In Fairyland Or Thereabout: The Fairies As Nationalist Symbol In Irish Literature By And After William Allingham, Cassandra M. Schell
In Fairyland Or Thereabout: The Fairies As Nationalist Symbol In Irish Literature By And After William Allingham, Cassandra M. Schell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This essay is a look at a little known Irish poet, William Allingham, who invokes the fairy as a vehicle for a political change in Ireland. It offers a close reading of a few of his poems as well as historically approaches the use of fairies in the popular culture of the nineteenth century. In Chapter I, I use an historical approach to discuss the biography of William Allingham and his place in Irish literature as a poet we have neglected. I also discuss a cultural study of the portrayal and use of the fairy in the nineteenth century. This …

Military Children And Holistic Education: A Narrative Reflection On Classroom Practice, Edith Allison
Military Children And Holistic Education: A Narrative Reflection On Classroom Practice, Edith Allison
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation uses autobiographical narrative inquiry as a source of knowledge-generating reflection to examine how the educational needs of military children might be met through the use of holistic educational practices rather than a (well-intentioned) traditional, standardized curriculum. Data were gathered through observation; personal experience as a military child, military member, mother of military children and teacher of military children; journal entries and vicarious experiences shared by students, parents, educators and other invested in this population of learners. Experiences were compiled into fictional composites to protect the identity of all parties as well as national security. These composites were then …

Cultural Power And Utopianism In Laurie Halse Anderson's Prom And M.T. Anderson's Feed, Leah Dinatale
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Author's abstract: Resourcefully and responsibly obtaining a sense of power is central to quality young adult literature. Laurie Halse Anderson's Prom and M.T. Anderson's Feed show their adolescent protagonists' struggles with identity formation, consumerism, and the adult world. In order to address power relationships, the two novels address the rise of a global electronic and print media system that collapses traditional notions of time and space and the excessive consumption associated with the culture such a system creates. However, these two novels explore postmodern consumer culture from different perspectives. Prom functions as a utopian, revisionist fairy tale in which the …

When Repetition Isn’T The Best Practice Strategy: Examining Differing Levels Of Contextual Interference During Practice, Laura Stambaugh
School of Music: Faculty Publications
Two experiments examined the effects of blocked and random practice schedules on the performance accuracy, speed, and temporal evenness of performance by wind players. Blocked schedules used repetitive practice orders, while random schedules constantly changed the order of tasks practiced. Beginning clarinet students completed three days of practice on three short technical tasks, in either a blocked or random order. Twenty-four hours after practice, beginning students who had practiced in the random order were able to play significantly faster than students who had practiced in the blocked order (F1,38=24.95, p
