It presents a timeline of the formation and accession treaties, as well as a brief description of the EU's legislative and judicial bodies. The Forum against Sex Determination and Sex Preselection began its campaign in Mumbai against discriminatory abortions of female foetuses in April 1986. In the 25 years since then, laws have been enacted against the practice but female foeticide continues. It is a major challenge to fight the use of pre-selection techniques for sonpreference without jeopardising women’s right to safe abortion.

Normalmente, somos crítico do Presidencialismo. Mas o nosso sistema parlamentarista tem um problema também: o da qualidade dos nossos representantes. O texto ficcional proposto encena as angústias de um parlamentarista que entende a política como um clubismo, mas que mesmo assim precisa de ir digerindo as escolhas das máquinas partidárias para candidatos a deputados. Obviamente tal não pretende levar água nem ao moinho dos que pretendem reduzir o seu número, tornando o parlamento numa sensaboria bicolor, nem dos que gostariam de círculos uninominais, em que seria eleitos candidatos mediáticos ou caciques locais.

Discussion of the infamous "Christmas Controversy" – the legality of religious symbols in holiday displays on public land. This issue is examined both from the viewpoint of an attorney and a scholar of religion: From a legal point of view, the article examines the holdings of three major Supreme Court cases which have addressed this issue. From the viewpoint of religious scholarship, the article examined the relevant sociology of religion, which is also an important factor in accounting for why, in spite of settled precedents, this issue remains controversial.

This paper takes seriously the notion that individuals may bear responsibility for the transgressions of their group even where they do not bear the hallmarks of individual culpability. More specifically, I contend that citizenship itself can ground responsibility for the crimes of one’s nation-state, and I advance this contention in the context of a discussion about Americans’ responsibility for abuses committed in the course of the war in Iraq.

How should we judge psychopaths, both morally and in the criminal justice system? This Article will argue that psychopaths are generally not morally responsible for their bad acts simply because they cannot understand, and therefore be guided by, moral reasons.

Scholars and lawyers who endorse the same conclusion automatically tend to infer from this premise that psychopaths should not be held criminally punishable for their criminal acts. These scholars and lawyers are making this assumption (that just criminal punishment requires moral responsibility) on the basis of one of two deeper assumptions: that either criminal punishment directly requires moral responsibility or …

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The paper seeks articulate possibilities for a reciprocal ground of animality, a non hegemonic conceptual frontier within which the sovereign terrain of liberal humanism might yield to networks of alliances and reciprocities among human and other animals. The objective is to locate topographies where the conditions of creaturely life may be conceptualised in relational and non anthropocentric terms. It seeks to identify possibilities for a discourse of animality which avoids the haunting spectre of humanism.
