The problem under consideration was an investigation of the doctrine of soteriology set forth by conservative evangelical theologians in the light of the New Testament usage of the term "heart" (kardia). The term "heart" (kardia) is a prominent word in the New Testament, especially in the areas referring specifically to sin and salvation from sin. Any doctrine of salvation from sin will, therefore, be greatly influenced and affected by the interpretation placed upon the New Testament writers' meaning of this word. Evangelicals have always regarded the Bible as the ultimate source of doctrine as well as morale. This attitude applies, of course, to its teaching on the Atonement of Christ. This scriptural teaching on this subject is described by a number of definitive terms, the meaning of which is crucial to the formulation of a biblical doctrine of the Atonement. These terms, however, have never been studied in a comprehensive manner, and in no case has evidence been presented to show their meaning in relation to each other.

Belief in an intermediate state has never been wholly absent from religious thought. One purpose of this investigation has been to examine data concerning an intermediate state, and what its nature is. The writer, after limited study in the field of Christian education, was impressed by the agreement between religious and secular educators alike that a vitality relationship existed between educational philosophy and educational methods. The course Principles of Teaching brought attention to the fact that each religious group had basic beliefs which constituted its theology; each group developed an educational philosophy in order to propagate its basic beliefs; each group employed educational methods to communicate the educational philosophy; and, the methods used affected the final outcome.
