Fragment I of the seventh-century Spartan poet Alcman, better known as the Louvre Partheneion, remains one of the most vexing specimens of Greek lyric. Scholars have debated with great vigor about the meaning of various elements in the poem: the Tyndaridae legend, H6poV (line 14), oV (line 61), the light imagery, the horse imagery, the Pleiades (line 60), the "Ten" and the "Eleven" (lines 98-99), and so on. Although definitive interpretations are elusive, I believe that one viable solution to the meaning of these elements and their function in the poem is at hand through a hitherto unexplored avenue of …

Children’s Literature of the Harlem Renaissance is a timely addition to schol-arship on both African American literature and children’s literatureof the early twentieth century. The scope of Katharine Capshaw Smith’swork makes it a particularly welcome follow-up to DonnaRaeMacCann’s award-winning White Supremacy in Children’s Literature(Routledge 1998), which focused on the relationship of African Ameri-can children to mainstream children’s literature from 1830 to 1900.Dr. Smith moves us to the next stage, focusing on the emergence ofan African American children’s literature in the first half of the twen-tieth century. Diana Garner was a student at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana when she began to write to soldiers stationed in Vietnam during 1968-1969. A friend encouraged her to place her name in the Sea Tiger, a magazine published by the military. Diana began receiving letters from the soldiers shortly after placing her address in the magazine. She continued to write to a few of the soldiers for some time but eventually lost contact with all of her soldier pen-pals. The letters mostly focus on the mundane activities in the life of a soldier but occasionally glimpses of the fear …

Emma Chenault Kelly is a distinguished woman. She graduated from Eastern Illinois State Teachers High School in 1923 and continued her education at Eastern earning a two-year teaching certificate. She then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky, a master's degree form Columbia University and a doctorate in education from New York University. In the 1940s, she joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC), and, by 1992, she published a book containing her letters and newspaper articles from WWII.

The Fool is a detective story written in the vein of the crime fiction of the thirties, forties, and fifties. It is a work that simultaneously pays homage to its influences while giving a postmodern update to the genre conventions in an attempt to bring validity to an all-too-often disregarded form of fiction. The story has been written in a minimalist style so that the reader might engage the story on a much more primal level than traditional genre fiction.

This thesis situates South African writer Zoë Wicomb's fictional work within a critical context of current feminist theory, exploring Wicomb's response to a central problem for poststructuralist feminism-how can we deconstruct femininity while simultaneously conserving a platform for feminist political activism; how can we assert. on the one hand, that there are no "women", and then, on the other, continue to campaign on behalf of "women's" rights? Adolescence can be a difficult time in life, and today's teenagers face even more difficult situations in the high school atmosphere. A frequent element in the high school social scene is alienation of the "uncool" kids. This social isolation can have devastating effects on the outcasts and school community as a whole. Within this thesis, I reveal my plan for alleviating the emotional trauma of social isolation by bringing the discussion of social outcasts into the literature classroom. Because standardized testing is the means by which most student skills are assessed, it is important to ensure that such tests are accurately portraying student abilities. In the case of standardized writing tests it has become apparent that such tests are both unreliable and invalid and the tests, are, therefore, not doing what they are intended to do. Standardized writing tests do not create typical representations of student writing and in most cases only lead to the creation of formulaic writing-the five-paragraph essay. In their work and in their lives, Don DeLillo and Jim Morrison have been fascinated by the dialectic between famous figures and those whose adoration makes them famous. Each writer has written extensively about (and lived with) the conflict between a famous figure's individuality and the expectations of his fans. DeLillo depicts tensions between famous figures and admiring crowds in several ofhis novels, especially in his most thorough analyses ofthe subject, Great Jones Street, a portrait of a suddenly reclusive rock star, and Mao II, where he depicts a legendarily reclusive novelist. A good poet to illustrate the distinction between modernism and postmodernism would be George Oppen (1908-1986). I believe Oppen's "objectivism" - coupled with a judicious use of deliberate ambiguity - nicely gets us past the postmodern insistence on the illusions of selfhood, reason, and order by insisting on the centrality of the perceiver/thinker amid the objective chaos of perceptions/ideas, while at the same time recognizing the multi-vocal construction of the perceiver/thinker. The focus of this study is to demonstrate that the language used to write the texts for sacred music of the Methodist Church including psalms, hymns, camp meeting songs, Negro spirituals, and gospel music has been adapted throughout history to meet the changing spiritual needs of society.

This thesis reveals details about the lyrics of sacred songs from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries that are pertinent to historic and modern Methodist music. This project pinpoints specific rudimentary concepts of the Thai Theravadan Buddhist philosophy, as they surface in the short stories of SriDaoRu’ang. Through these short stories, many of the ritualistic practices of this particular Buddhist philosophy are exemplified, presenting a dire need for the reformation of the rituals which tend to genderize and politicize the spiritual realm. This suggestion for the reformation of such practices and beliefs attempts to persuade the Theravadan world against polarized gender-specific practices that merely accentuate the differences between members of the Buddhist world, and act as a socio-political barrier for women and the poor. Paul Scott's The Raj Quartet consists of four novels dealing with the waning of British imperial control of India: The Jewel in the Crown (1966), The Day of the Scorpion (1968), The Towers of Silence (1972), and A Division of the Spoils (1976). This thesis analyzes the Quartet as historical fiction, defined according to the criteria laid out by Georg Lukacs in The Historical Novel (1937). The characters that populate Scott's Quartet live in an age of historical transition: they are shaped by reverberations from World War II as well as the more immediate struggle for Indian independence. Polish-expatriate film director Roman Polanski's career has been largely overshadowed by the bizarre and tragic events of his personal life. After a horrific childhood that saw him watch helplessly as his Jewish parents were taken away by the Nazis to the concentration camps, Polanski again experienced familial tragedy when his eight-month pregnant wife Sharon Tate and four houseguests were brutally murdered in 1969 by members of the Charles Manson cult. In the aftermath of the Manson murders, the director was further victimized by the American popular press, which, according to biographer Barbara Leaming, unfairly suggested that he unwittingly "brought the …
