When Predator Becomes Prey: The Gendered Jargon Of Popular Culture, Melissa R. Ames Jan 2011

When Predator Becomes Prey: The Gendered Jargon Of Popular Culture, Melissa R. Ames

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Throughout the first decade of the twenty-first century the vernacular of popular culture has been bombarded by sexualized terminology. Although these terms are often formed with humorous intent, their staying power and use as cultural descriptive categories is both intriguing and disturbing. Also troubling is the fact that the majority of these new terms, such as puma (a thirty-something female “dating” a younger male), cougar (a forty-plus female “dating” a younger male), and MILF (“mother I’d like to fuck”), are restricted to the female gender alone. Literary Studies with Creative Writing Emphasis

Traditionally, the term deux ex machina refers to the intrusion of a God-like being into the events of a play: in order to bring about a desired conclusion, the playwright introduces a supernatural deity who restores order. Witness the statue of Hermione at the end of A Winter's Tale.

More modem texts call for a broader interpretation. The symbolic rain of frogs at the end of Paul Thomas Anderson's film Magnolia, or the disappearance of Charles Lindbergh in Philip Roth's The Plot Against America, qualify as dei ex machina. These are events created not …

Westfield College: Fighting For The Soul, Ryan M. D'Arcy Jan 2011

Westfield College: Fighting For The Soul, Ryan M. D'Arcy

Masters Theses

The Church of the United Brethren in Christ developed quickly in the United States in the nineteenth century. The denomination, against strong opposition at first, became a great supporter of church-sponsored schools. Westfield College was the school the denomination founded in Illinois. It, like the denomination's other schools, reflected the beliefs held by the denomination. It generally allowed individual interpretation regarding the applications of biblical teaching, particularly regarding baptism. The schools, however, held their students and faculty to a tight moral code and tried to act upon that code in the community by banning alcohol sales, supporting women's rights, and …
