People who use drugs are at a greater risk of being stigmatized than those who do not. Those who use drugs and parent children are at an even greater risk of stigmatization due to social expectations for parents to be accountable for their children. Therefore, it is acutely important that parents who use drugs form distinctions between themselves (i.e. good parents) and other drug using parents who are more deserving of social demonization. Previous research on drug users has demonstrated their attempts to distance themselves from other drug users using symbolic boundaries. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and with attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly exhibit difficulty with driving. Understanding the neuropsychological factors that contribute to driving difficulty can inform designing effective training programs for these groups. The overarching goal of the current project was to examine how core sociocognitive deficits of ASD and of ADHD (specifically executive functioning (EF) and theory of mind (ToM)) relate to driving behavior among licensed drivers. While several studies have shown that caregiving duties are correlated with poor mental health outcomes, little is known about this association and how it varies by the type of care provided, as well as the other types of social roles that the caregiver occupies. To study the \emph{parameter space of all polynomials of degree $d$} with connected Julia sets, Thurston proposed studying the space of all \emph{$\sigma_d$-invariant laminations}, where $\sigma_d:\mathbb S\to\mathbb S$ is the degree $d$ covering map of the unit circle defined by $\sigma_d(z)=z^d$. A lamination is a family of chords in the unit disk satisfying the following property. No two chords in a lamination intersect inside the disk. Chemical dispersants are fast becoming the most widely used tool in the remediation of spilled oil. The sheer magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill necessitated the use of multiple forms of remediation at scales never attempted. Synthetic nanovesicles, known as liposomes, are assembled from synthetic lipids as encapsulation devices for delivery of small molecules and are now a key component of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Due to their similarity to a cell membrane, liposomes also find use in anticancer treatment to reduce toxic side effects of chemotherapy. However, synthetic liposomes may require a multi-step synthesis, and very often show poor physical and chemical stability. In contrast, polymeric vesicles (polymersomes) assembled from synthetic polymers can boast much better mechanical and chemical stabilities and provide stimuli responsiveness that can enhance targeted drug delivery and provide drug release on-demand. The goal of this thesis is to study two broad disciplines: \emph{One Dimensional Dynamical Systems and Complex Dynamical Systems} in the spirit of \emph{``Developing efficient machinery to make conclusions about the dynamics of a given map $f$ from reduced information''}. In \emph{One Dimensional Dynamical Systems}, we accomplish the above stated goal by studying the \emph{forcing relation} among \emph{over-rotation numbers} of points on the interval. We began by discovering peculiar \emph{patterns} named \emph{very badly ordered patterns}, having no \emph{block structure} over an \emph{over-twist pattern}. Objective: To examine 1) adolescent communication comfort levels, 2) barriers to com-munication with systems of care (e.g., family, medical, school, athletic, friends), and 3) associations between communication comfort and demographic, injury characteristics, medical history, emotional well-being, and recovery outcomes following a concussion.Methods: Participants were 73 adolescents (mean age = 14 years old, 61.6% male, 67.1% White) recruited from sports medicine clinics. Communication comfort level ratings with individuals in each system of care were assessed with possible responses including: not at all, a little, somewhat, and very. We consider the discrete Schrödinger operator in $\ell^2(\Z)$ with periodic real valued potential $\mu V$ of period $p$ and $\mu>1$. Assuming that $\min\{|V(i)-V(j)|:1\le i < j\le p\}>0$ we show that the system admits a form of ballistic transport with Lieb-Robinson type bounds. In fact, we will show that the Lieb-Robinson velocity is small for large $\mu$, in fact it is proportional to $\frac{1}{\mu}$. We will also prove similar results for more general hopping operators under the same condition. In case $V$ is degenerate, i.e. there is a repeated value of $V$, we will prove weaker results for some special cases. We …

Novel psychoactive substances (NPS), also known as designer drugs or legal highs, have been gaining popularity since their emergence in the early 1980s. These manufactured drugs are based on the structure of already popularized drugs, with small structural changes creating new analogues of the drugs. Using data from the 2003 New Immigrant Survey, I examined the association between visa status and acculturation with physical, mental, and self-rated health among immigrants residing in the United States. The primary predictor variable in the study is immigrant visa status. The outcome variables of interest include physical health as any morbidity (chronic diseases), mental health as depressed (as defined by the DSM-IV) and self-rated health (poor self-rated health). Using logistic regressions, I found those with unfavorable visa statuses have worse mental, physical, self-rated health compared to the favorable visa holders. This thesis examines the intersection of Japonisme and modernity in Henri Rivière’s lithographic album, Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower (1902). While paying homage to Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Rivière represents thirty-six lithographs of modernized Paris. Rivière’s concept of modernity in the album goes beyond simply depicting the modern cityscape with the recently-built Eiffel Tower. Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2 is an intriguing system with unusual coexistence of superconductivity (TC≈23 K) and ferromagnetism (Tm≈20 K) and provides a unique platform to study of the nature of such coexistence. To establish a microscopic magnetic phase diagram of the recent doped 122-type ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe0.75Ru0.25)2As2, time-resolved synchrotron Mössbauer experiments in 151Eu have been performed on a single crystalline sample under hydrostatic pressure and low temperatures. Upon compression, the magnetic ordering temperature first increases sharply from 20 K at ambient pressure to 53 K at 10 GPa. With further compression, the magnetic ordering temperature decreases and the magnetic order is fully suppressed …

Locally advanced rectal cancer is treated with chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery. Most patients do not have a complete response to chemoradiotherapy, and the resistance mechanisms are poorly understood. We investigated the role of ST6GAL-1 in therapeutic resistance. ST6GAL-1 is a sialytransferase that adds the negatively charged sugar, sialic acid (Sia), to cell surface proteins in the Golgi altering their function. We hypothesized that ST6GAL-1 mediates resistance to chemoradiation in rectal cancer by inhibiting apoptosis. This thesis is a history of New Deal archaeology within the state of Alabama. It was designed to facilitate research with New Deal-era collections by providing a comprehensive contextual background. This thesis explores the relationship between the Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborers and the archaeological institutions of the period within the context of the Great Depression and the social democratic reforms of the New Deal. Labor, labor-time, and logistical information were gathered from the WPA Quarterly Progress Reports prepared by David L. DeJarnette from 1936 to 1942.
