Those Who Strayed: Quaker Abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, And The Grimké Sisters Who Broke From The Society Of Friends To Actively Oppose Slavery In The Antebellum Era, David Mark Ledlow

All ETDs from UAB

The adoption of quietist theology by the Quaker community in the early nineteenth century created a divide between Quakers and their abolitionist movement due to the differing methods to achieve an end to slavery. Quaker society began to adopt a stance that avoided all controversies and employed conservative actions to combat slavery while abolitionist began to speak out more against the evils of slavery regardless of any controversy. This divided left Quaker abolitionist like John Greenleaf Whittier and the Grimké sisters with the choice to distance themselves from the Society of Friends or the abolitionist movement. Whittier and the Grimké …

The Unknown Turning Point: How Operation Pedestal Secured Allied Dominance In Europe, Brian Zachary Williamson Jan 2025

The Unknown Turning Point: How Operation Pedestal Secured Allied Dominance In Europe, Brian Zachary Williamson

All ETDs from UAB

Operation Pedestal was a World War II convoy operation in the Mediterranean that successfully resupplied the island of Malta in late 1942. The convoy fought through constant Axis air raids and submarine attacks, which resulted in high British losses. The operation was overshadowed by the Allied invasion of North Africa during Operation Torch, which was launched soon after. Malta’s role throughout the war in the Mediterranean made it vital for the British to hold and the Pedestal convoy’s successful effort to keep the island from capitulation should make the operation be considered as a turning point. The few military historians …

Origins Of An Evil God: Conceptualization Of The Demiurge Figure In Plato And Beyond, Brendyn David Matthews Jan 2025

Origins Of An Evil God: Conceptualization Of The Demiurge Figure In Plato And Beyond, Brendyn David Matthews

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis explores the creation of the Demiurge from Plato to the Gnostics. I investigate this early Christian group taking the idea of the Demiurge from Plato and twisting this figure into an evil, malevolent creator. This process involves the Gnostics taking several nodes of development: Plato’s initial conception and Hellenized Egyptians syncretizing Seth with YHWH and mixing them into their worldview to craft their Demiurge. I then answer why these Gnostics made such an entity, understanding that it was them not only trying to supersede Judaism, but the Proto Orthodoxy of Christianity at this time.
