Two Monsters In Search Of A Concept, Robert Yanal

What is a monster? At least three concepts have been proposed: Aristotle thinks a monster to be a "mistake of purpose" in nature; Noël Carroll thinks a monster to be a scientifically impossible being that arouses disgust and fear; Cynthia Freeland thinks a monster to be an evil being. Thus a two-headed calf is an Aristotelian monster; a werewolf a monster on Carroll's definition; and Norman Bates of Hitchcock's Psycho a monster on Freeland's concept. These have no interesting overlaps. My project is to discuss Norman Bates and Mark Lewis (of Michael Powell's Peeping Tom). Bates and Lewis are monsters, …

Exhibition Notes, Number 20, Fall 2002. The Written Word brings together pages from medieval manuscripts and early printed works, giving a sample of the various types of books created between 1100 and 1550. Individual pages were a popular way, especially in the earlier part of the 20th century, for museums and libraries to acquire representative collections, and many of The RISD Museum’s manuscript leaves were acquired as such a group in 1943.

Beginning in late February and continuing throughout the remainder of the semester, Wendy Ewald visited Michelle Silvia’s classroom of special–education students at the Carl G. Lauro Memorial Elementary School in Providence. The photographs and videos of the children learning to read and the patterns used in classroom lessons are the result of a three-way collaboration— teacher, students, and artist. This is a collection of 22 stories about abortion and menstrual extraction. There are stories from a woman having an abortion pre-Roe v Wade, and stories of people having multiple abortions in safe and legal methods. This zine was published in 2002 and was distributed across North America, mostly in zine and book stores, and in online zine catalogs. At the time, abortion was stigmatized- many people did not talk openly about their experiences for fear of being judged. At the time, although 1 in 3 women had an abortion in their lifetime, it was considered shameful by a majority …
