Review Of "Teaching The Gothic," Edited By Anna Powell And Andrew Smith, Diane Hoeveler Nov 2007

Review Of "Teaching The Gothic," Edited By Anna Powell And Andrew Smith, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

In recent years there has been a considerable growth in scholarship on the Gothic and on supporting reference materials. There has also been a growth in single volume introductory guides to the form which have been crucial in supporting our pedagogic practices (at least in the early weeks of Gothic courses). However, this book, published as part of the MLA's Approaches to Teaching series, provides a much needed analysis of how we go about teaching the Gothic. The content is almost exhaustive and encompasses accounts of teaching the Gothic in fiction and in film and has chapters on a range …

Information Gap Activities: A Standards-Based Strategy For Promoting Oral Proficiency In A Thematic Context, Paul A. Garcia, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This article demonstrates how the sustained use of standards-driven information gap activities (IGAs) supports and enhances the development of speaking skills. In the first section, we define the IGA. We then discuss recent research showing how IGAs promote focused student-student interactions. In the third section we provide a blueprint for implementing the IGA in a standards-based thematic context. We conclude with content-based models from a thematic unit on Argentina that are appropriate for both secondary and post-secondary classrooms.

Navigating Conversational Turns: Grounding Difficult Discussions On Racism, Sarah Dees, Beth Godbee, Moira Ozias Oct 2007

Navigating Conversational Turns: Grounding Difficult Discussions On Racism, Sarah Dees, Beth Godbee, Moira Ozias

English Faculty Research and Publications

Antiracism is not only worth our time and attention, but also a process of internal and external transformation—of looking critically within the writing center at the same time as looking outward to campus and community. Critical reflection often begins during staff meetings, colloquia, and conferences; however, there can be setbacks in these dialogues. What we have observed in professional development with predominantly white writing center members is that conversations that start out as explicitly about racism often turn into conversations focused on language differences. This pattern of evasion worries us, as it detracts from efforts to identify and work against …

From Being To Givenness And Back: Some Remarks On The Meaning Of Transcendental Idealism In Kant And Husserl, Sebastian Luft Sep 2007

From Being To Givenness And Back: Some Remarks On The Meaning Of Transcendental Idealism In Kant And Husserl, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper takes a fresh look at a classical theme in philosophical scholarship, the meaning of transcendental idealism, by contrasting Kant’s and Husserl’s versions of it. I present Kant’s transcendental idealism as a theory distinguishing between the world as in-itself and as given to the experiencing human being. This reconstruction provides the backdrop for Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology as a brand of transcendental idealism expanding on Kant: through the phenomenological reduction Husserl universalizes Kant’s transcendental philosophy to an eidetic science of subjectivity. He thereby furnishes a new sense of transcendental philosophy, rephrases the quid iurisquestion, and provides a new conception of …

On Their Own Ground: Strategies Of Resistance For Sunni Muslim Women, Theresa Tobin Aug 2007

On Their Own Ground: Strategies Of Resistance For Sunni Muslim Women, Theresa Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Drawing from work in feminist moral philosophy, Tobin argues that the most common methodology used in practical ethics is a questionable methodology for addressing practical problems across diverse cultural contexts because the kind of impartiality it requires is neither feasible nor desirable. She then defends an alternative methodology for practical ethics in a global context and uses her proposed methodology to evaluate a problem that confronts many Sunni Muslim women around the world.

The Heir Of Righteousness And The King Of Righteousness: The Priestly Noachic Polemics In 2 Enoch And The Epistle To The Hebrews, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

It has previously been noted that 2 (Slavonic) Enoch, a Jewish pseudepigraphon written in the first century CE, contains traces of polemics against the priestly Noachic tradition. In the course of the polemics the role of Noah as the pioneer of animal sacrificial practice to whom God reveals the commandments about the blood becomes transferred to other characters of the story, including the miraculously born priest Melchizedek. In light of the polemics detected in 2 Enoch, it is possible that another work written at the same period of time, namely, the Epistle to the Hebrews—a text which like 2 Enoch …

Aesthetics Into The Twenty-First Century, Curtis Carter Jan 2007

Aesthetics Into The Twenty-First Century, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The new concerns facing aestheticians in the twenty-first century require serious attention if the discipline is to maintain continued viability as an intellectual discipline. Just as art changes as cultures develop, so must aesthetics. In support of this view is a personal account of evolving engagement with aesthetics and the factors that led to embracing change and a plurality of practices as essential to the health of aesthetic today. A brief examination of the state of aesthetics as it has evolved in the American Society for Aesthetics since its inception in the 1940s will follow. These two lines of development, …
