Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

This paper seeks to survey some of the political forces which clashed in the late 1970s as the U.S. Department of Education was created. It also seeks to posit that President Jimmy Carter’s personal views about schooling in America had more to do with his tireless fight to establish the new department than previous scholars have indicated. Several previous papers on this subject emphasized Carter’s political debt to the National Education Association and that union’s demands that a separate department be created but none focus on Carter’s personal attachment to the ideals of education in a democratic society.

This paper aims to examine the treatment American prisoners of war experienced at the hands of their German captors during World War II. Ben Phelper, a US Airman who was taken captive by the Germans from 1943-1945, wrote a diary detailing his daily life while living in the stalags. This research uses Phelper’s diary to understand what life was like for Americans in German POW camps and compares Phelper’s experience to existing literature on how Germans treated their American POWs. The Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654, concluded between the Cossack Hetmanate and the Grand Duchy of Muscovy at the Pereiaslav Rada, marked the beginning of modern Cossack-Muscovite (in perspective, Ukrainian-Russian) relations. Owing to its central role in shaping both Russian and Ukrainian national narratives, the agreement remains a highly contentious event in Eastern European history. Historians from the Russian and Ukrainian historiographical traditions offer divergent interpretations of how the agreement was conceived and received by the Cossacks and Muscovites. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, this essay critically examines these competing narratives and concludes that Ukrainian historiography—emphasizing …

Since its inception in seventh-century Arabia, Islamic thought and the concept of jihad have been present among Islamic scholars. Nevertheless, despite a history of conflict with Western nations through religious wars in the Near and Middle East, the rapid transformation of Islamic extremism by means of global terrorism in the late twentieth- and early twenty-first century ultimately traces to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the rise of the Mujahideen. Through a comparative analysis of Law and Identity in Mandate Palestine by Assaf Likhovski, and A Legal History of Rome by George Mousourakis, this essay demonstrates that law was crucial to the expansion of empire. When read in tandem, these monographs provide a transhistorical framework for viewing law outside of itself, as a mechanism of colonial and imperial domination.

“A Tale of Two Eras” explores the Gretsch Jet Firebird electric guitar over the years with one example from 1956 under family leadership, and another from 1971 during the Baldwin era. Though both instruments share a bold red finish, their design and sound reflect shifting company visions and rock history. Used by artists like Malcolm Young, the 6131 Jet Firebird has helped shape the look and tone of rock music.

Holocaust Memorialization & Memory: Serbia’S Strange Remembrance Of The Shoah At Sajmište, Henry Gilson

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The changing landscape of Shoah memory in Serbia has largely gone unexamined. Using the Staro Sajmište concentration camp site and its in situ memorial as a focal point, this paper examines how Holocaust remembrance in Serbia has shifted across historical periods, often marked by erasure, marginalization, and historical revisionism. Official narratives frequently redirected attention away from the Jewish victims murdered at Staro Sajmište toward emphasizing Serbian suffering, particularly at the Ustaše-operated Jasenovac camp. Political pressures and the strategic use and placement of commemorative plaques facilitated this narrative shift. While much of the existing scholarship on the 1980 Moscow Olympics focuses on Jimmy Carter’s infamous boycott, a closer examination from the Soviet perspective reveals a distinctive moment in Cold War history. Set against escalating global tensions following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Kremlin capitalized on the Games to project strength, unity, and international legitimacy. Although the Western boycott affected the Games, it created an opportunity for the USSR to showcase socialist athletic excellence and strengthen diplomatic ties with Non-Aligned nations, many of which resisted U.S. pressure to abstain. The Games were transformed into a carefully orchestrated ideological spectacle. …

Finding Aids

The collection dates from 1938 to 2001 and consists of meeting minutes, administrative records, photographs, and newspaper clippings documenting the activities of the Herty Foundation, its laboratory, and pilot plant. Photographs include views of the early pilot plant, laboratory, and shipyard around 1938 and the opening of the new pilot plant in 1957. Newspaper clippings report on the Herty Foundation and its work between 1953 and 1980.
