Illustration MFA Anthologies
What follows is a collection of twelve essays by the students of RISD’s Illustration Practice MFA programme, variously reflecting upon their thesis projects, or their creative practice more generally. It allows us an opportunity to chart the many themes and perspectives that inform their work—to notice moments of both overlap and divergence. This anthology not only offers us a window into their individual practices, but also provides a glimpse of the spirit and camaraderie that underscores their experience as a cohort. The very making of this anthology is a reflection of that collective spirit, and you will find many traces …

Evolving Design Critique For A Changing Industry, Sejin Hwang, Amy Ai, Leo Bang, Yuchen Chen, Kathryn Chen, Tiffany Chang, Stephen Jiang, Chloe Jo, Eileen Lee, Nicole Lu, Ray Liu, Kevin Wei, Elaine Zhang, Ellano Zhou
Student Work
This class serves as an exploratory practice in response to existing studies evaluating critique environments in the design industry. Previous studies identified three key limitations in the critique process: (1) a lack of experience for novice designers working with non-designers when reviewing their work, (2) an ineffective final review structure, and (3) a need for a more constructive and engaging feedback-sharing environment.1 To address these challenges, the course was designed to “critique” critique activities and develop strategic solutions to transform the way design work is reviewed, analyzed, and critiqued. The course was part of a pilot fall semester program called …

Towards The Non-Spectacle: Responses To Necropolitics In The Artwork Of Teresa Margolles And Maya Watanabe, Leslie Anne Condon
Towards The Non-Spectacle: Responses To Necropolitics In The Artwork Of Teresa Margolles And Maya Watanabe, Leslie Anne Condon
Masters Theses
How do we engage with artwork that addresses complicated histories
of colonialism and political violence, specifically intangible and
incomprehensible violence? Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ 2005 work, Lote
Bravo, is named after and composed of the soil from a mass grave site
discovered in 1995 in the southeastern corner of Ciudad Juárez, a city known
internationally for the femicide that has continued to haunt its streets and
peripheries since the 1990s. Peruvian filmmaker Maya Watanabe’s 2019 film
Liminal cinematically documents the official exhumation of two mass graves
in the Ayacucho and Huánuco regions of the Andes highlands, where
thousands of …

Entry for the 12th Baker & Whitehill Student Artists' Book Contest. Opening reception and award ceremony Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 6:30pm, Fleet Library, 1st Floor Main Reading Room. Juror: Gabrielle Reed. Counter-Dots is an interactive book that explores playfulness and tactility through the design of letters. Each letter and number is composed on a 21 × 21 grid of perforated holes that matches the same module of a spiral-binding puncher. The holes create a layering effect, allowing the letters to relate to one another. The book can be completely unbound from the spiral, allowing for an open-ended …

Performance Assemblages | Wintersession 2025 Syllabus, La Samuelson, Movement Lab
Course Materials & Research
In this course, we will make solo and collaborative performance works. We will approach performance as the project of creating new contexts for interrelation–between beings, material, matter, the known, and the unknown–that allow both the performer and the viewer to learn and/or experience something we otherwise would not have access to. In other words, the work of this class is the work of listening in the direction of something you can’t quite yet hear, and taking the time to figure out: where you might stand, what device you might invent, what you might wear, and how you might work with …
