This collection consists of the professional and personal papers of Cornell-trained naturalist Dr. Francis Harper. Materials span 1904-1972 and include field notebooks, correspondence, photographs, and audiovisual materials documenting the plant and animal life as well as human ecology of the Okefenokee Swamp area of South Georgia. The photographs within Series 1 show the flora, fauna, and people of the Okefenokee swamp. The photographs were taken by the Harpers while on their trips to the swamp. Photographs are all in black and white and range in size. The Field Journals chronicle his travels in the okefenokee, Canada, and New England. Materials …

Records documenting desegregation processes at Armstrong State College from 1966 to 1982. Savannah State College, the historically African-American college of Savannah, is discussed in tandem with Armstrong The records and papers include correspondence, memorandums, official documents, newspapers, pamphlets, minutes, court documents, statistics and various versions of the desegregation plan. ASC and SSC of Savannah, Georgia are most prevalent but other University System of Georgia schools are mentioned as well. Influential people include Henry Ashmore, David Tatel, George Simpson and Peter Holmes.

The collection consists of the professional and personal papers of Georgia Southern Professor Emeritus, George H. Shriver. Box 9 consists of an accrual of additional papers from Wake Forest University, which has been kept separate from the original collection. This collection consists of materials created and collected by Mary Sue Deloach Smith as part of her 1999 dissertation, What did it mean to be a boarding teacher in a rural Bulloch County community in the 1930s and 1940s. Materials include In-depth interviews with fourteen people who worked as boarding teachers in Bulloch County, 1930-1940s, and transcription. Additional materials include three commissary account books for John H. Brannen farm, six miles west of Statesboro from 1929-1950s.

This collection consists of oral histories recorded by Eugenia Mills Fulcher from 1997-1998. The oral histories were used in Mills’ doctoral thesis, “Dreams Do Come True: How Rural One- and Two-Room Schools Influenced the Lives of African Americans in Burke County, Georgia, 1930- 1955,” defended in 1999 at Georgia Southern University. Materials include recordings on cassette tape and transcripts.

One of the most traumatic events in American history was the American Civil War. In 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and within six months, ten southern states, including Georgia and Virginia followed suit.1 These southern states fought against the northern states of the Union from April 12, 1861 until April 9, 1865. Finally, when the hostilities were concluded, the southern states rejoined the union. Unfortunately, in some ways, the hostilities never really subsided and remained in the minds of many Southerners.
