Soldier-Poet Or Écrivain-Combattant: How The French Trenches Of World War I Defined Witnessing, Nichole T. Gleisner
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper explores how the French trenches of WWI defined the act of witnessing. An examination of Third Republic grammar textbooks by Claude Augé shows how soldiers were predisposed to be receptive to trench newspapers' exhortations to become witnesses to the war experience. An analysis of these pedagogic reforms, paired with a close reading of trench newspapers, show why the broader term écrivain-combattant emerged in France, as opposed to soldier-poet in the British literary context.

A systematic examination of the ground on which French-language playwrights chose to stage their confrontation with the war would expose many of the literary and cultural biases on which our collective memory of the Great War is based. Even the brief outline of French-language war plays provided in this essay challenges many of our most cherished assumptions about war experience and the meaning of the Great War.

Inspired by the feminist demonstrations of the late 1970s in Barcelona, Maria-Antònia Oliver responded to the crime of rape by incorporating the slogan that appeared following these protests, contra violació, castració (against rape, castration) in “Fils trencats” (Broken Threads), written in 1984 and published in her 1989 collection Tríptics (‘Leaflets’), and in Estudi en lila (Study in Lilac,1985), the first installment of the Lònia Guiu detective fiction trilogy. Cuéntame cómo pasó 'Tell Me How It Happened,' Radio Televisión Española’s long-running television series, recreates Spain’s recent past from the late years of the Franco regime through the transition to democracy and beyond through the daily experiences of the fictional yet typical Alcántara family, thus functioning as a form of historical memory project. This critically-acclaimed program, which debuted in fall 2001, has attracted not only record-size audiences in its 18 seasons (to date), but also scholarly interest as well. The Littérature Mineure Of François Bon, Helena Chadderton

This article shows how the work of contemporary author François Bon can be read as an example of Deleuze and Guattari’s littérature mineure. Bon’s work stands out on the French literary scene for its capacity to be political in both its content and its use of form. Furthermore, Bon brings form and content together by demonstrating the impact of language and textual features on the perception of social division. Focussing on characteristic features of Bon’s style pertaining to genre, syntax and rhythm, I propose that the relationship between reality and text in Bon’s work is one of mutual effect and …

From the perspective of the author, “Behind the Stars,” takes a meditative look at ancient Inca astronomy and the culture surrounding both the sky and the idea of darkness. A research-based, creative nonfiction essay in which the author explores the history of an Andean rainforest, the people that used to inhabit it, and the constellations above it. Two types of constellations are discussed from a vantage point near the equator – both light-based constellations and the dark constellations specific to the Inca and Quechua cultures. Crossing Borders: A Multidisciplinary Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
A large number of studies have emerged in recent years regarding the social effects of local food systems. They have been shown to bolster local economies, increase general health, and even decrease crime rates. This study analyzes the effect of local food systems in the Taos Pueblo community, and how and why they create positive farming ideologies. A proposed covert effect may correlate to developments of positive ideologies towards native heritage, which would imply that local food systems can help to preserve indigenous language and culture.
