few pitched battles had been fought. Consequently, for several years the troops had engaged in a series of scouting expeditions which were designed to ferret out the numerous small bands of Indians and capture them.

Florida Politics In 1881: A Letter Of Henry S. Sanford, Edward C. Williamson Apr 2021

Florida Politics In 1881: A Letter Of Henry S. Sanford, Edward C. Williamson

Florida Historical Quarterly

General Henry S. Sanford was a member of the group of Northern business men who during Reconstruction in Florida shrewdly saw economic opportunity in what was then a poor undeveloped frontier state. But entirely different from the carpetbaggers, Sanford came to Florida in 1870 a wealthy man. Purchasing a large former Spanish land grant of 25,000 acres in the central part of the state from General Joseph Finegan for $18,200, he founded the city of Sanford, began construction of a railroad southward and planted extensive orange groves.

Relations With The Indians In West Florida, 1770-1781, George C. Osborn Apr 2021

Relations With The Indians In West Florida, 1770-1781, George C. Osborn

Florida Historical Quarterly

As governor of the English Province of West Florida, Peter Chester had many vexing problems to tax his executive abilities and his diplomatic skill. None was more difficult nor more intriguing than that of dealing with the Indians. Even before his arrival in the colony the Indians must have begun to realize that, regardless of which European imperialistic rival eventually won out in the struggle for supremacy in southeastern North America, they were the losers. Friendship proffered by the Spanish, and by the English after 1763 when the Treaty of Paris gave Florida to them and still later by the …
