In this course, students make a brief cinematic piece inspired by movement exercises. Each session starts with a 45-minute movement exercise, guiding students to reflect on the nuances of emotions, memories, and ideas evoked during the activity. Taking notes at the exercise's conclusion, students transform these reflections into source material for their final projects. The course features technical demonstrations covering camera work, editing, and sound. The primary emphasis is on movement's pivotal role, serving as the anchor connecting these skills and molding creative concepts. Course Materials

This course is entitled video through because it aims to question how video allows us to think through time and through space simultaneously. In this course we will consider video as space, material, and matter. In an approach that prioritizes experimentation in space, we will work in a non-linear fashion: fabricating video in space and fabricating space with video _ a constant back and forth. From those experiments we will learn how to use the properties of video editing, video-making, shooting, projecting/screening as interconnected tools that deny a singular trajectory of making.

We begin with an analysis and critique of the concept of God, framing this concept within an understanding of Hegelian Spirit (Geist) and technological evolution. This thesis embodies discontinuities in performance art and its non-equivalent Chinese term “行 为艺术” between language and cultural context into a migrating journey. A comparative analysis on the disciplinary history of performance art studies in the US and China laid a foundation in exploring the dynamics of marginality in two contexts. Extracting from the narrative mechanism and body view of Chinese performance art, I demonstrate how the philosophy of living (生) inspired many artistic creation, which also echoes my research journey. “Little Old Wales”: Expressions Of Nationalism, Language And Pride In Welsh Football, Abigail Mathieson

Masters Theses

Welsh football, through its use of material culture, language, and acknowledgements of history, has become a major force in representing Welsh national identities locally and globally. This thesis expands on Benedict Anderson’s idea of the “imagined community” through contemporary research from academic sources and from voices throughout the Welsh footballing community. It highlights the significance of the sport in national identity, especially within smaller nations such as Wales with histories of post-colonialism. Along with this, football shows the role cultural nationalism plays in the nation of Wales and in its independence movements.
