The Mythic Circle

The Mythic Circle is a creative writing journal devoted to fantasy-inspired creative works; it has been published by the Mythopoeic Society since 1987, and earlier versions of the Society’s creative writing efforts extend to Mythril (1971 to 1980) and Mythellany (1981 to 1987). These journals have now been archived in their entirety at https://dc.swosu.edu/mythsoc/ through the efforts of the Society’s archivist, Phillip Fitzsimmons, and digital assistant Benjamin Dressler. All but the current issue may be downloaded for free, and the current issue may be purchased as a digital download or ordered as a print-on-demand title from Amazon.

The Mythic Circle

Welcome to The Mythic Circle #14. We hear raves from all quarters about the Tolkein Centennial in Ox- ford; sounds like a splendid time was had by all. Alas, we couldn't go, but we're enjoying the anecdotes!

The Mythic Circle

Welcome to Mythic Circle #13! The current Mythic Circle includes a lovely story by Joseph Kurtenbach called "The Healer and the Storyteller," a meditation, in effect, on how stories themselves may heal; a darkly attractive "Puppet Ruler," by Frank Mitchell; a return to our pages by C. Schabel with "The Cyclops Maid" (welcome back, Char les), and by Joe Christopher with three poems display ing his sheer prowess with words; and a "Mythopoeic Youth" section. We also have some fine free verse by Mary Choo. Please write in and give us your comments! This is especially important with regard to …

The Mythic Circle

Welcome to The Mythic Circle #12. We apologize for the lateness of this issue. Tina’s triplets (!), bom in March, slowed her down considerably over the past few months. They are now beginning to sleep at night, however, and she anticipates returning to a normal pace soon. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

The Mythic Circle

Welcome to The Mythic Circle #11. This issue offers some variations on a theme of Winter-into-Spring, particularly Doug Rossman’s notable "The Theft of the Sun"; let us know if you enjoy the seasonal parallelism. You’ll also notice that we continue to run a lot of poetry, including a series of poems by Dirk Verhulst which delicately probe the terror in everyday life, and a wryly lyrical series by Clelie Rich.

The Mythic Circle

Welcome to The Mythic Circle #10. We have a first in this issue: a pair of stories written by father and son. Dan Ryan, a Phoenix, Arizona, high school student, has written a re-telling of the Romeo & Juliet story entitled “The Chain." His father, Charles W. Ryan, provides us with a short story called “Janus Winked." You’ll also notice we’re running a lot of poetry in this issue, including a series of poems by Jill Solnicki that examine fairy tale heroines from an unusual angle.

The Mythic Circle

This issue was intended for September, 1989, but during that month my (Lynn’s) husband was hit by a truck while we were walking back to our car after a visit to the L.A. County Fair. A hit-and-run accident has a way of re-prioritizing your life.

The Mythic Circle

There are lots of things going on in this world and, in the scheme of things, The Mythic Circle is a very small piece indeed. Still, it consumes more of Ye Olde Edytors’ effort and energy than you might imagine. Just about the same time that I found myself wondering, "why are we doing this, anyway?" while we struggled with overloaded schedules and my temporarily bi-coastal lifestyle (back in Altadena now) -- I’d started talking to Christine about whether we should hang up the gloves and climb out of the ring before we’re punch-drunk- the Mythopoeic Society’s members questionnaire started …
